At least 38 people are now known to have died in New York City alone, and others are missing. About 4.5 million people in 12 states are still without power, and chronic fuel shortages persist. The National Guard is to deliver a million meals and bottled water to New Yorkers affected by the storm.


High tides have again flooded Venice, Italy, leading Venetians and tourists to don high boots and use wooden walkways to cross St. Mark's Square and other areas under water.


Torrential rains from Tropical Cyclone Nilam have left vast stretches of croplands in Chittoor, Nellore, Prakasam, Guntur and East Godavari districts, Southern India under water and claimed the lives of six people.

Hurricane Sandy is threatening 60 million Americans in the eastern third of the US with havoc from high winds, drenching rains, extreme tides, storm surges and flooding as the East Coast battens down from Virginia and Massachusetts, including Delaware, New Jersey, the New York City area, Connecticut and Rhode Island.

Hurricane Sandy kills 29 people on its path through the Caribbean and now targets the US east coast. A tropical storm watch for both the South Carolina and North Carolina coasts has been issued. A hazardous weather outlook warning has been issued for Connecticut. Central Florida is also on alert.


The floods in Chad continue to take a severe humanitarian toll. The number of flood-affected people in Chad has risen to 700,000, up from 445,000 in September while aid agencies estimate the loss or damage of 255,720 hectares of cropland, 94,211 houses and 1,015 schools. Some 70,000 people have been displaced by the flooding.

Storms and Floods

Hurricane Sandy is forecast to hit just south of New England. Sandy will continue to parallel the US East Coast and will affect the Bahamas as a strong hurricane. Florida and southern Georgia, further away, will feel tropical storm force strength wind from the storm.


Tropical Storm Son-Tinh is forecast to strike China as a typhoon on 27 October and to make landfall along the northern coast of Vietnam, just south of Hanoi early Sunday.
