A major earthquake of magnitude 7.8 struck central Turkey and northwest Syria on Monday, killing more than 500 people and injuring hundreds as buildings collapsed across the region, triggering searches for survivors in the rubble. Initial reports indicate more than 4 000 people have been injured.

The quake, which hit in the early darkness of a winter morning, was also felt in Cyprus and Lebanon. Numerous building collapsed. Numerous substantial aftershocks rocked the region.

It is the most severe quake in Turkey since 1999 when a similar magnitude quake devastated Izmit and the heavily populated eastern Marmara Sea region near Istanbul, killing more than 17 000.
