Hand, Foot, Mouth Disease in Oregon, USA

The Lane County Public Health Division in Florence, Oregon said Friday that 26 elementary to high school-age children have shown symptoms consistent with the disease.

Those symptoms include a fever, sore throat and poor appetite, accompanied by a rash appearing as small, pimply sores, typically on the hands, feet and in and around the mouth. The 26 cases all surfaced in the last two weeks.

Davis urged parents to disinfect surfaces in their houses repeatedly. Surfaces like table and countertops are breeding grounds for the type of viruses that cause the disease, especially among young children, Davis said. Doorknobs and children’s toys should also be disinfected.

KZN, South Africa - Paramedics treated eleven people who were injured during a storm in Tugela Ferry in central KwaZulu-Natal on Monday night. Medics had to use 4x4 ambulances to cross swollen rivers to get to the injured. Several dwellings in the rural area had collapsed during the heavy rainfall. Some houses had flood damage, while others, including mud houses and formal brick houses, were completely destroyed by the storm.

Oregon, USA - Monday was the wettest calendar day in recorded history in Portland, and the rain is expected to stick around for days. Nearly 2.7 inches of rain was recorded on Monday which tied a record for one day, from 12:01 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. The previous record was set on Nov. 19, 1996. More rain is forecast for Monday night, and the record was expected to be broken.

The Yakima complex fire is burning at about 6,000 acres, and Kittitas was at 3,500 on the last update. Officials are now calling in Canadian fire crews to assist with Washington and Oregon fire fighting. About 3,500 crews from both states are fighting five large fires in Washington.

The Sheep fire burning seven miles north of Riggins, Idaho, is 24 percent contained and had burned a total of 29,171 acres.
