In the Eastern Pacific Ocean: Hurricane 06e (Felicia), located approximately 1067 nm south of San Diego, is tracking westward at 08 knots.

In the Northwest Pacific Ocean: Tropical depression 09w (Nine), located approximately 659 nm southeast of Kadena AFB, is tracked northwestward at 01 knot.

Turkey – Heavy rain on 14 July 2021 triggered flash floods and landslides in the Province of Rize in the Black Sea Region of northern Turkey. As of 15 July authorities in the province reported 6 people had died and 2 were missing. The districts of Muradiye, Güneysu and Çayeli were all badly affected. Houses collapsed or were buried under landslides and flood debris. Over 70 roads in the area have been closed.

Belgium – At least 14 people have died and 4 are missing following catastrophic flooding in Belgium that struck after torrential rain on 14 July 2021. The worst affected areas are in Liège Province and also the provinces of Namur and Luxembourg. The Vesdre, Ourthe, Amblève and Meuse rivers were experiencing historical floods.

Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan – Floods and mudslides caused by heavy rains swept away houses in two villages in the Aksy district in Jalal-Abad Region of western Kyrgyzstan on 12 July, 2021, close tho the border with Uzbekistan. At least 15 people across the two countries have died as a result. A state of emergency has been declared in Jany-Jol and Ak-Jol rural districts of Aksy region of Jalal-Abad oblast.

The Amazon rainforest – Carbon Sink to Carbon Factory

Forests absorb huge amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) from Earth’s atmosphere, making them a key part of mitigating climate change. But humans may have already rendered the world’s largest rainforest useless in — and perhaps even detrimental to — the battle against greenhouse gases, a new study finds.

According to the study, published July 14 in the journal Nature, the Amazon rainforest is now emitting more than 1.1 billion tons (1 billion metric tons) of CO2, a greenhouse gas, a year, meaning the forest is officially releasing more carbon into the atmosphere than it is removing.

The carbon balance tipped due to “large-scale human disturbances” in the Amazon ecosystem, the researchers wrote in their study, with wildfires — many deliberately set to clear land for agriculture and industry — responsible for most of the CO2 emissions from the region. These fires also reinforce a feedback loop of warming, the team found, with more greenhouse gases contributing to longer, hotter dry seasons in the Amazon, which lead to more fires and more CO2 pollution.

More Heat Victims

Wildlife experts are expressing concern over recent avian behavioral changes and the deaths of birds due to excessive heat.

The international organization Hot Birds Research Project says that in Australia, the southern U.S. and Africa’s Kalahari Desert, the mounting episodes of excessive heat are having profound effects on birds.

Record heat in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal state last November saw scores of birds fall dead, the country’s first reported bird fatalities from heat.

Ornithologist Susan Cunningham of the Hot Birds Research Project says, “Some bird species are spending more time trying to stay cool as they deal with increased numbers of hot days. Birds are forced to shelter in the shade when they should be foraging.”

The week’s hottest temperature was 130 degrees Fahrenheit (54.4 degrees Celsius) in Death Valley, California.

The week’s coldest temperature was minus 98.0 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 72.2 degrees Celsius) at Vostok, Antarctica.

Temperatures were tabulated from the more than 10,000 worldwide synoptic weather stations. The United Nations World Meteorological Organization sets the standards for weather observations, and provides a global telecommunications circuit for data distribution.

Wildfires

Wildfires – Oregon/California, USA

The Bootleg Fire, the largest wildfire currently burning in the U.S., has now torched more than 150 000 acres and has stymied firefighters with erratic winds and extremely dangerous fire behavior. Some of the evacuations were triggered by a second, smaller fire called the Log Fire to the northeast of the main blaze that expanded to nearly 5,000 acres (2,023 hectares) in the past 24 hours. The main fire has destroyed 21 homes in an area north of the Oregon-California border that’s been gripped by extreme drought. It was 7% contained as of Thursday.

The Dixie Fire was tiny when it began on Tuesday, but by Thursday morning it had burned 3.5 square miles (9 square kilometers) of brush and timber near the Feather River Canyon area of Butte County northeast of Paradise. It also moved into national forest land in neighboring Plumas County.

Aira – Kyushu (Japan) : JMA reported that very small eruptive events were occasionally recorded at Minamidake Crater (at Aira Caldera’s Sakurajima volcano). Crater incandescence was visible at night during 9-12 July. The Alert Level remained at 3 (on a 5-level scale), and residents were warned to stay 2 km away from the crater.

Dukono – Halmahera (Indonesia) : Based on satellite and wind model data, the Darwin VAAC reported that during 8 and 11-13 July ash plumes from Dukono rose to 2.1 km (7,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted N, NW, W, and SW. The Alert Level remained at 2 (on a scale of 1-4), and the public was warned to remain outside of the 2-km exclusion zone.

Ebeko – Paramushir Island (Russia) : According to volcanologists in Severo-Kurilsk (Paramushir Island), about 7 km E of Ebeko, explosions during 2, 4, and 6-8 July produced ash plumes that rose as high as 3 km (10,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted E and SE. A thermal anomaly was identified in satellite images during 5-7 July. The Aviation colour Code remained at Orange (the second highest level on a four-colour scale).

Etna – Sicily (Italy) : INGV reported continuing Strombolian activity and two episodes of lava fountaining Etna’s Southeast Crater (SEC) during 5-11 July. The first episode began at 1130 on 6 July with Strombolian activity at SEC. The intensity and frequency of explosions progressively intensified and formed lava fountains. Ash plumes rose to 1.5 km (5,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted S, causing ashfall in areas downwind. A small lava flow originated from the S side of the cone and traveled SW, stopping at 2,800 m elevation. During fieldwork on 7 July scientist observed deposits of bombs, 1 m in diameter, on the N flank and smaller bombs scattered farther away. A second episode began at 2100 on 8 July with Strombolian activity which again intensified and formed lava fountains. Ash plumes rose to 3.4 km (11,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted SE, causing ashfall in downwind areas. Lava flowed SW to 2,350 m elevation.

Karymsky – Eastern Kamchatka (Russia) : KVERT reported that a thermal anomaly over Karymsky was idenitifed in satellite images during 5-8 July and ash plumes were visible drifting 60 km W and E during 6-8 July. The Aviation colour Code remained at Orange (the second highest level on a four-colour scale).

Krysuvik-Trolladyngja – Iceland : The fissure eruption in the W part of the Krýsuvík-Trölladyngja volcanic system, close to Fagradalsfjall on the Reykjanes Peninsula, continued during 7-13 July. Lava fountaining and overflows from the fifth vent were sometimes visible, and lava from the crater flowed in tubes as well as on the surface. Visible activity at the vent occasionally paused for various lengths of time, though sub-surface lava likely continued flowing through the tube system. Weather conditions prevented views of the crater on some days and also created hazardous conditions. The Aviation colour Code remained at Orange due to the lack of ash and tephra emissions, though IMO warned of the potential for lapilli and scoria fallout within a 650 m radius of the active vent. Authorities warned of increased gas emissions hazards.

Lewotolok – Lembata Island (Indonesia) : PVMBG reported that daily white-and-gray plumes from Lewotolok rose as high as 1.1 km and drifted SW, W, and NW during 6-12 July. Incandescent material was ejected from the summit vent on 6, 8, and 10 July; on 6 July material landed as far as 300 m away. The Darwin VAAC noted that on 7 July an ash plume rose 2.7 km (9,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted E, based on satellite data and information from PVMBG. The Alert Level remained at 3 (on a scale of 1-4) and the public was warned to stay 3 km away from the summit crater.

Merapi – Central Java (Indonesia) : BPPTKG reported that the lava dome just below Merapi’s SW rim and the lava dome in the summit crater both remained active during 2-8 July. The SW rim lava-dome volume was an estimated 1.815 million cubic meters by 8 July and continued to shed material down the flank. The volume of the summit lava dome was 2,741 million cubic meters. A total of 17 pyroclastic flows traveled a maximum of 2 km down the SW flank and as far as 1.5 km SE. As many as 125 incandescent avalanches traveled a maximum of 2 km down the SW flank and 1.8 km down the SE flank. The Alert Level remained at 3 (on a scale of 1-4), and the public was warned to stay 5 km away from the summit.

Nevados de Chillan – Chile : SERNAGEOMIN reported continuing explosive and effusive activity at Nevados de Chillán’s Nicanor Crater during 16-30 June, alomg with increased sulfur dioxide emissions and thermal anomalies. Explosions generated ash plumes that rose as high as 1.4 km above the crater rim and crater incandescence at night; incandescent material was ejected as far as 500 m onto the N, E, and S flanks. The L5 and L6 lava flows continued to be active, with increased effusion rates during 17-19 and 27-28 June. During the periods of increased effusion rates the flow temperatures were higher, nighttime incandescence was more intense, emissions rose higher, and more pyroclastic flows were recorded. The pyroclastic flows traveled less than 500 m down the NE flank and were sourced from collapses at the sides of L6 and the front of L5. The average temperature was 131 degrees Celsius with a maximum of 174 degrees for L5 and an average of 163 degrees Celsius with a maximum of 181 degrees for L6. Temperatures at the vents at Nicanor Crater were as high as 360 degrees Celsius during explosive phases. Satellite images indicated that the L5 lava flow was 1,033 m long and L6 was 894 m long, and that the distal end of L6 had thickened. The average sulfur dioxide emission rate was 694 (± 43) tons/day, reaching a high value of 903 on 19 June. There was a total of 35 thermal anomalies. The Alert Level remained at Yellow, the second lowest level on a four-colour scale. ONEMI stated that Alert Level Yellow (the middle level on a three-colour scale) remained in place for the communities of Pinto and Coihueco, noting that the public should stay at least 2 km away from the crater.

Popocatepetl – Mexico : CENAPRED reported that each day during 6-13 July there were 47-112 steam-and-gas emissions from Popocatépetl. Some emissions contained ash during 8-13 July. Almost daily periods of low-amplitude tremor lasted from 10 minutes to five hours. A few volcano-tectonic earthquakes were recorded. Crater incandescence was visible at night during 12-13 July. The Alert Level remained at Yellow, Phase Two (middle level on a three-colour scale).

Semeru – Eastern Java (Indonesia) : Semeru continued to erupt during 7-13 July. Inclement weather often prevented visual observations, though a gray-and-white ash plume was seen rising 500 m above the summit and drifting SW on 6 July. The Alert Level remained at 2 (on a scale of 1-4), with a general exclusion zone of 1 km and extensions to 5 km in the SSE sector.

Semisopochnoi – Aleutian Islands (USA) : AVO reported that continuous volcanic tremor at Semisopochnoi began at 1200 on 12 July and explosive activity was recorded by the infrasound network. Emissions began at 1300 and lasted tens of minutes; a sulfur dioxide gas plume possibly containing ash was identified in satellite images drifting S at an altitude less than 1.5 km (5,000 ft) a.s.l. The Aviation colour Code was raised to Orange and the Volcano Alert Level was raised to Watch. Volcanic tremor decreased to low levels after several hours.

Sheveluch – Central Kamchatka (Russia) : KVERT reported that a thermal anomaly over Sheveluch was identified in satellite images during 2-9 July. A plume of re-suspended ash drifted 90 km E during 6-7 July. The Aviation colour Code remained at Orange (the second highest level on a four-colour scale).

Sinabung – Indonesia : PVMBG reported that on most days during 6-13 July white gas-and-steam plumes from Sinabung rose as high as 500 m above the summit. At 0925 on 13 July an eruptive or collapse event produced an ash plume that rose 500 m and drifted ESE. The Alert Level remained at 2 (on a scale of 1-4), and the public was warned to remain outside of the 2-km exclusion zone.

Veniaminof – United States : AVO changed both the Aviation colour Code and Volcano Alert Level for Veniaminof to Green and Normal, respectively, on 8 July, noting that seismic stations were back online. The monitoring network consists of local and regional seismic stations, regional infrasound networks, lightning detection, and satellite image monitoring.

Germany – Flooding after torrential rain has caused widespread damage in Germany. Four people have died and dozens are thought to be missing after buildings collapsed in flooding in Rhineland-Palatinate. Flood-related fatalities were also reported in North Rhine-Westphalia and one person was reported missing in Saxony. Two on-duty emergency workers died in separate incidents in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia on 14 July 2021. Meanwhile the nearby city of Hagen declared a state of emergency and called for people to evacuate their homes after the Volme river burst its banks. Severe flooding has also affected the neighbouring state of Rhineland-Palatinate. As of 15 July, rivers in 15 locations were at the highest warning level. Late on 14 July several buildings collapsed in Schuld in the district of Ahrweiler as a result of flooding. As of early 15 July local police confirmed 4 people had died.

India – Days of heavy monsoon rainfall has triggered flooding and several landslides in northern India, affecting the states of Bihar, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Rescuers have recovered 6 bodies after landslides in Kangra District in Himachal Pradesh on 12 July 2021. More people are thought to be missing and search and rescue operations are ongoing. Meanwhile flooding from the Manjhi River has caused severe damage in the popular tourist destination of Dharamshala City. As of 12 July, NERC reported over 1 million people affected by flooding in 10 districts in Bihar. As many as 7,400 people were evacuated.

Every summer, from July 14 to Aug. 24, the Northern Hemisphere is blanketed with a gleaming barrage of “shooting stars,” or meteors, tiny bits of space rock and dust that burn up in Earth’s atmosphere. The Perseid meteor shower is one of the most famous meteor showers, as the night sky lights up with burning meteors when Earth passes through the dusty remnants left behind by the comet Swift-Tuttle.

Wildfires

Wildfires – Washington, USA

Several wildfires are burning in northcentral Washington state, prompting an evacuation order for the town of Nespelem on the Colville Indian Reservation. There were power outages in the area and phone lines are down. About 60 lightning strikes were reported on or near the reservation on Monday, sparking five wildfires.

The largest had burned approximately 15.6 square miles (40 square kilometers) in grass, sagebrush and timber and had zero containment. The fire killed some livestock and wildlife. As of Tuesday morning, seven structures, including three homes, were lost. Seven outbuildings were also lost.

Bird Flu in Humans – China

Hong Kong health officials report monitoring a human case of avian influenza A(H5N6) in Sichuan Province on the Mainland. The case involves a 55-year-old man living in Bazhong City in Sichuan Province. The patient is in critical condition. The patient had contact with live domestic poultry before the onset of symptoms. This is the 32nd human case of avian influenza A(H5N6) reported by the Mainland health authorities since 2014.

Mucormycosis in Delhi, Zika in Kerala – India

According to officials figures, till July 6, Delhi had recorded 1,656 mucormycosis cases, including 952 active cases. On March 27, the Delhi government had declared black fungus an epidemic.

An alert has been sounded across Kerala over Zika virus. With four more infections reported on Tuesday, the number of confirmed Zika virus cases in Kerala has now risen to 23 — all the cases have been reported from Thiruvananthapuram.

Bagana – Bougainville (Papua New Guinea) : Based on satellite and wind model data, the Darwin VAAC reported that on 9 July an ash plume from Bagana rose to 1.8 km (6,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted W.

Krakatau – Indonesia : The Darwin VAAC reported that on 7 July ash plumes from Anak Krakatau rose to 1.5 km (5,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted NW.

Pavlof – United States : At 1140 on 9 July AVO raised the Volcano Alert Level and Aviation colour Code at Pavlof to Advisory and Yellow, respectively, noting that seismicity had increased during the previous 16 hours and was characterized by near-continuous tremor. Seismicity decreased and was more periodic during 10-13 July, but remained above background levels.

Sarychev Peak – Matua Island (Russia) : SVERT reported that on 29 June and 1 July brief ash emissions from Sarychev Peak rose to 3 km (10,000 ft) a.s.l. A weak thermal anomaly identified in satellite data persisted through 12 July; SVERT lowered the Alert Level to Green (the lowest level on a four-colour scale).

Suwanosejima – Ryukyu Islands (Japan) : JMA reported that 96 explosions at Suwanosejima’s Ontake Crater produced eruption plumes that generally rose 2-2.4 km above the crater rim during 5-12 July. Large volcanic bombs were ejected mainly 400 m from the crater and crater incandescence was visible nightly. Eruption sounds were sometimes heard in Toshima village (4 km SSW). An explosion at 0439 on 8 July ejected large bombs 800 m NW and an explosion at 1319 on 12 July produced an ash plume that rose 3 km. The Alert Level remained at 3 and the public was warned to stay 2 km away from the crater.

Taal – Luzon (Philippines) : PHIVOLCS reported that an eruption at Taal continued during 7-13 July. A series of short-lived phreatomagmatic explosions were recorded at 0518, 0847, 0915, 0926, 1156, and 2141 on 7 July and jetted ash plumes as high has 700 m. Another series was recorded at 0647, 1806, 2121, 2150 on 8 July and 0259 on 9 July, jetting ash 200 m high. During 7-13 July daily plumes of steam and sulfur dioxide gas rose 1-1.5 km from the lake and drifted NW, W, and SW. Sulfur dioxide emissions averaged 4,149-11,397 tonnes/day. Low-level background tremor continued with as many as 185 volcanic earthquakes and 44 low-frequency volcanic earthquakes recorded per day. There were also 5-176 daily episodes of volcanic tremor, each lasting between 1 and 97 minutes. The network also detected 2-10 daily hybrid earthquakes during 6-9 July. The DROMIC report stated that 10,408 people were in evacuation centers or private residences by 12 July. The Alert Level remained at 3 (on a scale of 0-5) and PHIVOLCS reminded the public that the entire Taal Volcano Island is a Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and to not enter the high-risk barangays of Agoncillo and Laurel. Activities on Taal Lake were strictly prohibited.

Manatees are dying in record numbers in Florida

A record-breaking number of manatees have died this year in Florida’s waters, mostly due to starvation. Between Jan. 1 and July 2, 841 manatees died near and off the coast of Florida, according to a preliminary mortality report published by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Florida’s previous deadliest year for manatees was 2013, when 830 manatees died, mostly from exposure to toxins from a harmful algal bloom known as red tide.

The main cause of this year’s die-off, however, is starvation. Most of these manatees died during the colder months, when they migrated to and through the Indian River Lagoon, a group of three lagoons located southeast of Orlando, on Florida’s east coast, where most seagrass had died out.

Desert plant life disappearing due to climate change

The steady decline of plants in Southern California’s portion of the Sonoran Desert — which includes Anza-Borrego Desert State Park — is caused by climate change-driven heat increases, according to a new UC Irvine study.

That area grew hotter by 3 degrees over the study period, 1984 to 2017, with vegetation decreasing an average of about 1% a year in the desert portions of the study area. While fluctuations in rainfall accounted for some of the year-to-year variation, the broader trend resulted overall decrease of 35% of vegetation in desert ecosystems and a 13% decline in the adjacent mountains.

The findings, based on 34 years of NASA satellite images of 5,000 square miles of desert, add to a small but growing body of evidence that manmade climate change is reducing the amount of vegetation in drylands — primarily desert areas — worldwide, with trickle-down effects on animals and, in some cases, humans. About 41% of the Earth’s land mass is drylands, according to the UCI report.

More than 300,000 acres are burning across six states across the western United States on Sunday as the region battled yet another brutal heat wave that shattered records and strained power grids.

The largest, the so-called Bootleg Fire, burned across 143,607 acres in Oregon and was 0% contained. Officials in neighboring state California asked all residents to reduce power consumption quickly after the fire knocked out interstate power lines, preventing up to 4,000 megawatts of electricity from flowing into the state.

Further south, the equally formidable Beckwourth Complex Fire measured 83,926 acres and was 8% contained in California, edging along the border with Nevada. It’s the largest wildfire of the year in the state.

The fire is composed of the Dotta and Sugar fires. The Dotta Fire is approximately 670 acres and 99% contained. The Sugar Fire is 83,256 acres and 8% contained.

The Forest and Animal Husbandry Department in Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu state, India are reporting the death of a wild elephant from anthrax in Anaikatti. The elephant is a female, age 13-15 years. Blood smears collected from the carcass showed the presence of the bacterium, Bacillus anthracis.

Naegleria fowleri – Pakistan

In a follow-up to the situation in Karachi, Pakistan and the brain-eating amoeba, Naegleria fowleri, health officials Monday confirmed another amoebic meningitis fatality, the fifth in the city in recent months.

India – As a result of heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh on Sunday night, the state witnessed flash floods on Monday. Two persons are reportedly missing in Kangra district. In Kangra district, houses were flooded and vehicles were seen floating in the water. Bhagsu Nag in Dharamshala experienced flooding and Manjhi river’s water level rose. In Rakkar village, the road turned into a drain. A similar situation was observed across Kangra district.

High Tide Floods to get worse

High-tide floods, also called “nuisance floods,” occur in coastal areas when tides reach about 2 feet (0.6 meters) above the daily average high tide and begin to flood onto streets or seep through storm drains. True to their nickname, these floods are more of a nuisance than an outright calamity, inundating streets and homes, forcing businesses to close and causing cesspools to overflow — but the longer they last, the more damage they can do.

The U.S. experienced more than 600 of these floods in 2019, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). But now, a new study led by NASA warns that nuisance floods will become a much more frequent occurrence in the U.S. as soon as the 2030s, with a majority of the U.S. coastline expected to see three to four times as many high-tide flood days each year for at least a decade.

The moon influences the tides, but the power of the moon’s pull isn’t equal from year to year; the moon actually has a “wobble” in its orbit, slightly altering its position relative to Earth on a rhythmic 18.6-year cycle. For half of the cycle, the moon suppresses tides on Earth, resulting in lower high tides and higher low tides. For the other half of the cycle, tides are amplified, with higher high tides and lower low tides, according to NASA.

We are currently in the tide-amplifying part of the cycle; the next tide-amplifying cycle begins in the mid-2030s; — and, by then, global sea levels will have risen enough to make those higher-than-normal high tides particularly troublesome

Japan – Around 300 people evacuated their homes in Kagoshima after torrential rain in Japan. On 10 July, Satsuma in Kagoshima recorded 96.5 mm of rain in 1 hour and 209.0 mm in 3 hours. Satsumasendai City in Kagoshima recorded 95.5 mm in 1 hour, and Ebino in Miyazaki recorded 83.5 mm. According to Japan’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA) a road collapsed in Satsuma due to flooding, leaving 34 people isolated. A dam in the town threatened to fail, prompting the evacuation of around 300 people. Meanwhile rescuers continue to work through the debris of the devastating mudslide that struck in Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture on 03 July 2021. According to the latest update, 9 people have been confirmed dead and 20 are still missing.

Colombia – Severe flooding has affected parts of Magdalena Department in northern Colombia since early July 2021. According to the government of Magdalena Department, the Seville and Frío rivers overflowed on 03 July 2021, flooding the communities of Guacamayal, Sevilla, Gran Vía and Orihueca in the municipality of Zona Bananera. As of 07 July, as many as 5,576 families were affected.The departmental government is also working on shoring up river embankments to prevent further flooding.

UK – Heavy rainfall in eastern England, UK on 09 July 2021 caused streets to flood, disrupting traffic and damaging homes and businesses. The city of Peterborough in Cambridgeshire was the worst affected. Flooding was also reported in areas around the city of Norwich in Norfolk, damaging some buildings and leaving roads impassable.

Chad – The United Nations reports that 5 people died and thousands are in need of shelter after torrential rain in Chad in central Africa from late June 2021. UN OCHA said 5 people died and 231 were injured. Furthermore around 4,413 houses were destroyed and over 30 educational and health buildings were severely damaged or destroyed. Livestock also suffered. The UN says the damage in Tandjilé Prefecture has left 20,000 people in need of shelter, food, and health assistance.

USA – The state of Texas is making preparations after torrential rain affected South Texas and Coastal Bend communities over the last few days. High water rescues were reported in Rockport where several roads were impassable. A wide area of low pressure over southern Texas brought days of torrential rainfall. In a 96 hour period to 09 July, Rockport recorded 18.31 inches (465 mm) of rain.

Death Valley is more than earning its morbid name this weekend, as temperatures in the California desert reached a near-record-breaking 130 degrees Fahrenheit (54.4 degrees Celsius).

That makes it a tie for the hottest temperature ever verified on Earth since the mercury hit 131 F (55 C) on July 7, 1931, in Kebili, Tunisia. Though an even hotter temperature of 134 F (56.7 C) was recorded in Furnace Creek (then called Greenland Ranch) in Death Valley, on July 10, 1913, per Guinness World Records, some climate scientists say that reading was not verified.

Massive oil pipeline is threatened by thawing permafrost

The Trans-Alaska Pipeline, one of the world’s largest oil pipelines, could be in danger.

Thawing permafrost threatens to undermine the supports holding up an elevated section of the pipeline, jeopardizing its structural integrity and raising the potential of an oil spill in a delicate and remote landscape.

The slope of permafrost where an 810-foot section of the pipeline is secured has started to shift as it thaws, causing several of the braces holding up the pipeline to twist and bend.

Air quality advisories are in effect for a large swathe of South and Central Oregon as two large wildfires in the region burn through forests, forcing road closures and prompting evacuation orders in some rural communities.

The Bootleg Fire in Klamath County, which started Tuesday, had grown to nearly 39,000 acres by Friday morning. It’s burning in the Fremont-Winema National Forest, near the community of Sprague River, prompting closures of public lands and evacuations of some rural residents of the area.

In Douglas County, meanwhile, the Jack Fire was burning more than 5,400 acres on forest lands east of Roseburg as of Friday morning. A stretch of Highway 138 is closed due to falling rocks and flames along the roadside.

Eye of Fire

A rare combination of events near a Mexican oil platform in the Bay of Campeche created a massive ocean-surface fire that took hours to extinguish.

Mexico’s state-owned Pemex oil company, which has a long history of major accidents at its facilities, says the leak of an underwater pipeline allowed natural gas to accumulate on the ocean floor, and was probably ignited by a lightning bolt when it rose to the surface. Once a brief video of the fire went viral on social media, the orange bubbling mass on the water’s surface was dubbed “eye of fire.”

Pemex said swift action by its workers prevented any environmental damage, a claim disputed by environmental groups and activists.

The deadly heat wave that roasted the U.S. Pacific Northwest and western Canada also cooked more than a billion seashore animals to death, leaving a putrid stink near Vancouver, B.C.

University of British Columbia experts say the heat, combined with low tides in the middle of the afternoon, created dangerous combinations for animals like clams and mussels for more than six hours at a time.

Observers say temperatures above 122 degrees Fahrenheit occurred on some rocky shoreline habitats. Professor Dave Sauchyn of Canada’s University of Regina says this summer’s unprecedented heat occurred years earlier than predicted by models, in a sign that the climate emergency is deepening faster than expected.

Aira – Kyushu (Japan) : JMA reported nightly incandescence during 28 June-5 July from Minamidake Crater (at Aira Caldera’s Sakurajima volcano). An eruptive event on 29 June produced an ash plume that rose 1 km before entering weather clouds. The sulfur dioxide emission rate was low at 600 tons per day on 30 June. The Alert Level remained at 3 (on a 5-level scale), and residents were warned to stay 2 km away from the crater.

Dukono – Halmahera (Indonesia) : Based on satellite and wind model data, the Darwin VAAC reported that during 29 June-3 July ash plumes from Dukono rose to 2.1 km (7,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted in multiple directions. The Alert Level remained at 2 (on a scale of 1-4), and the public was warned to remain outside of the 2-km exclusion zone.

Ebeko – Paramushir Island (Russia) : According to volcanologists in Severo-Kurilsk (Paramushir Island), about 7 km E of Ebeko, explosions during 27-28 June and 1 July produced ash plumes that rose as high as 2 km (6,600 ft) a.s.l. and drifted in multiple directions. The Aviation colour Code remained at Orange (the second highest level on a four-colour scale).

Etna – Sicily (Italy) : INGV reported three episodes of lava fountaining at Etna’s Southeast Crater (SEC) during 28 June-4 July, producing ash plumes that rose 5-10 km (16,400-32,800 ft) a.s.l. Occasional ash-and-gas emissions rose from Bocca Nuova Crater and Northeast Crater. The first episode at SEC began with Strombolian activity at 0040 on 2 July. Ash plumes drifted ESE and within an hour lava fountains were visible that sent flows SW; fountaining ceased at 0250. The second episode began at 1656 on 4 July, produced fountains at 1725, and ended at 1900. Lava flows traveled SW and ENE, and ash plumes drifted ESE. The last episode began at 2330 on 6 July and produced ash plumes that drifted SE. Explosive activity intensified at 0000 on 7 July; lava fountaining began 30 minutes later, rose as high as 1 km, and ended within two hours. Lapilli was reported in the S part of Tremestieri and ash fell in Nicolosi, as well as in many other areas downwind. According to news articles the Catania airport was closed during the night due to ashfall.

Kadovar – Papua New Guinea : Based on satellite and wind model data, the Darwin VAAC reported that on 4 July an ash plume from Kadovar rose to an altitude of 1.5 km (5,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted W.

Karymsky – Eastern Kamchatka (Russia) : KVERT reported that a thermal anomaly over Karymsky was visible in satellite images on 25 and 30 June and 1 July; the volcano was quiet or obscured by weather clouds on the other days during 26 June-2 July. The Aviation colour Code remained at Orange (the second highest level on a four-colour scale).

Krysuvik-Trolladyngja – Iceland : The fissure eruption in the W part of the Krýsuvík-Trölladyngja volcanic system, close to Fagradalsfjall on the Reykjanes Peninsula, periodically continued during 30 June-6 July. Lava fountaining and overflows from the fifth vent were occasionally visible, and lava from the crater flowed in tubes as well as on the surface. Occasional rim collapses generated minor ash plumes on 2 July based on footage captured by a visitor. A longest pause in the eruption so far, also reflected in seismic data, began near midnight on 5 July and ended early on 7 July according to a news source. The Aviation colour Code remained at Orange due to the lack of ash and tephra emissions, though IMO warned of the potential for lapilli and scoria fallout within a 650 m radius of the active vent. Authorities warned of increased gas emissions hazards.

Kuchinoerabujima – Ryukyu Islands (Japan) : JMA reported that deformation data at Kuchinoerabujima had shown a deflationary trend since February and the number of volcanic earthquakes had been decreasing since May. The Alert Level was lowered to 2 (on a scale of 1-5) on 5 July, and JMA reminded the public to stay 1 km away from Shindake Crater in general and 2 km away from the W flank.

Lewotolok – Lembata Island (Indonesia) : PVMBG reported that daily white-and-gray plumes from Lewotolok rose as high as 1 km and drifted in multiple directions during 29 June-6 July. Incandescent material was ejected from the summit vent in various directions during 2-5 July; on 3 July material landed as far as 1 km SW and started vegetation fires. On 5 July an ash plume rose 1 km and drifted SE. The Alert Level remained at 3 (on a scale of 1-4) and the public was warned to stay 3 km away from the summit crater.

Merapi – Central Java (Indonesia) : BPPTKG reported that the lava dome just below Merapi’s SW rim and the lava dome in the summit crater both remained active during 25 June-1 July. The SW rim lava-dome volume was an estimated 1.68 million cubic meters by 1 July, with a growth rate of 11,800 cubic meters per day, and continued to shed material down the flank. The summit lava dome was 0.5 m shorter than the previous week, corresponding to the increasing numbers of incandescent avalanches and pyroclastic flows as more material was shed to the SE. A total of 10 pyroclastic flows traveled a maximum of 2 km down the SW flank and 29 traveled as far as 3 km SE. As many as 100 incandescent avalanches traveled a maximum of 2 km down the SW flank and 26 traveled as far as 1.2 km down the SE flank. Ashfall was reported in several areas to the SE on 25 June. The Alert Level remained at 3 (on a scale of 1-4), and the public was warned to stay 5 km away from the summit.

Reventador – Ecuador : IG reported that a high level of activity continued to be recorded at Reventador during 29 June-6 July; adverse weather conditions sometimes prevented visual confirmation. Seismicity was characterized by daily explosions, harmonic tremor events, long-period earthquakes, and signals indicating emissions. Gas, steam, and ash plumes, often observed multiple times a day with the webcam or reported by the Washington VAAC, rose as high as 1.6 km above the summit crater and drifted mainly W, NW, and NE. Crater incandescence and incandescent blocks rolling down the S flank were often observed at night.

Semeru – Eastern Java (Indonesia) : Semeru continued to erupt during 29 June-6 July. Inclement weather often prevented visual observations, though PVMBG and the Darwin VAAC reported that gray-and-white plumes rose 500 m above the summit and drifted in multiple directions on 30 June and 1 and 3 July. The Alert Level remained at 2 (on a scale of 1-4), with a general exclusion zone of 1 km and extensions to 5 km in the SSE sector.

Sheveluch – Central Kamchatka (Russia): KVERT reported that a thermal anomaly over Sheveluch was identified in satellite images during 25 June-2 July. An ash plume drifted 18 km SW on 30 June. The Aviation colour Code remained at Orange (the second highest level on a four-colour scale).

Stromboli – Aeolian Islands (Italy) : INGV reported that during 28 June-4 July activity at Stromboli was characterized by ongoing explosive activity from three vents in Area N (North Crater area) and four vents in Area C-S (South-Central Crater area). Explosions from the N1 vent (Area N) ejected lapilli and bombs 150 m high, and produced minor ash emissions. Explosions at N2 vents (Area N) averaged 4-10 events per hour and ejected material 80 m high; spattering was intense on 28 June. Explosions from the S2 vents in Area C-S occurred at a rate of 5-8 events per hour and ejected coarse material more than 150 m high.

Telica – Nicaragua : INETER reported that at 0500 on 29 June ash-and-gas emissions from Telica rose 200 m above the crater rim and drifted SW. The Washington VAAC noted that ash was emitted during 2-3 July. A few discrete emissions and ash near the crater were visible in webcam images on 2 July, and possible diffuse ash just W of the crater was seen in satellite images. Plumes likely rose to 1.2-1.5 km (4,000-5,000 ft) a.s.l. Another steam-and-ash plume drifted SW and then turned N. On 3 July possible ash plumes rose to 1.5 km (5,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted WSW.

A total of 137 natural disasters across the country throughout June 2021, including earthquakes, forest fires and tornadoes. However, the agency said hydrometeorological disasters still dominate natural disasters in the country, with as many as 33 floods and 39 landslides occurring in June this year. Over 30 people were injured and 2 people died in flood- and rain-related disasters in June. As many as 15,000 homes were flooded.

Hottest June in North America

If the melting power cables in Portland, Oregon, weren’t enough of an indication, new satellite data confirms what many sweat-drenched Americans could have guessed: June 2021 was the single hottest June on record in North America.

The month saw record heat waves blast the Pacific Northwest and western Canada, with stagnant air bearing down on densely populated cities, like Seattle and Portland, for several days in a row. The culprit was a dangerous weather phenomenon called an omega block, which is essentially a dome of hot air trapped in place by atmospheric currents.

Copahue – Central Chile-Argentina border : SERNAGEOMIN and SEGEMAR reported increased activity at Copahue, beginning with minor, sporadic increases in tremor first detected at the end of May. During 30 June-2 July tremor was elevated and volume of water in the crater lake decreased significantly. Coincidently crater incandescence was visible in nighttime webcam views and gas emissions increased. Residents reported volcanic gas odors. Increased gas-and-steam emissions during 1100-1400 on 2 July contained minor amounts of ash that left visible deposits on the SE and ENE flanks.

Krakatau – Indonesia ; The Darwin VAAC reported that on 2 July ash plumes from Anak Krakatau rose to 1.5 km (5,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted SW.

Rincon de la Vieja – Costa Rica : OVSICORI-UNA reported that an eruption at Rincón de la Vieja was recorded at 0838 on 1 July, though weather conditions prevented visual conformation of emissions. Small emissions were visible at 0937, 0940, and 1006 on 3 July. Small steam plumes were seen on 4 July, but too small to be recorded by the seismic network.

Sarychev Peak – Matua Island (Russia) : The Tokyo VAAC and SVERT reported that during 30 June-1 July ash plumes from Sarychev Peak rose to 3-5.5 km (10,000-18,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted W, SE, and E based on satellite images. Plumes drifted as far as 25 km E on 1 July. The Alert Level remained at Yellow (the second lowest level on a four-COLOUR scale).

Suwanosejima – Ryukyu Islands (Japan) : JMA reported that 35 explosions at Suwanosejima’s Ontake Crater produced eruption plumes that rose as high as 2 km above the crater rim during 28 June-5 July. Large volcanic bombs were ejected 400 m from the crater and crater incandescence was visible nightly. Eruption sounds were heard in Toshima village (4 km SSW). The Alert Level remained at 3 and the public was warned to stay 2 km away from the crater.

Taal – Luzon (Philippines) : PHIVOLCS reported that anomalously high sulfur dioxide emissions were recorded at Taal, averaging 14,241 and 13,287 tonnes/day on 28 June and 1 July, respectively. Upwelling of hot volcanic fluids in the crater lake produced steam-and-gas plumes that rose as high as 3 km. Vog in the vicinity of the volcano persisted. At 1516 on 1 July a phreatomagmatic eruption generated a dark, 5-minute-long, Surtseyan plume that rose 1 km above the lake. The Alert Level was raised to 3 (on a scale of 0-5) at 1537. According to news articles and the Philippine Coast Guard, authorities began evacuating residents in Banyaga, Bilibinwang, Gulod, Boso-boso, and Lakeshore Bugaan East around 1700. Four additional short eruptions (less than two minutes) were recorded at 1826, 1921, 1941, and 2020, each ejecting material as high as 200 m. More phreatomagmatic eruptions on 2 July, at 1025, 1047, and 1101, jetted material 100 m above the lake. Sulfur dioxide emissions averaged 10,254 tonnes/day. Vigorous upwelling in the lake was visible in the afternoon, and steam-and-gas plumes that rose as high as 3 km drifted SW and NW. On 3 July steam-and-gas plumes rose 2.5-3 km and drifted SW and NW. Sulfur dioxide emissions averaged 14,699 tonnes/day, the highest ever measured from Taal. The high emissions and weather conditions again created vog in the area. A news article noted that about 10 children showed signs of illness from the vog. On 4 July PHIVOLCS issued a special advisory noting, again, a new record-breaking high of sulfur dioxide emissions at 22,628 tonnes/day. A total of 26 strong and very shallow low-frequency volcanic earthquakes below the E part of TVI had been recorded since the beginning of the day. Some of the earthquakes were accompanied by rumbling and weakly felt by fish cage caretakers off the NE shore. Lake upwelling persisted during 5-6 July with steam-and-gas plumes rising 2.5-3 km. Sulfur dioxide emissions averaged 5,299 tonnes/day on 5 July. The DROMIC report stated that 3,027 people were in 20 evacuation centers, and 2,759 people were in private residences by 6 July.

South Korea – Two people have died and dozens evacuated as a result of landslides and flooding after torrential rain in South Korea. Heavy rain began on 05 July 2021. Hyeonsan in Haenam County recorded 529.5 mm of rain in 24 hours to 06 July. Homes and more than 7,500 hectares of farmland were flooded and power supply and transport interrupted in South Jeolla Province.

Indonesia – Disaster authorities in Indonesia report flooding and landslides in Aceh Province in the north of Sumatra Island have affected more than 6,000 people since 05 July 2021. Floods accompanied by some landslides were reported in seven districts of Teunom, Panga, Darul Hikmah, Setia Bakti, Krueng Sabee, Sampoiniet and Jaya. Several villages were left isolated after a bridge in Jaya District was severely damaged. As of 06 July, 6,408 people were affected and 2,034 houses submerged. Some areas were under 70cm of water. As of 06 July, no evacuations, casualties or injures were reported.

Russia – Authorities in Krasnodar Region of Russia declared a state of emergency after torrential rain caused flooding over the last 2 days. Strong winds and rough seas have also caused damage. Heavy rainfall in the region began on 04 July 2021, worsening on 05 July. The coastal town of Dzhubga recorded 170 mm of rain. Veniamin Kondratyev, the governor of Krasnodar Krai, said some areas saw more than 2 months’ worth of rain in a few hours. The Khorota and Matsesta rivers, among others, both broke their banks. The Krasnodar regional government declared an emergency due to flooding for areas of Sochi, Gelendzhik, Tuapse, Slavyansky, Seversky and Goryachy Klyuch. As of 06 July, over 660 homes and yards were flooded.

Crimea – Dozens of people have evacuated homes after more flooding in Russian annexed Crimea after heavy rain caused rives to overflow. The worst affected areas are in Bakhchisarai District, where the Belbek and Kokkozka rivers broke their banks. As of 05 July, 164 people including 31 children had been evacuated and as many as 100 homes flooded. Twelve temporary accommodation centres have been set up to house those displaced. 1 person died and 1 was injured in the Bakhchisarai floods.

Unprecedented heat – Climate change is frying the Northern Hemisphere

The tiny town of Lytton has come to hold a grim record. On Tuesday, it experienced Canada’s highest-ever temperature, in an unprecedented heat wave that has over a week killed hundreds of people and triggered more than 240 wildfires across British Columbia, most of which are still burning. Lytton hit 49.6 degrees Celsius (121.3 degrees Fahrenheit), astounding for the town of just 250 people nestled in the mountains, where June maximum temperatures are usually around 25 degrees. Now fires have turned much of Lytton to ash and forced its people, as well as hundreds around them, to flee.

Roads melted last week in America’s Northwest, and residents in New York City were told not to use high-energy appliances, like washers and dryers — and painfully, even their air conditioners — for the sake of the power grid.

In Russia, Moscow reported its highest-ever June temperature of 34.8 degrees on June 23, and Siberian farmers are scrambling to save their crops from dying in an ongoing heat wave. Even in the Arctic Circle, temperatures soared into the 30s.

In India, tens of millions of people in the northwest were affected by heat waves.

And in Iraq, authorities announced a public holiday across several provinces for Thursday, including the capital Baghdad, because it was simply too hot to work or study, after temperatures surpassed 50 degrees and its electricity system collapsed.

Hundreds of people have been reported to have died from the various heatwaves across North America, Russia and India.

Huge Methane Plume over China

A massive plume of methane, the potent greenhouse gas that’s a key contributor to global warming, has been identified in China’s biggest coal production region.

The release in northeast Shanxi province is one of the largest that geoanalytics company Kayrros SAS has so far attributed to the global coal sector and likely emanated from multiple mining operations.

Details captured in European Space Agency satellite data show the plume about 90 kilometers (56 miles) east of Shanxi’s capital Taiyuan, in Yangquan City. The area has 34 coals mines, according to the Shanxi Energy Bureau.

The emissions rate needed to produce the plume observed in the June 18 satellite image would be several hundred metric tons an hour. For comparison, a 200-ton per hour release would have roughly an equivalent climate warming in the first two decades as 800,000 cars driving at 60 miles an hour.

Authorities in Cyprus have said a deadly forest fire, that was the worst to hit the island in decades, was close to being brought under control after water bombing by Greek and Israeli aircraft.

Fanned by strong winds, the fire broke out on Saturday afternoon and swept through the southern foothills of the Troodos mountain range as the country grappled with a blistering heatwave.

The blaze killed four Egyptian labourers, destroyed 50 homes, damaged farms and power lines, and forced the evacuation of 10 villages. So far, 55 square kilometres of pine forest and orchards have been scorched.

Wildfires – Canada

Emergency responders in Canada are currently battling more than 180 wildfires in British Columbia amid an intense heat wave that has left hundreds dead in the Pacific Northwest.

About 70% of the active fires were likely caused by lightning strikes, according to the British Columbia Wildfire Service’s dashboard. Chris Vagasky, a meteorologist with the company Vaisala, says a lightning detection network uncovered more than 700,000 lightning strikes in the area between June 30 and July 1.

About 95 miles northeast of Vancouver, residents in the village of Lytton were forced to evacuate to avoid a spreading fire that began Wednesday afternoon.

While two residents have already been confirmed dead by the British Columbia Coroners Service, others are still missing.

Flooding also damaged 70,300 hectares of crops.

Japan – As many as 20 people are feared missing in central Japan after a huge landslide hit Atami city in the prefecture of Shizuoka following days of heavy rainfall. t least 13 active wildfires across California have burned just over 60,000 acres of land, as fire officials continue to try to contain each.

The Lava Fire in Siskiyou County is the largest active wildfire in the state. The Lava Fire has burned at least 19,680 acres, northeast of the community of Weed, and is 27 percent contained.

Following behind the Lava Fire in size is the Tennant Fire, which also is in Siskiyou County near Tennant Road and Pengrass Road. According to Cal Fire data, the Tennant Fire has burned 9,439 acres and is just 6 percent contained.

The Willow Fire in Monterey County has burned at least 2,877 acres and is 87 percent contained.

Epic Migration

A species of butterfly migrates thousands of miles from sub-Saharan Africa to Europe during years when the weather is favorable. The painted lady’s 8,700-mile migration is the longest known in the insect world.

“We know that the number of painted lady butterflies in Europe varies wildly, sometimes with 100 times more from one year to the next,” said Tom Oliver of England’s University of Reading. That variability can now be explained by the weather, which may also affect other insects as the climate warms. “We enjoy seeing the beautiful painted lady butterflies in our gardens in Europe, but climate change will also lead to shifts in invasive species that are crop pests or those that spread diseases,” Oliver warns.

Avian Mystery Disease

Birds from Washington, D.C., to Kentucky have recently been found suffering from a mysterious illness that causes them to have crusty eyes and swollen faces that prevent them from flying.

The affected species have so far been blue jays, common grackles and European starlings. People who have discovered the ill birds say they act like they are blind and are not afraid of people.

Since bird feeders and birdbaths can spread disease among feathered creatures, experts advise residents in the affected region to stop feeding the birds and to clean their feeders and baths with a 10% beach solution, wearing gloves to avoid exposure to any pathogens.

The Canadian town of Lytton in British Columbia has been engulfed in flames after temperatures there soared to a record 49.4 degrees. The town’s mayor, Jan Polderman issued a town-wide evacuation order at 18:00 on June 30 urging residents to safely leave the village because a “fire event” is threatening the “building structures and safety of the residents within the municipality.”

More than 78 wildfires have been sparked across Canada during the current heat wave conditions.

Dukono – Halmahera (Indonesia) ;: Based on satellite and wind model data, the Darwin VAAC reported that during 23-29 June ash plumes from Dukono rose to 2.1 km (7,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted N, NW, and W. The Alert Level remained at 2 (on a scale of 1-4), and the public was warned to remain outside of the 2-km exclusion zone.

Ebeko – Paramushir Island (Russia) ; According to volcanologists in Severo-Kurilsk (Paramushir Island), about 7 km E of Ebeko, explosions during 18-25 June produced ash plumes that rose as high as 4.5 km (14,800 ft) a.s.l. and drifted in multiple directions. The Aviation colour Code remained at Orange (the second highest level on a four-colour scale).

Etna – Sicily (Italy) : INGV reported that there were nine episodes of lava fountaining at Etna’s Southeast Crater (SEC) during 21-27 June. The episodes were recorded shortly after midnight on 21 June, at dawn on 22 June, at dawn and sunset on 23 June, in the late morning on 24 June, at dawn and sunset on 25 June, in the afternoon on 26 June, and during the late morning of 27 June. Explosive activity was concentrated in the W part of SEC at three of the four saddle vents; some weak explosions occurred at the E vents. The episodes produced ash plumes that rose 5-10 km (16,400-32,800 ft) a.s.l. and lava flows that traveled SW and SE. Lava also began to effuse on 23 June from the vent on the SE flank of the SEC cone. INGV noted that these continuing episodes have caused the SEC cone to grow significantly, especially compared to the previous year, changing not only it’s morphology but the whole profile of Etna as well.

Fuego – Guatemala : INSIVUMEH reported that on 24 June lahars resulting from substantial rainfall descended the Las Lajas and El Jute drainages on Fuego’s ESE flank, carrying tree branches, trunks, and blocks as large as 1 m in diameter. During 23-29 June there were 4-15 explosions per hour, generating ash plumes as high as 1.1 km above the crater rim. Daily shock waves rattled buildings in towns around the volcano. Ashfall was reported daily in several areas downwind, including Panimaché I and II (8 km SW), Santa Sofía (12 km SW), El Porvenir (8 km ENE), La Rochela, El Zapote, and Sangre de Cristo (8 km WSW). Block avalanches descended the Ceniza (SSW), Seca (W), Trinidad (S), Taniluyá (SW), Las Lajas (SE), and Honda drainages, often reaching vegetated areas. Explosions ejected incandescent material 100-400 m above the summit each day.

Karymsky – Eastern Kamchatka (Russia) : KVERT reported that a thermal anomaly over Karymsky was visible in satellite images on 23 June; the volcano was quiet or obscured by weather clouds on the other days during 18-25 June. The Aviation colour Code remained at Orange (the second highest level on a four-colour scale).

Krysuvik-Trolladyngja – Iceland : The fissure eruption in the W part of the Krýsuvík-Trölladyngja volcanic system, close to Fagradalsfjall on the Reykjanes Peninsula, continued during 23-29 June. Lava fountaining and overflows from the fifth vent were periodically visible, and lava from the crater flowed in tubes as well as on the surface. The Institute of Earth Sciences noted that during 11-26 June the lava effusion rate averaged 13 cubic meters per second, which was high but similar to rates during May. The area of the flow field had grown to 3.82 square kilometers, and the total volume erupted was 80 million cubic meters. Lava flows thickened 10-15 m in the Meradalir Valley, 15 m in the Nátthaga Valley, and 20 m in the S and E part of Geldingadalur. The Aviation colour Code remained at Orange due to the lack of ash and tephra emissions, though IMO warned of the potential for lapilli and scoria fallout within a 650 m radius of the active vent. Authorities warned of increased gas emissions hazards.

Lewotolok – Lembata Island (Indonesia) : PVMBG reported that daily white-and-gray plumes from Lewotolok during 22-29 June rose as high as 600 m and drifted W. The Alert Level remained at 3 (on a scale of 1-4) and the public was warned to stay 3 km away from the summit crater.

Manam – Papua New Guinea : The Darwin VAAC reported that on 23 June ash plumes from Manam rose to 2.1-2.4 km (7,000-8,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted W, WNW, and NW.

Merapi – Central Java (Indonesia) : BPPTKG reported that the lava dome just below Merapi’s SW rim and the lava dome in the summit crater both continued to grow during 18-24 June. The SW rim lava-dome volume was an estimated 1.59 million cubic meters by 24 June, with a growth rate of 11,400 cubic meters per day, and continued to shed material down the flank. A total of 17 pyroclastic flows traveled a maximum of 2.5 km down the SW flank and five traveled 1.4 km SE. Incandescent avalanches, recorded 206 times, traveled as far as 2 km down the SW flank and 600 m SE. The summit lava dome grew taller by 0.5 m. Beginning at 0443 on 25 June a series of three pyroclastic flows traveled 3 km down the SE flank and produced ash plumes that rose 1 km above the summit and drifted SE. Several towns to the SE reported ashfall. The Alert Level remained at 3 (on a scale of 1-4), and the public was warned to stay 5 km away from the summit.

Sheveluch – Central Kamchatka (Russia) : KVERT reported that a thermal anomaly over Sheveluch was identified in satellite images during 18-25 June. The newest lava block (named “Dolphin-2”) that had extruded from the top of the lava dome in February was about 200 m tall and 170 m wide at the base on 16 June; the top was slowly crumbling. The Aviation colour Code remained at Orange (the second highest level on a four-colour scale).

Taal – Luzon (Philippines) : PHIVOLCS reported that unrest at Taal continued during 22-29 June. Low-level background tremor continued with as many as 10 volcanic earthquake per day. As many as three low-frequency volcanic earthquakes were detected during 23-26 June and 0-3 episodes of volcanic tremor during 23-27 June lasted two minutes to two hours. Upwelling of hot volcanic fluids in the crater lake produced steam-and-gas plumes that rose as high as 2.1 km and drifted in multiple directions. Sulfur dioxide emissions averaged 2,284-5,129 tonnes/day. In a special report issued on 28 June PHIVOLCS warned that public that the high levels of sulfur dioxide, the gas-and-steam plumes rising as high as 3 km above the lake’s surface, and weather conditions had caused vog over the Taal Caldera region. They issued another special statement on 29 June noting that on 28 June sulfur dioxide emissions averaged 14,326 tonnes/day, the highest rate ever recorded at Taal. Voggy conditions persisted, mainly impacting the NE and E lakeshore communities, with some residents reporting adverse effects. PHIVOLCS noted the continuing state of elevated unrest, reminding the public that the Alert Level for Taal remained at 2 (on a scale of 0-5). PHIVOLCS strongly recommended no entry onto the island, and access to the Main Crater, Daang Kastila fissure (along the walking trail), and boating on Taal Lake was strictly prohibited.

India – Disaster authorities in the state of Assam, north eastern India, reported on 30 June that overflowing rivers have affected over 7,000 people in the last 24 hours. A total of 7,587 people have been affected in Dhemaji and Dibrugarh districts. As of 30 June there were no displacements. Flooding has also caused damage in Bongaigaon district including 13 roads and 4 bridges. Over 230 hectares of crops were also damaged in the district. One bridge and 867 hectares of crops were damaged in Dhemaji. India’s Central Water Commission reports that rivers are currently above the danger mark in several locations in the state.

Wildfires – California, USA

The Lava Fire in Siskiyou County exploded to 13,330 acres as of Tuesday morning. In the process, it became California’s largest wildfire of the 2021 fire season, so far. The Lava Fire ignited in Siskiyou County in Northern California on June 24. According to an incident report, the fire was sparked by a lightning strike and is currently burning in brush and timber.

Evacuations were ordered Monday afternoon for the Lake Shastina and Juniper Valley areas, affecting thousands of people. As of Tuesday morning, the fire is 20% contained. No injuries or structure damages have been reported yet.

Rincon de la Vieja – Costa Rica : OVSICORI-UNA reported that at 0542 on 28 June an eruption at Rincón de la Vieja produced a steam-and-ash plume that rose 2 km above the crater rim and ejected material onto the flanks. Residents in Gavilan de Dos Ríos (7 km N and NNW) and Bromelias (6 km NNE) reported volcanic gas odors and ashfall. Lahars descended multiple drainages on the N flank.

Sarychev Peak – Matua Island (Russia) : SVERT reported that thermal anomalies over Sarychev Peak were identified in satellite images on 12, 23, 25, and 29 June. At 0020 on 30 June an ash plume was visible in satellite data rising 3 km (10,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifting 30 km WNW. The Alert Level was raised to Yellow (the second lowest level on a four-colour scale) on 30 June.

Suwanosejima – Ryukyu Islands (Japan) _ JMA reported that eruptive activity at Suwanosejima’s Ontake Crater increased during 21-23 June with multiple events. Eruptive events at 2254 on 21 June and 0004 on 23 June ejected large incandescent bombs 900 m NW and SE (respectively) from the crater; eruption plumes rose 1.2 km above the crater rim. The increased activity prompted JMA to raise the Alert Level to 3 at 0015 on 23 June and warn the public to stay at least 2 m away from the active crater. During an overflight on 23 June scientists noted incandescence on the crater floor and that there were several high-temperature deposits scattered in and around the crater. White plumes rose 200-300 m above the crater rim. Multiple eruptive events during 23-28 June ejected bombs 600 m and produced ash plumes that rose as high as 2.3 km.

USA – Two people have died in western Texas as a result of heavy rain and flooding in the region that began 27 June 2021. Flooding was also reported in neighbouring Chihuahua state of Mexico, where at least 5 people had to be rescued.

USA – Flash floods struck parts of the state of New Mexico after more than 5 inches of rain (127 mm) fell in 24 hours. Levels of the Pecos River and Dark Canyon jumped, causing flooding in areas around Carlsbad and Eddy County on 29 June 2021. Almost 30 roadways were closed as a result. Eddy County officials said residents living near the Tansill Dam and Reservoir were evacuating. The Carlsbad Caverns National Park has been closed due to flooding.

Enormous Antarctic lake vanishes in 3 days

An enormous, ice-covered lake in Antarctica vanished suddenly, and scientists are worried it could happen again.

In this disappearing act, which researchers say occurred during the 2019-2020 winter on the Amery Ice Shelf in East Antarctica, an estimated 21 billion to 26 billion cubic feet (600 million to 750 million cubic meters) of water — roughly twice the volume of San Diego Bay — drained into the ocean.

The scientists who used satellite observations to capture the shocking vanishing act say the lake drained in roughly three days after the ice shelf beneath it gave way.

“We believe the weight of water accumulated in this deep lake opened a fissure in the ice shelf beneath the lake, a process known as hydrofracture, causing the water to drain away to the ocean below,” Roland Warner, a glaciologist at the University of Tasmania.

Hydrofracturing leaves behind a gigantic fissure which compromises the structural integrity of the sheet as a whole. As meltwater lakes and streams multiply across the surface of Antarctica, researchers are concerned that growing volumes of surface meltwater could cause more hydrofracturing events, thus elevating sea levels above current projections.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) is endemic in some areas of Chad. Sporadic cases of leishmaniasis have been reported in Chad since 2018. Since 1 January 2018 to 31 May 2021, a total 122 cases of VL and six fatalities have been reported by three provinces.
