Brazil - Very heavy rainfall has affected several states in south-eastern Brazil since late November 2022. Two people have died and 30 are thought to be missing after a massive landslide buried a highway in ParanĂ state. The neighbouring state of Santa Catarina has declared a state of emergency after more than 1,000 people were displaced by floods and landslides following days of heavy rain. Two people have died and 1 was reported missing.
Angola - Heavy rain, floods and landslides have caused damage and fatalities in 3 provinces of Angola over the last few days. Flooding and landslides struck areas of the province of Luanda in Angola from 25 November 2022. On 26 November Angola’s National Civil Protection and Fire Service reported 2 young people died and one person was seriously injured as a result. The flooding and rains also caused material damages. As many as 238 houses and buildings were flooded and 5 completely destroyed, displacing 245 families. A total of 1,215 people were affected. The worst affected areas were the municipalities of Cazenga, Viana and Cacuaco. Some landslides were also reported in the area.
DR Congo - More heavy rainfall in eastern parts of Democratic Republic of the Congo has triggered yet another deadly landslide. At least 57 people have now died as a result of landslides in the region since mid-November. The landslide occurred Kalehe Territory in South Kivu Province. Local media, quoting local officials, said at least 9 people had lost their lives and a further 20 were injured. Heavy rain late on 29 November 2022 caused several rivers and streams to break their banks, which in turn triggered a landslide in the village of Murambi. As many as 50 houses are thought to have been destroyed, leaving dozens homeless.
