The extent of wildfires in Western Australia is highlighted by this satellite picture taken over a period of 13 nights and comprising a composite picture made up of permanent features such as city lights and temporary phenomena such as wildfires.
What is interesting however, is the extent of the wildfire threat affecting the area over a relatively short period.

Similarly the following picture shows a nationwide look at all of the fires (wild, prescribed & ag) in the USA in 2012. Color denotes intensity, with yellow being the most instense. As of November 30th, more than 9.1 million acres have burned in the U.S. this year. That's the third highest total ever recorded.
