Yellow Fever in Chad

The Ministry of Health of Chad is launching an emergency mass-vaccination campaign against yellow fever from 22 February 2013, following laboratory confirmation of two cases in the country in December 2012.

Storms and Floods

Hurricane Sandy kills 29 people on its path through the Caribbean and now targets the US east coast. A tropical storm watch for both the South Carolina and North Carolina coasts has been issued. A hazardous weather outlook warning has been issued for Connecticut. Central Florida is also on alert.

The floods in Chad continue to take a severe humanitarian toll. The number of flood-affected people in Chad has risen to 700,000, up from 445,000 in September while aid agencies estimate the loss or damage of 255,720 hectares of cropland, 94,211 houses and 1,015 schools. Some 70,000 people have been displaced by the flooding.

Floods displace more than 15 000 people in northern Uganda.

Tens of thousands of people have been affected by floods in central, eastern and southern Chad. Thousands of hectares of crops have been destroyed as well as hundreds of houses.

Tropical Storms Kirk and Leslie in the Atlantic are not expected to impact on land at this stage.

Tropical Storm Ileana remains far off Baja California and is also not expected to make landfall.

Drought

Severe drought affects large area across Senegal, Niger, Chad and Mali. Children close to the edge of malnutrition wail for food. Aid agencies have not declared an emergency as the level of malnutrition is only 14%, one percentage point below the threshold.
