Wildfires

Wildfires - USA

Utah:

Crews hoped to declare a 5,200-acre wildfire in Millard County's Cove Fort area 100 percent contained by Wednesday night, but elsewhere in the state firefighters were scrambling to hem in other lightning-sparked blazes.

Oregon:

Eastern Oregon wildfires burn 40,000 acres. Firefighters in Eastern Oregon battled hot, dry conditions Tuesday as they coped with three new fires triggered by lightning.

Campers at Owyhee Dam were evacuated Monday night as a precaution.

Two other fires broke out farther south in Malheur County as lightning lit up the sky in a wide area of southeastern Oregon.

Alaska:

Firefighters remained busy Tuesday as acreage burned by wildfires across Alaska crept closer to the million-acre mark.

Growth of the Stuart Creek 2 Fire north of Eielson Air Force Base drew most of the attention in the Fairbanks area, as other nearby fires were either growing slowly or contained.

The Skinny’s Road Fire, which started June 25 north of the Parks Highway 25 miles southeast of Fairbanks, remained about 1,660 acres Tuesday evening. About 400 firefighters were working on the fire Tuesday evening. Occasional flames were still rising inside the fire boundaries.

Arizona:

The Dean Peak Fire has burned nearly seven square miles since first being reported on Saturday June 29 at 3:30 p.m. Located 10 miles southeast of Kingman, Ariz., as of Wednesday afternoon the fire had already burned through 4,400 acres of steep, rugged Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land, and is being fueled by dried brush, pinyon, juniper and ponderosa pine. Fire officials say the area is very dry.
