Wildfires in Australia
Australia was bracing on Monday for days of "catastrophic" fire and heatwave conditions, with fires already burning in five states: 90 fires in the most populous state New South Wales, and in mountain forests around the national capital Canberra.
A total fire ban will be in place across NSW on Tuesday as the state experiences severe, extreme and catastrophic fire conditions. Temperatures in the state's far west are predicted to hit 45 degrees, while in Sydney the mercury is forecast to climb to 43 degrees - the third highest temperature on record. Those living in Shoalhaven, the Illawarra and the southern ranges were urged to be prepared for immediate evacuation.
Authorities conducting a search for people missing after devastating wildfires in the island state of Tasmania, reported that most of those feared missing in the Tasmanian wildfires had been accounted for.
