The outbreak of West Nile virus in the USA is the worst since the illness was first observed in the US in 1999. The number of confirmed cases rose by 25% last week to 1,993.
The number of deaths rose to 87, up from 65 a week ago. The death total seems unlikely to break the record of 260 set in the 2002-03 season.
