New Legionnaires’ Disease Outbreak in New York

New York City health officials are investigating seven cases of Legionnaires’ disease in the Bronx, about two months after an outbreak of the same type of pneumonia killed 12 people in the borough and sickened more than 100.

The new cluster is associated with the Morris Park section of the Bronx, and is unrelated to the earlier outbreak, which was centred in the South Bronx, city officials said Monday.

Between 28 and 29 July 2015, the National IHR Focal Point for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia notified WHO of 2 additional cases of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infection.

Legionnaires Disease Outbreak - New York

Eight people in New York City have died and 86 have been infected in an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease. The illness can cause high fevers and pneumonia.

But despite the current outbreak, most people in the region aren't at any increased risk of getting Legionnaires'. The disease is not communicable between people, and only those with weakened immune systems or other health impairments tend to fall ill. In addition, most people who do get Legionnaires' can be treated with antibiotics.

Between 16 and 25 July 2015, the National IHR Focal Point for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia notified WHO of 8 additional cases of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infection, including 1 death.

Legionnaires' Disease Outbreak Reported in South Bronx, NY

The New York City Health Department is investigating an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in the South Bronx. Thirty-one cases have been reported since July 10, including two possible deaths. The Health Department is also testing water from cooling towers and other potential sources in the area to determine the source of the outbreak.

New Yorkers with respiratory symptoms, such as fever, cough, chills and muscle aches, are advised to promptly seek medical attention.

Tropical storm wreaks havoc over Dominica


A violent storm moving across the Caribbean island of Dominica on Friday has resulted in casualties as mudslides have destroyed roads and rivers have run amok. The severe rainfall has caused landslides in the localities of Bagatelle, Petite Savanne, Delices, Portsmouth and Capuchin. The storm and heavy rainfall are a result of a low pressure trough system moving across the region.

Floods force evacuations in New Zealand. The wet weather has already caused flooding in parts of the Bay of Plenty. Dozens of people were evacuated from Waihi Beach yesterday after flooding in the area.


Sweden's weather agency has warned that the floods that caused severe disruptions in and around Uppsala on Friday will intensify, and weather warnings were issued for the north and south of the country as well.


The US National Weather Service in Binghamton, New York has confirmed that a tornado touched down near Bainbridge in Chenango county of south-central New York on Friday evening.

Winter storm Athena hits New York and New Jersey where residents have been warned to evacuate their homes for the second time. 650 000 buildings remain without power one week after Hurricane Sandy struck, killing 106 people. 1 200 flights have been cancelled as Athena bring heavy snowfalls to already flooded areas. Utility companies are warning of further power outages. [This is the first 'named' winter storm since the Weather Channel decided to start naming powerful winter storms the same way tropical summer storms are named.]

The US death toll from Sandy stands at 98 as swathes of the East Coast battle to recover, three days after being battered by the massive storm. The death toll from Sandy is continuing to rise, as swathes of the US East Coast battle to recover from the massive storm that hit three days ago. At least 38 people are now known to have died in New York City alone, and others are missing. About 4.5 million people in 12 states are still without power, and chronic fuel shortages persist. The National Guard is to deliver a million meals and bottled water to New Yorkers affected by the storm.


High tides have again flooded Venice, Italy, leading Venetians and tourists to don high boots and use wooden walkways to cross St. Mark's Square and other areas under water.


Torrential rains from Tropical Cyclone Nilam have left vast stretches of croplands in Chittoor, Nellore, Prakasam, Guntur and East Godavari districts, Southern India under water and claimed the lives of six people.

Heavy rains flood Argentina's capital. Nearly 5 inches (130 millimeters) of rain fell in just a few hours Monday morning, causing power outages, flooding subways and train lines and turning streets into rivers.
