Storms and Floods

Tropical Cyclone Imelda, which has strengthened significantly east of northern Madagascar, was forecast to veer southward later in the week towards La Reunion, Rodriguez Island and Mauritius.


Tropical Cyclone Victoria forms off Western Australia


The storm system has strengthened into a massive Category three cyclone in the Indian Ocean, off Western Australia's North-West coast. Tropical Cyclone Victoria, a large system which is about 400km south-west of Christmas Island, is moving south and gathering strength.


Snowstorm Hits Denver, USA


A spring snowstorm hit Colorado on Tuesday, cancelling flights and closing schools as forecasters warned residents in the middle of the United States to brace for sleet, gusty winds, flash floods and tornadoes.

Floods in Ecuador


At least eight people have been died in recent flooding in Ecuador. The floods occurred in Guayas, a southwestern state of Ecuador.

Snowstorm in Japan


Heavy snow that fell in northern Japan over the weekend has killed eight people on Hokkaido island.


A woman and her three children died after their car stucked in snow. Two others were buried in Nakashibetsu and Yubetsu region


Avalanche in East Siberia, Russia


At least six teenage boys are reported to be missing in an avalanche in east Siberia, Russia.


The disaster occurred near Mugur-Aksy village close to the Mongolian border.


Dozens of rescue workers and a helicopter are still searching for the missing boys.


More Floods NSW, Australia


More heavy rainfall across northern NSW has again flooded many parts of the region's coastal river valleys, with flood warnings still in place. Beef and dairy cattle farms in the Manning Valley are covered with floodwater.

Snowstorm in Shiojiri city, Japan


-Heavy snow in Shiojiri city (Kanto-Koshin region) of Japan killed one and injured 900 others.


-Storm caused eight centimeters of snow in nine hours in Tokyo. It is the heaviest snowfall in Tokyo since January 2006.


-Around 13 centimeters of snow was accumulated in Yokohama while 30 centimeters was seen in the mountainous areas around Tokyo.


-All domestic flights of Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines were cancelled.

Flooding in East Jakarta, Indonesia


-Train services between Bogor and Jatinegara, East Jakarta was closed due to floods.


-Floodwaters also inundated the Kampung Badan station on the border between North Jakarta and Central Jakarta.


Flash floods in Nelson, New Zealand


-Flash floods in Nelson, Southland, New Zealand washed away two vans of tourists. However tourists escaped the flood.


-Nelson received about 100mm of rain. Maitai valley road at Sharlands Creek was closed because of flood waters.


-Heavy rain in Christchurch also caused surface flooding around the Avon River in New Brighton.


Tornado in Blackall, Australia


-A tornado touched down in Blackall, State of Queensland, Australia.


-Storm also damaged 15 houses in Jundah.


Heavy snow fall in Netherlands


-Heavy snow in Netherlands caused traffic jam of more than 1,000 kilometers.


-It is regarded as the longest ever traffic jams in Netherlands because of snow.


-Several flights were canceled at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport of Netherland.

Landslide in Colombia


Bodies of five victims have been discovered. At least 20 people are still expected to be buried under the debris. Seven people were injured and a number of vehicles buried in mud.


Landslide occurred road between the cities of Neiva and San Vicente del Caguán to the south-west of the capital of Colombia.

Snowstorm in Boston, United States


Snow emergency declared in parts of Massachusetts, Boston.


A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for most of eastern Massachusetts.


Flooding in central Greece


One person reported to be killed in rainstorm in Vathylakos of Karditsa in central Greece.


Due to overflow of Sperchios river, over 4 million square meters have flooded near Lamia, in central Greece.


Around 200 roma people are living in evacuation center.


A river has also overflown at Kalamos, north of Athens.


A state of calamity has been declared in 11 towns of Capiz, in the Philippines that suffered from flooding due to Typhoon Quinta.


Calamity declared towns are Panay, Pontevedra, Panitan, Maayon, Sigma, Mambusao, Dumarao, Dumalag, Tapaz, Cuartero and Dao.

Storms and Floods

Tropical storm Bopha is forecast to strike the Philippines as a typhoon on 4 December. It is likely to make landfall over the Visayas or Mindanao.


Moscow, Russia is blanketed by a record-breaking snowfall. A large, early snowstorm raging in Moscow disrupted flights and created havoc on the roads on Thursday.


Renewed flooding of the Niger river threatens Niger's capital Niamey and parts of the west of the country,


Landslide in Norte de Santander, Colombia


-Ten missing and 50 others are trapped in a huge landslide in the northeastern Colombian province of Norte de Santander.


-Heavy rainfall caused avalanche in the hamlet of Teorama.


-Search efforts are currently suspended due to poor visibility. The landslide disaster area can only be reached by air.


Flooding in Carrara, Italy


-Around 28 people evacuated due to flooding in the city of Carrara.


-The rail line between the cities of Pisa and Genoa, and the Aurelia highway near Carrara temporary closed.


-Heavy snowfall reported in Colle della Maddalena and Colle del Tenda passes in the mountains between Italy and France.

An early fall snowstorm plunged residents of northern Minnesota, USA into winter-like conditions on Thursday, slowing travel and causing power outages while also smothering the wildfires burning in the northwest.
