Odessa, Ukraine - A heavy snowstorm in Ukraine's port city of Odessa has claimed the lives of two people who were sleeping on the streets. Severe weather conditions have caused cancellations of flights and closed the port.

France - An avalanche in Savoie, eastern France has claimed the lives of five soldiers on Monday afternoon. Eleven soldiers were caught up in the avalanche. Six soldiers were saved by rescuers. The soldiers were skiing in the Petit Argentier area at a height of 2,200m when they were caught up in the avalanche shortly before 13:00 GMT.

Subtropical Storm Alex is located about 560 mi...905 km SSW of the Azores with maximum sustained winds...70 mph...110 km/h. Present movement...NNE or 20 degrees at 18 mph...30 km/h.

Alex is just the fourth Atlantic named storm to form in January since record keeping began in 1851.

France - The avalanche on Wednesday claimed the lives of two teenage pupils and a Ukrainian man in the French Alps. 17 other school children were saved after a mammoth rescue effort.

Australia - A severe storm in Sydney has claimed the life of at least one person and injured another on Thursday afternoon. The fierce winds, rain and hail struck Sydney causing delays and diversions at Sydney Airport.

Mozambique - Flooding triggered by heavy rainfall has claimed the lives of at least three people in Pemba in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, Mozambique. In Natite, several buildings are underwater due to flash floods.

Montana, USA - An avalanche in southern Montana has claimed life of a snowmobiler. Two of the snowmobilers from North Dakota managed to dig themselves from the slide north of Cooke City on the Montana-Wyoming line. According to the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Centre (GNFAC), the avalanche occurred on the SE face of Sheep Mountain between Lulu Pass and Round Lake.

Floods in Norway

Hundreds of people have been evacuated from their homes in parts of Norway because of flooding caused by heavy rainfall aggravated by the spring melting of snow in the mountains, Norwegian media reported on Thursday.

Some 50 roads were also shut and two railway lines were closed because of the flooding and landslides.

Southeastern Norway has experienced several days of heavy rains.

A Tornado in South Cotabato, in the Philippines has destroyed eight houses affecting 33 families.

Flooding in Nawalparasi, Nepal

Floods swept away a road at Lokaha of Nawalparasi district. The Mahendra Highway, the national highway has been closed in this section.

Avalanche in Nepal

At least five mountaineers have been killed in an avalanche while returning from the peak of Mt Kanchenjunga in Nepal. Rescue helicopters have failed to locate them due to bad weather. Kangchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the world located in Nepal.

China colliery flood kills 9

At least nine miners are dead and one reported missing in coal mine flooding in Zhangqiu in Shandong Province of China. The coal mine flood occurred on May 23, 2013 but local authorities confirmed the news today. Colliery owner and others involved in the accident have been taken in custody. Chinese coal mines are notoriously unsafe.

Washington Bridge Collapses

An interstate highway bridge over the Skagit River in Washington State collapsed Thursday evening (May 23), injuring three.

The bridge, located about 60 miles (nearly 100 kilometers) north of Seattle on I-5, collapsed after being struck by an 18-wheel truck carrying a drill rig, various news sources reported.

The bridge, which was built in 1955, was rated as functionally obsolete — basically old — and fracture critical. That designation means there was no redundancy built into the structure of the bridge, so that if any structural component was damaged, the bridge could not support itself. About 18,000 bridges in the United States are designated as functionally obsolete.

Tropical Cyclone Mahasen - After Effects

Cyclone Mahasen has spared Bangladesh from the worst extent of deaths and damage although it left 48 killed in its wake. This time there was early warning and most of the deaths occurred as victims ignored do's and don'ts issued by local authorities. More than 49,000 thatched houses were destroyed.

Indonesia - Monsoon set to break over Andamans under 'Mahasen' effect. The onset of the rains is expected to be normal this year, with raging cyclone Mahasen having played a big role facilitating it. The cyclone has churned up the seas and is trailed by strong band of southwesterly flows from South of the Equator.

Kathmandu - Cyclone Mahasen brings rain in Himalayas. It seems the Mahasen Cyclone in the Bay of Bengal has had a slight affect in the weather pattern of the Kathmandu Valley as the temperature has remained below normal for the past few days.

Avalanche on Mount Saipal, Nepal

At least seven people are reported to be missing in an avalanche in the Mount Saipal region of far-western Nepal. The avalanche hit a yarsagumba collectors group of nine people on Mt Saipal. Two people survived and reported the tragedy to locals at Kanda VDC.

Landslide in the Democratic Republic Congo

At least 47 people are missing following a landslide in in Rubaya in North Kivu province of Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo). A rescue team has been working in the landslide zone but no survivors or bodies have been found.

Guangdong Hit as Deadly Floods Sweep Southern China - Update.

Flooding and landslides across nine southern Chinese provinces have killed more than 50 people and left 14 missing.

Guangdong was hardest hit, reporting 36 deaths after days of heavy rain. Six people have died in Jiangxi.

And further bad weather is forecast for Guangdong, with warnings of heavy wind and rain causing more flooding in the next few days.

Teams of relief workers have been sent to oversee the recovery efforts in the hardest hit areas, officials said.

Heavy rainstorms in Guangdong reportedly caused widespread flooding in the province's mountainous areas and affected nine cities including the provincial capital, Guangzhou.

Nearly 900,000 people had been affected across the state, with floods destroying 2,675 houses.

Landslide in Zhaojiatang village, in Heshan district, Yiyang city in Hunan Province in China has claimedthe lives of two people.

Avalanche at Everest base camp

An avalanche above the second base camp of Mount Everest has killed one climber at an altitude of 7 000 meters.

Heavy rainfall caused a 25-metre high landslide which damaged several cars near the Bukit Nanas monorail station in Jalan Sultan Ismail, Malaysia.

Storms in Thailand

More than 150 houses, rice barns and mills, and animal farms in Surin were destroyed after a tropical storm hit this northeastern province Tuesday evening.

Tropical waves wreaked havoc on Thai coastal villages. The fierce tropical storm in the Gulf of Thailand stranded more than 70 fishing boats in this seaboard province ashore due to huge waves, about four metres high.

Floods continue across Kenya. 8 people reported to have died in recent floods in the North Rift.

The US National Weather Service has confirmed that at least 21 tornadoes tore across 6 states over the southern U.S. last Wednesday and Thursday. Of the 21 tornadoes 9 were in Alabama, 4 in Missouri, 4 in Arkansas, 2 in Georgia, 1 in Mississippi, and 1 in Louisiana.

Dust storm in Chhattisgarh, India

 

Dust storm in Chhattisgarh, India has claimed the lives of at least six people. Storm injured around 25 people and damaged more than 150 houses. Train services were also affected.

Imelda continues to approach Mauritius and remains a threat to the islands.

 

Winds of 120Km/h have been recorded at Rodrigues Island. Cyclone Warning for Rodrigues is level four.

At least two people are reported to be missing in two separate avalanches in the Cascade mountains in Washington State. The avalanches occurred near the Snoqualmie Pass east of Seattle.

Violent Storm Kills Six In Argentina

Six people were killed after torrential rain and powerful winds battered Buenos Aires, knocking out power, downing trees and damaging homes. More than 155 mm (six inches) of rain fell between midnight on Monday and 7am on Tuesday. That is a record for rainfall in April in the Argentine capital.

Mudslide in Arusha, Tanzania

A mudslide in Arusha, Tanzania has claimed 13 lives. Four people are still missing. The mudslide occurred at a gravel mine in the Moshono area of northern Tanzania.

A storm which spawned a tornado in Torda, Serbia has damaged more than 100 buildings. The tornado damage is estimated in the millions of dollars.

Flash floods in Mauritius

Massive flash flooding in Mauritius has claimed eight lives. The floods have injured 82 others. Six people died in the flooding in Caudan underground tunnel.

Several accidents have been reported across Mauritius. Dozens of vehicles collided each other at Port Louis.

Lightning strikes in Uttar Pradesh, India

Lightning strikes have claimed eight lives and injured nine others. Lightning claimed three lives in Chandauli and Meerut each, two in Ghazipur and one in Sambhal.

Avalanche close to the Glencoe Ski Centre, Scotland

One person is reported to be missing in an avalanche in the Etive Glades, close to Glencoe Ski Centre.

Around 30 people including Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team are involved in the search operation.

Tornado in Hokitika, New Zealand has injured one person. The twister touched down about at 12.30am and tore off roofs from several houses including Railway Hotel Motel in Weld Street.

Waterspout in Maguindanao, Philippines

Waterspout in Liguasan River in Maguindanao region of Philippines has killed 10 people including two children when a passenger boat sank.

There were altogether 18 passengers in the boat. Six passengers managed to survive but two are still reported to be missing

Flooding in south-western France has killed at least one person and destroyed hundreds of homes. The Government has declared a state of natural catastrophe.

The Agly River burst its banks and caused flooding in Perpignan. The flood displaced around 700 people.

At least seven people have died in avalanches in the French and Austrian Alps.

Avalanche in the southern French Alps: Four climbers died in Hautes Alpes region. The area is close to Italy.

Avalanche in Tyrol Austria: Three skiers killed including a German skier near the Hoher Riffler peak in Tyrol.

Massive Winter Storm Pounds The Northern United States

The storm has grounded 2600 flights, closed hundreds of schools and made roadways and highways impassible. At least four people were killed on Tuesday in accidents on icy and snow covered roads and highways. More than a dozen states from Minnesota to Virginia were in the path of the huge storm, which had already dumped as much as 60cm of snow in Montana and 38cm in North Dakota.

Another 1162 flights scheduled for Wednesday had already been cancelled, mainly in the Washington area. The storm was expected to hit the nation's capital late Tuesday or early Wednesday, and some Congressional meetings were already being called off.

Floods swamp thousands of homes in Jakarta

More heavy rains have fallen in Jakarta causing floods upstream of Bogor Dam, swamping areas of the capital that had only just recovered from January's major flood. Nearly 6,000 homes have been affected this time, with water up to 2.5 metres deep in places.

An avalanche in the mountains near Haines, Alaska has killed a guide for a heli-ski operationone and injured two others.

Extreme Snowfalls

Japan has had a record winter for snow, and northern Japan is currently coated by unprecedented volumes of snow – more than five meters at higher altitudes, with houses turned into igloos and roads into snow tunnels. In the Hakkoda Mountains the depth of snow has been measured at 5.61 meters – a record for Japan. Even lower down, in the city of Aomori, snow is standing at almost 1.5 meters and bulldozers have to work round the clock.

This has also been a record winter for snow in parts of Russia – a couple of weeks ago snow piles of more than five meters caused gridlock in Moscow.

Switzerland has also been experiencing dramatic snowfalls, with depths of up to three meters.

These snowfalls, especially those in northern Japan, are remarkable by any standards. But they still fall well short of the all-time record-breakers. Tamarack in California claims the record for the deepest snow ever recorded: 11.5 meters on 11 March 1911. That year, Tamarack also recorded the largest snowfall in a single month in the US: almost 10 meters.

Heavy snow that fell in northern Japan over the weekend has killed eight people on Hokkaido island.

A woman and her three children died after their car stucked in snow. Two others were buried in Nakashibetsu and Yubetsu region

Avalanche in East Siberia, Russia

At least six teenage boys are reported to be missing in an avalanche in east Siberia, Russia.

The disaster occurred near Mugur-Aksy village close to the Mongolian border.

Dozens of rescue workers and a helicopter are still searching for the missing boys.

An avalanche in Chum Jabba village in Torghar district has killed three people, a woman and two girls.

The Avalanche was caused by heavy rainfall.

An emergency flood alert has been issued for parts of Dalby in southern Queensland. Dozens of homes are believed to have been flooded when Myall Creek peaked at 3.21 metres at midnight (AEST), breaking its banks at north Dalby.

A renewed round of flooding in Thailand's southern region has claimed one life, but the situation is expected to improve in the next few days.

Avalanche in Himachal Pradesh, India

Seven people have died in an avalanche in Kafnu village, Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh, India.

The avalanche also destroyed six houses. Kinnaur district has experienced continuous heavy snowfall for some days.

Relief and rescue operations are currently underway in Kafnu village of Bhaba valley.

Heavy to very heavy snowfall is forecast by Shimla Meteorological Centre during next 24 hours in the state.

Lightning has killed two people in Bajura district of Nepal.

Lightning injured two others.

Landslide in Central Java, Indonesia

Landslide in Central Java has killed one person.

The landslide occurred in Plompong village, Brebes, Central Java. 5 people are reported to be still missing.

Rescue work is being hampered due to the heavy rain.

Landslide in Phuket, Thailand has killed one and injured one other.

Hailstorms have killed one and damaged crops in 80 villages of Tikamgarh, Chhatarpur of Madhya Pradesh, India.

A landslide in Shulir village in Badakhshan province of Afghanistan has injured 20 people. The landslide also destroyed 20 houses.

Avalanche in Uttarakhand, India

Avalanche in Dehradun district of India killed two people. Both fatalities were from Lohari village going to Bagni village to celebrate Magh festival.

They were buried under 3 ft of snow near Chuirmari Dhang.

Avalanche in the Coire an t-Sneachda area of Cairngorms, Scotland injured three people.

Three mountaineers were airlifted to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.

Flooding in Mozambique

-Mozambique officials have started evacuating 55,000 people from flood disaster zones.

-The south and the centre of Mozambique have been placed under red alert.

-High water levels in the Limpopo and Inkomati rivers are predicted to flood the town of Chokwe.

-Emergency disaster preparedness teams are already in place and motorboats have been dispatched to the area to move people to safe ground.

-Floods in Mozambique and northern parts of South Africa have killed at least 20 people over the past week.

-As of 12:00 UTC, TC Oswald was located 155 nm east-northeast of Mornington Island, Australia.

-North Queensland is on flood alert as tropical cyclone Oswald dumps torrential rain on the region.

-The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has issued a blue alert and a natural disaster warning has been issued for communities between De Grey and Mardie including Port Hedland, South Hedland, Whim Creek, Roebourne, Wickham, Point Samson, Karratha and Dampier.

-A cyclone watch has also been issued for the people from Mardie to Onslow.
