Mozambique – Flooding has affected parts of Sofala Province after severe weather in Mozambique from 03 December 2020. Local media reported 128.4 mm of rain fell in the city of Beira, capital of Sofala Province, in a 10 hour period on 03 December. Flooding blocked roads and disrupted traffic. Local officials said a young person died in flood waters on 03 December. Homes were damaged and some families displaced, according to media reports. The severe weather also brought rough seas. Several boats were wrecked, with 2 people reported missing off the coast of Beira. Heavy rain has been reported elsewhere in the country. Also on 03 December, Quelimane in Zambezia Province recorded 185 mm of rain. A few days later, Tete city in Tete Province recorded 88 mm in 24 hours to 07 December.

Italy – Venice was under water on Tuesday as heavy rain and strong winds pushed into the lagoon city, catching the authorities off guard before they could activate the huge flood barriers that were rolled out just two months ago. The system of 78 flood gates, known as Mose, guard the entrance to the Venetian lagoon and are designed to protect the city from tides of up to 3 meters (10 ft). However, they require 48-hours notice to be activated. Weather bulletins in past days had forecast rainfall pushing sea levels up to 120 centimeters, below the 130 cm threshold at which the flood barriers are operated. The weather had suddenly worsened and water had reached a 145 cm peak as strong sirocco winds blew in from Croatia and two rivers flooded near the sea around Venice.
