In the North Indian Ocean:

Tropical Cyclone 'Madi' is stationary in the Bay of Bengal between Chennai, India, & Trincomalee, Sri Lanka.

Madi, in the Bay of Bengal, is expected to weaken gradually and move northwards slowly for 24 hours and then recurve towards west-southwest, the India Meteorological reported. The bulletin said that, under the influence of this system, rainfall would occur at a few places over coastal Andhra Pradesh and at isolated places over coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and Andaman & Nicobar Islands during the next 48 hours.

Flooding in Libya

Flooding in Libya has claimed the lives of at least six people and damaged 400 houses.

Heavy rainfall triggered flooding in the western Libyan city of Zawiya on Saturday.

Libya has witnessed the heaviest rainfall in 40 years in the first week of December.

Altogether 10 people have died in continuous flooding in Libya since early December.

Flooding in Brazil

Floods in Northeastern Brazil have claimed the lives of at least 11 people and left six others missing, Bahia's Civil Defence emergency response agency said.

Heavy rainfall caused flooding in Lajedinho which destroyed some 70 houses and displaced around 200 people.

Brazil's northeast is facing its worst drought in a century.

Flash floods and landslides are common in much of Brazil. Illegal construction, deforestation and unregulated housing has been blamed for devastating effects of the flooding in Brazil.

Following last Friday’s major winter storm that brought heavy snows and significant icing from Texas to Maine (“Cleon”), a new winter storm dubbed “Dion” followed a similar track on Sunday. The deadly winter storm kept a tight grip on much of the United States on Monday as cold, snow and ice spread across the East Coast. As much as 5 inches (12.7 cm) of snow were forecast for Monday night into Tuesday and much of the area from Virginia to coastal New England were under winter weather advisories.
