Storms and Floods

Hurricane Sandy hits the US East Coast, leaving more than 7 million people without power, flooding New York subways, at least three New Jersey towns. At least 18 people dead. Half of Manhattan underwater. A record 4 metre storm surge was threatening southern Manhattan. Cars are floating down streets, subway stations and tunnels are filling with water. President Obama signs a declaration of emergency for New York and New Jersey. New York Stock Exchange closes for a second straight day. Fire in Queens destroys 50 homes. Huge devastation in Atlantic City.

Heavy rains flood Argentina's capital. Nearly 5 inches (130 millimeters) of rain fell in just a few hours Monday morning, causing power outages, flooding subways and train lines and turning streets into rivers.

Tropical Storm Son-Tinh was moving northeast along the northern Vietnamese coast on Monday after tearing the roofs off hundreds of houses and breaching flood defenses overnight and killing at least 30 people.

Tropical storm Rafael was located about 135 mi [215 km] E of Bermuda and is expected to miss the island, although strong winds and rain are expected.

Storms and Floods

Rafael strengthens into a hurricane, with a tropical storm warning issued for Bermuda. Rafael is expected to bring rain to Atlantic Canada by mid-week.


Hurricane Paul is strengthening in the Pacific off Mexico and a tropical storm watch has been issued for a portion of Baja California.


Tropical storm Maria was located about 45 nm north-west of Iwo To, Japan.


The first tornado in decades has hit Rogers, Arkansas, USA.


A small tornado hit Mayfield, Kentucky, on Sunday evening.


Flood conditions continued in Nigeria in early October 2012. The country’s National Emergency Management Agency reported that floods had killed 431 people and displaced 1.3 million more. Floods had also wiped out 152,575 hectares (377,020 acres) of farmland, and Nigerians could expect rapidly rising food prices as a result.

Tropical Storm Leslie headed on a northward track toward Canada's Newfoundland early Monday, after its outer bands buffeted Bermuda with a day of gusty winds and rain that caused little damage.On Tuesday Tropical Storm Leslie's stiff winds and heavy rains lashed Newfoundland as the storm made landfall, knocking out power in several communities, forcing the cancellation of some flights and the evacuation of some residents.

Heavy rains this year in Argentina have flooded 3.5 million hectares (8.6 million acres) of farmland outside the capital, causing millions of dollars in losses for farmers and ranchers.

Floods in Nigeria kill 137, displace thousands.


A small tornado hit an area north of Montreal on Saturday as part of a storm that left more than 90,000 homes and businesses without power.


Violent windstorm kills 4 in north-east Oklahoma, but it was no tornado.

Hurricane Leslie is expected to hit Bermuda squarely Saturday night, before heading towards Canada. Hurricane watch is in effect.

Tropical Storm Leslie moves slowly towards Bermuda.


Heavy rainfall and floods in the Senegalese capital Dakar have unearthed treasures believed to date back several thousands of years. Ancient pieces of pottery and jewellery were found strewn in the streets after a day of torrential rain on Sunday.
