Quakes Push Canary Islands Up 11cm


Multiple earthquakes over the Easter weekend around El Hierro, one of the Canary Islands, have raised some parts of the island by as much as 11 centimetres (4.3 inches). A 4.9 quake on Sunday was the most powerful in a wave of seismic activity that has swept the archipelago in the past two weeks, with many moderate quakes and 129 quakes below 1.3 magnitude through Saturday.

Volcanos

El Hierro volcano off the Canary Islands has experienced a new swarm of small quakes (10 so far) which started this morning under the centre of the island. The earthquakes are located at about 10 km depth.

Volcanos

A new earthquake swarm has started yesterday at the El Hierro undersea volcano off the Canary Islands. The number of quakes rose from an average of about 8-10 to 23 quakes. Most of them are weak and located at around 10 km depth in the western El Golfo area.

Wildfires

At least 1 000 people have been evacuated from the Canary Island of La Gromera to escape the wildfires burning on the island.

2 people have died in the wildfires raging in Alicante, Spain.

In northern California, 480 homes have been evacuated due to spreading wildfires.

A big cluster of more than 200 small earthquakes hit the Canary islands, believed to be related to building pressure in the El Hierro volcano.

Texas, USA has been hit by five small earthquakes over the past few days. No reports of damage.
