Methanol Poisoning – Costa Rica

The Health Surveillance Unit of the Ministry of Health reports 72 suspected cases of methanol poisoning, 35 of which have died. The deaths are of 31 men and four women with an age range of 23 to 75 years, of which 20 are from San José, three from Alajuela, five from Cartago, one in Heredia, two in Puntarenas and four are under investigation. .

To date, a total of 522 establishments have been inspected in follow-up to the investigations of possible beverages adulterated with methanol. In total, 16,339 products have been seized, 12,398 containers have been retained and a total of 664 containers of alcoholic beverages sampled.
