Tropical Cyclone Rusty

Rusty made landfall in Pardoo town in Western Australia.

A red alert has been issued by Australia's Department of Fire and Emergency Services for Pardoo and nearby Whim Creek. Similarly a blue alert is in effect between Nullagine and Newman.

Three main iron ore ports (including Rio Tinto and Fortescue Metals) in the Pilbara region (also the world's largest source of iron ore) were closed, but Port Hedland has escaped the brunt of the cyclone.

Tropical cyclone Rusty is forecast to bring rain to most parts of the Goldfields from today.

Rusty is the third tropical cyclone in Western Australia this season.

A tornado between Harbour Island and Davis Island in Tampa, Florida has damaged vehicles and roofs of several houses.

Recent floods in Agusan del Sur have killed one and affected 49,000 persons.

Floods across Veruela, San Luis, Sta. Josefa, La Paz, Prosperidad and Loreto have also destroyed agricultural croplands.

Floods in Athens, Greece

Floods in Athens have killed one. A 23-year-old has been found dead on a flooded road on the border of Halandri and Maroussi.

The rivers of Ilissos and Pivrodafni broke their banks. Flood water in Chalandri washed away several vehicles.

Heavy rain has flooded the Athens-Corinth national highway at the Skaramanga junction and parts of Piraeus, Drapetsona and Kalamaki.

Power outages were also caused in several districts of Attica.

It is believed to be one of the worst thunderstorm disaster since 1961. Weather in the greater Athens area is expected to improve in the afternoon.

Flooding in Catania in Sicily, Italy has injured one person.

About 4 inches of rainfall is forecast in parts of north Georgia and all of central Georgia today.

Haruna has killed one person in Madagascar and is currently moving towards the southeast of the country at 10 km/hr. It is expected to leave Madagascar on Saturday.

Flooding in New South Wales, Australia has killed two people.

Evacuation order has been issued for the people of Kempsey as the Macleay River rose above normal. Kempsey's central business district is expected to be flooded tonight (Saturday).

Evacuation order has also been issued for low-lying parts of Port Macquarie including around Grafton and Bellingen, as well as parts of Lismore.

The Pacific Highway is closed near Macksville and at South Grafton.

Torrential rainfall has caused flooding in Byron, New South Wales region of Australia.

Flooding and landslips closed several roads including Mullumbimby Road.

A cyclone watch has been issued for the people between Cape Leveque to Dampier in the Kimberley and Pilbara regions of Australia.

Tornado has blown roofs of several houses in Clayton, Concordia Parish of Louisiana, USA. The tornado did not cause any injuries.

The ice storms in Arkansas, USA have caused power outage in Independence, Baxter, Carroll, Pope and Stone counties. The Midwest Snowstorm has killed two people. Some 320 flights have been canceled in St. Louis.

The US National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii.

Landslide in Mt. Diwalwal in Monkayo, Compostela Valley, Philippines has killed one person.

The rain-triggered landslide also injured six others.

Avalanche in Revelstoke Mountain Resort, Canada

Avalanche in Revelstoke Mountain Resort in southeastern British Columbia has killed one and injured three others.

The Canadian Avalanche Center has upgraded the avalanche risk to "high" for most of British Columbia.

Overall, the floods have affected around 11,346 people, especially in three districts of Rubavu, Musanze and Nyabihu, with several other marshland areas in the suburb areas of Kigali City. It is feared the floods could affect food security.

Wild Weather Causes Damage in North South Wales

Roofs have come off homes and businesses as severe weather hits northern NSW.

More than 20,000 homes between Ocean Shores and Port Macquarie have lost power as a result of the storms, Essential Energy said in a statement.

Winds up to 130km/h have been recorded along the coast.

The worst hit areas are on the coast around Ballina and Byron Bay, Yamba and Maclean, and Coffs Harbour.

U.S. Midwest Swaddled in Blanket of Snow

Powdery snow bombarded much of the nation's midsection Thursday, leaving as much as 17 inches in some places, shutting down airports, schools and state legislatures. 30 million people are in the path of the winter storm.

Near white out conditions, thunder snow and strong winds swept into the Midwest, bringing transportation to a halt in several states.

Floods Displace Thousands in the Philippines

Close to 4,000 families moved to higher grounds after the Rio Grande de Mindanao overflowed due to continuous rains.

Worst hit by floods riverside barangays in the adjoining towns of Kabacan in North Cotabato, and Montawal and Pagalungan towns in Maguindanao. Seven of the 11 flooded areas -- Bulit, Pagagawan, Kayaga, Limbalod, Maridagao, Tunggol, and Talitay -- have become ghost villages as a result of the massive evacuation of villagers.

Tropical Storm Crising forms in the Pacific approximately 115 nm south-southwestward of Puerto Princesa, in the Philippines.

A flash flood caused by heavy downpour since Monday night due to tropical storm Crising left one dead in the town of New Bataan in Compostela Valley province. The flood waters in five villages are knee-deep and the lone fatality came from the village of Andap. A landslide in the village of Mambing destroyed 33 houses and roads.

Landslide in Yunnan, China destroyed 35 houses completely.

The landslide also damaged 928 houses in Zhenxiong county. The landslide displaced 712 people in Zhongtun township. However no fatality was reported.

At least 7 people injured in Mbanza Congo floods.

The floods in Northern Zaire Province of Congo also made 1,386 families homeless. More than 200 houses have been flooded.

Flooding in Zamboanga del Norte, Philippines has affected nearly 10,000 people.

The evacuated people have been living in nearby schools or moved to higher ground.

Floods have also affected people of Dipolog City, Polanco and Katipunan.

Tropical Cyclone Felleng

As of 12:00 UTC, TC Felleng was located 275 nm west of La Reunion.

Tropical Cyclone Felleng caused heavy rainfall in Madagascar, Reunion and Mauritius. In Madagascar five people were killed yesterday.

Floods displaced more than 700 people in Antananarivo.

One killed and more than 8,000 people displaced due to flooding in Davao del Norte.

Floods also damaged houses in Magatos village, in Asuncion.

At least 12 villages close to Davao river are submerged in flood.

Cold front triggered flash floods in Davao areas. It is forecast to bring light to moderate rains over Mindanao.

The start of the monsoon had most Top Enders relieved as temperatures dropped yesterday. But with the monsoon came some severe weather and an upgraded cyclone warning, with the expectation of floods.

Tropical Cyclone Narelle

Tropical Cyclone Narelle (which is now a Category 4) is estimated to be 505 kilometres north of Exmouth and 505 kilometres northwest of Karratha and moving southwest at 12 kilometres per hour.

A Cyclone WARNING continues for coastal areas from Roebourne to Coral Bay, including Karratha, Dampier, Onslow and Exmouth.

A Cyclone WATCH continues for coastal areas from Coral Bay to Carnarvon.

Cold wave in Nepal

Cold wave in Nepal has killed so far 60 people this winter season.

Most of the victims are from the Terai districts of Nepal. Seven people died of cold in Bara and Rautahat districts yesterday night (Thursday).

Six were killed in Kailali and Kanchanpur districts and two others were killed in Jhapa yesterday only.

Strong winds also destroyed 13 houses at Khunde in Ward No. 4 and 5 of Khumjung VDC in Solukhumbu (gateway to Mount Everest).

Injured people are having treatment in local Khunde Hospital.

Avalanche in Kazbegi mountain, Georgia

Three Russian climbers reported to be killed in an avalanche disaster in Kazbegi mountains in Georgia.

A child who came along with the group was rescued and sent to hospital with frostbite.

Tornado in Batam, Indonesia

Tornado in Riau Islands city of Batam injured 200 people.

Tornado seriously injured a 10-year-old boy.

Tornado in Batam also destroyed two mosques, a government office and a gas station.

Flooding in South Island, New Zealand

Heavy rainfall caused flooding and closed roads in the South Island of New Zealand.

State Highways 94 from Lumsden to Te Anau and State Highway 73 from Cass to Arthurs Pass were closed because of flooding, washouts and slips.

Heavy storm also caused damage in Fiordland.

Flooding caused by a low pressure area (LPA) affected 3,000 people in Mindanao.

The flood affected persons are from Davao and Soccsksargen.

Butuan City is currently on Flood Alert Level 1 after a rise of two meters above sea level in Agusan river.

Tornado in Kaikoura, New Zealand

A tornado in Beach Rd, Kaikoura damaged several houses.

Twister cut power to around 250 Kaikoura homes.

China Landslide

A landslide has swept through a village in the steep, snow-dusted mountains of southern China, burying dozens of people and killing at least 16.

The landslide smothered 16 homes shortly after 8 am local time on Friday in Zhaojiagou village, and hours later more than 40 people were missing. The village is located in Zhenxiong county.

Severe weather across Mississippi and Louisiana

A statewide emergency was declared after storms rolled across Louisiana.

At least three tornadoes touched down in Louisiana Thursday morning: one near New Iberia, another in Breaux Bridge and a third near Plaquemine.

An industrial plant south of Plaquemine was damaged by a tornado.

Several mudslides reported at Natchez streets.

Floods affected Gentry High School in Indianola. Students were shifted when the classroom flooded.

There was also localized street flooding in parts of Vicksburg. Two people were rescued.

Downed trees were reported along the Natchez Trace and Mississippi Highway 547 near Port Gibson.

At least 130 families have been evacuated in two villages in Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte due to floods caused by incessant rain spawned by tropical depression "Auring,".

Tropical storm Sonamu is forecast to strike the Philippines at about 00:00 GMT on 4 January.

Tropical Cyclone Dumile causes Havoc on Reunion

Thousands of homes on France's Reunion island remain without power after being hit by Indian Ocean Cyclone Dumile. Both of the island's airports closed, and shipping was at a standstill. Winds of up to 180 kilometres per hour (110 miles per hour) and torrential rain caused extensive damage.

Heavy rainfall has again flooded Sungai Golok, Waeng and Tak Bai region of Narathiwat province.

Thailand's meteorological centre has warned people to remain ashore over the next 1-2 days due to high waves offshore, of up to 2-3 metres.

Bodies of five victims have been discovered. At least 20 people are still expected to be buried under the debris. Seven people were injured and a number of vehicles buried in mud.

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for most of eastern Massachusetts.

One person reported to be killed in rainstorm in Vathylakos of Karditsa in central Greece.

Due to overflow of Sperchios river, over 4 million square meters have flooded near Lamia, in central Greece.

Around 200 roma people are living in evacuation center.

A river has also overflown at Kalamos, north of Athens.

A state of calamity has been declared in 11 towns of Capiz, in the Philippines that suffered from flooding due to Typhoon Quinta.

Calamity declared towns are Panay, Pontevedra, Panitan, Maayon, Sigma, Mambusao, Dumarao, Dumalag, Tapaz, Cuartero and Dao.

-More than 10,8000 people displaced due to flood in the east coast of peninsular Malaysia. Recent floods have affected Terengganu, Kelantan and Pahang areas of Malaysia.

-The Kelantan River at the Guillemard Bridge in Tanah Merah, Golok River in Jenob, Tanah Merah and in Rantau Panjang are running above the danger level.

-A total 52 flood relief centres were now open all over Terengganu.

-Flood in Kuantan is expected to be worst since 1971.

 

Winter Storm in USA brings White Christmas - and Tornadoes

-A major winter storm system swept through the southern United States on Tuesday, bringing widespread snowfalls across the Midwest, spawning tornadoes in several states and killing two people in weather-related road accidents.

-A tornado struck Mobile, Alabama, home to about 200,000 people, at about 5 p.m. local time (2300 GMT). There were reports of damage to trees and widespread power outages, along with some structural damage, but no injuries or fatalities.

-Tornadoes also touched down in Mississippi, Texas and Louisiana, flattening houses and causing some injuries, according to the NWS.

-People of Dhanusha, Mahottari and other eastern Terai districts of Nepal has been badly affected due to low temperature.

-So far 7 people have died due to bitter cold wave in the district this month.

-A State of natural disaster has been declared in the Northern and Western divisions of Fiji.

-Heavy storm and floods hit western parts of Viti Levu.

Flooding and landslide in Sri Lanka

-Flash floods and landslides have killed at least nine people and left thousands homeless in Sri Lanka.

-Three people died when a tree collapsed on a van and other six were buried in landslides. Eight people had died in Matale and one is Kandy in central Sri Lanka.

-Around 4,000 displaced people are living in 17 relief camps.

-Landslides also blocked roads from Laggala to Wilgamuwa, Raththota to Illukumbura and Matale to Galewela.

-Sluice gates of Kalawewa and Rajangana tanks (reservoirs) have been opened.

-A landslide danger zone has been declared in several districts of the central hill province.

-High winds and high tide flooded the seawalls in West Vancouver and Stanley Park.

-Tornado destroyed homes in the Laurel Bay military housing community in northern Beaufort.

Two weeks after Typhoon Bopha hit the southern Philippines, killing more than 1,000 people, almost a million survivors are living outside evacuation centres and need urgent assistance, especially shelter, according to aid agencies. The most intense storm to hit the disaster-prone Philippines this year struck Mindanao island, flooding farming and mining towns and burying many people in mudslides. On the eastern coast of Mindanao, where the typhoon hit first and the hardest, even many evacuation centres were not spared and collapsed during the storm. According to the United Nations' latest report on the disaster, about 26,000 people are in 63 evacuation centres while 960,000 others are living in the ruins of their homes, open areas or with host communities.

-Villagers in Vaturova have been evacuated after heavy rain flooded their village last night.

Typhoon Bopha's death toll has now reached 1,020. With nearly 850 people still missing, the toll is likely to rise further. The storm struck the Philippines on 4 December, with the southern island of Mindanao worst affected. Many of those still unaccounted for are fishermen who went to sea before the storm hit. The storm displaced hundreds of thousands of people and caused severe damage to property and infrastructure. A large relief operation continues. More than 27,000 people remain in evacuation centres, with many more sheltering at the homes of friends and family.

Floods that hit North Barito district in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia since Dec 3 have inundated 8,872 homes in between two and four metres of water.

Typhoon Bopha Heads to China, Vietnam as Philippine Death Toll Rises to above 500 with more than 300 000 people crammed into evacuation centres as almost 16 000 homes were damaged or destroyed.

A heavy storm hit Buenos Aires, Argentina, flooding several neighbourhoods. Núñez and Belgrano are two of the most affected areas, with levels of water rapidly increasing along Libertador avenue where cars floated away with the floodwaters. Several subway lines were closed.

-A total of 145 flights to and from Mindanao and the central islands are grounded due to impact of Philippines Typhoon Bopha.

-More than 41,000 people are living in 1,000 government shelters across Mindanao by early Today (Tuesday).

-At least four provinces in the southeast - Davao, Surigao, Agusan and Compostela Valley - are without power.

-Typhoon Pablo has headed for the Sulu Sea late Tuesday afternoon and predicted to hit the central tourist islands of Bohol, Cebu and Negros.

-Several passenger ships departing from the port city of Dalian suspended due to heavy snowstorm in NorthEast China.

-More than 11,000 passenger buses were suspended and also caused temporary shut down of Xiantao International Airport.

-One killed in flooding in western Turkey. Heavy rainfall caused flooding in western provinces of Balıkesir, Canakkale and Bursa.

-Several houses and shops destroyed in Balıkesir's Edremit and Burhaniye districts.

-The Canakkale-Izmir highway and the road between Gomec and Ayvalık closed because of flooding.

-Forecasters had issued flood warnings for the Napa and Russian rivers, as well as the Truckee River, near Lake Tahoe, but by Sunday afternoon the warning for the Russian River was cancelled.

-It is the third powerful storm to hit Northern California within a week. -In Southern California, high surf was predicted in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties.

-Following National Weather Service, up to 5 more inches of rain could fall across Northern California (north of Redding and across the Sierra Nevada).

Thousands of people have been evacuated in the Philippines ahead of the powerful typhoon Bopha expected to hit the island nation on 4 December.

A powerful cyclone caused disruption in air traffic between Kamchatka peninsula in Russia's Far East and the rest of the country. The air traffic was expected to be interrupted until Monday. This is the seventh cyclone that hit the peninsula in the last four weeks. Heavy snowfall also caused disruption in road traffic and short-time breaks in electricity supply. The risk of avalanches in mountainous regions has been raised also.

-More than 120,000 lightning strikes were recorded across the state.

-Around 28 people evacuated due to flooding in the city of Carrara.

-The rail line between the cities of Pisa and Genoa, and the Aurelia highway near Carrara temporary closed.

-Heavy snowfall reported in Colle della Maddalena and Colle del Tenda passes in the mountains between Italy and France.
