Gold mining in northern Nigeria has contaminated the environment with lead. An outbreak of lead poisoning in 2010 claimed at least 160 children with many others going blind or deaf. Authorities have closed their eyes to the problem and the lead poisoning continues to seriously affect the residents in the area with more than 4 000 children sickened.
