Cholera - South Africa

The cholera death toll in Hammanskraal has reached 23 as of May this past weekend, according to the Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH). In addition, 77 patients were still admitted for the waterborne disease. Health officials said 229 patients have been seen at the Jubilee District Hospital since 15 May 2023. The National Department of Health reported an additional seven confirmed cases from Free State Province on 21 May 2023.

Avian Flu - Chile

Servicio Nacional de Pesca y Acuicultura reported this week that there are 13 regions with confirmed cases of Avian Influenza in marine animals, with positive cases from Arica to Biobío, in addition to Los Lagos, Magallanes and now Aysén has been added.

To date, 9,420 marine animals killed by Avian Influenza have been registered nationwide, corresponding to 8,117 sea lions, 1,245 Humboldt penguins, 25 chungungos, 20 spiny porpoises, 12 Chilean dolphins and 1 huillín. In the Aysén region, only 3 cases of sea lion strandings have been registered, one of which corresponded to a positive case for HPAI.
