8.2 Earthquake hits Tarapaca, Chile.
A powerful magnitude-8.2 earthquake struck off the coast of northern Chile on Tuesday night, setting off a small tsunami that forced evacuations along the country's entire Pacific coast. Six people were killed and a tsunami advisory remains in effect for Hawaii as the effects of the temblor move out over the Pacific Ocean, but the state isn't likely to see damage from the higher waves.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a tsunami alert for the South American East Coast. Subsequently, The Tsunami Warning Centre cancelled tsunami watches for areas other than northern Chile and southern Peru.
The quake was very shallow, only 10km below the seabed. There are reports of 2m (6ft) waves striking some of the Chilean coastline. Chilean authorities have ordered the speedy evacuation of coastal areas. There are some reports of landslides hitting highways and Chilean TV has broadcast pictures of traffic jams as hundreds of thousands of people evacuate coastal areas.
More than 20 significant aftershocks followed, including a 6.2 tremor. More aftershocks and even a larger quake could not be ruled out said a seismologist.
