Somalia - Over 90,000 people in war-torn southern Somalia have been hit by weeks of severe flooding, almost half of them forced from their homes. More than 90,000 people have been affected since October 23 and an estimated 42,000 people displaced as a result of the flash floods and river flooding. Hardest hit are the southern Somali regions of Bakool, Bay, Lower Juba, Middle Juba and Middle Shabelle.

Somalia - Flash floods in Somalia have destroyed thousands of makeshift homes, as well as latrines and shallow wells, the United Nations said, predicting that up to 900,000 people could be hit by the strongest El Niño weather phenomenon in decades. The floods, which have made roads impassable and cut thousands off from aid, could reverse many of the humanitarian gains made in southern Somalia since 2011 when the Horn of Africa nation was devastated by famine. Some 3.2 million Somalis - one-third of the population - already needed life-saving aid and over one million were internally displaced before the rains began on Oct. 7.

Israel - Residents of Herzliya, Ra’anana and Kfar Saba in central Israel faced heavy floods Wednesday as a brief but intense winter storm swept the area, closing major roads and flooding whole neighbourhoods. Three days after a storm knocked out power for tens of thousands of Israeli homes, Wednesday’s downpour left some 15,000 households in the dark for the second time in less than a week.

Wild Poliovirus in Somalia

An investigation has been launched into a preliminary report of the detection of a wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) in the Banadir region of Somalia. This is the first WPV to be reported from Somalia since 25 March 2007. The virus was isolated from specimens collected on 21 April 2013 from a 32-month-old girl, who became ill due to acute flaccid paralysis on 18 April 2013, and from specimens collected from 3 of her close contacts.

WHO Press Statement Related to the Novel Coronavirus Situation

The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health in France has informed WHO of an additional laboratory-confirmed case with infection of the novel coronavirus (NCoV).

The emergence of this new coronavirus is globally recognized as an important and major challenge for all of the countries which have been affected as well as the rest of the world.

The greatest global concern, however, is about the potential for this new virus to spread. This is partly because the virus has already caused severe disease in multiple countries, although in small numbers, and has persisted in the region since 2012. Of most concern, however, is the fact that the different clusters seen in multiple countries increasingly support the hypothesis that when there is close contact this novel coronavirus can transmit from person-to-person.

Flooding in Nicosia, Cyprus

A thunderstorm caused basement flooding, trapped motorists in their cars in capital city of Cyprus Nicosia. Hailstorm and street flooding was also reported in Strovolos, Dasoupolis and Lakatamia.

Lightning in Dabel, Germany

A lightning strike in Germany has injured at least 39 people with eight in serious condition. About 500 people were at the fairground in Dabel, east of Schwerin celebrating a Father’s Day party when the lightning struck. Most of the people suffered burns and shocks.

Hailstorms have damaged over 200 houses with tin- roofed and asbestos walls in Mizoram, India. A landslide caused by heavy rainfall has also blocked roads in Kolasib town.

A tornado touched down in Bakersfield, California, USA for the first time since 1999.

Storms caused heavy rain, hail and street flooding in Temple area of Texas, USA.

Recent flash floods in Somalia have killed seven children and displaced 50,000 others, the UN says. Flash foods have also made thousands homeless in the Middle Shebelle area of southern Somalia.

Flash floods kill nine people, displace 25 000 others in western Uganda.

Flooding and landslides in Swansea and Pontypridd, Wales

-Several homes were evacuated after landslips due to flooding in a Swansea valley village and in Pontypridd.

-Flooding also disrupted train services between Cardiff Central and Bridgend, and Caersws and Machynlleth in Powys. -Lostwithiel in Cornwall and the area around Barnstaple in north Devon, England were also among the worst hit.

-People in Braunton, Umberleigh, Barnstaple and Bishops Tawton all suffered as Rivers Yeo and Caen burst their banks.

-There are currently seven flood warnings by the Environment Agency in Wales

Tropical Cyclone Four is located 420 nm east-southeast of Cape Guardafui, Somalia. This Tropical cyclone is expected to threaten portions of Somalia with heavy rain early this week.

Tropical storm Gaemi forms in the western Pacific near the Philippines and is expected to hit the central coast of Vietnam Wednesday before moving on to Thailand.

Several people have been killed and thousands displaced after heavy rains in Beletweyne in central Somalia's Hiiraan Region caused the Shabelle River to burst its banks.

More than 76,000 victims of the devastating floods in Nigeria that hit about 200 communities in five local government areas of Anambra State are being evacuated by the military from their homes to relief camps in Onitsha and Nteje.

At least 35 people have been confirmed dead following a cholera outbreak along the Kenyan-Somali border mainly in a settlement close to the border with Somalia.
