Strong gale force winds and rain continue to pound Britain, with flood warnings in many areas.

Disease

The US Centre for Disease Control (CDC) has issued a travel advisory for Nigeria due to an ongoing lassa fever outbreak. Lassa fever is a haemorhragic fever.

Measels outbreak in Rayagada, India kills at least 9 children.

Leptospirosis outbreak in Fiji following the severe floods kills at least 20 people.

An outbreak of bovine TB in a herd of alpacas in England has led to the culling of 500 animals. The disease is thought to have been spread by badgers which urinate in the fields occupied by the alpacas.

Shark Populations Fall

A recent study in the USA has found that shark populations have plummeted in areas near humans. The Pacific Reef Shark population has fallen by more than 90%.

Drought

Florida, USA is suffering a serious drought affecting the entire state. The drought has been growing since July 2010. It is hoped that the impending hurricane season, which is expected to be mild, will break the drought.

Australia is drought free for the first time in a decade. Heavy rains and floods consequent upon the La Nina phenomenon in the Pacific helped banish drought conditions across the continent.

Tornado hits Chivington in Colorado, USA. 7 homes and farm buildings destroyed. Some injuries reported.

Popocatepetl volcano in Mexico continues to erupt spewing ash cloud. Authorities fear larger eruption may be imminent.

Shiveluch volcano on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula in eastern Siberia erupts, sending up an ash cloud to an altitude of more than 10 km.

Wildfires in Texas, USA. 2 300 acres burned in the Brooks Mountain area, with several smaller fires in Jeff Davis County.

The faster rate of shrinkage suffered by the vast Antarctic ice shelves has been found to be caused by warmer ocean water encroaching from below the ice driven by stronger westerly winds in the Southern Ocean.

The volcano on the Greek Island of Santorini, which may be responsible for the legend of Atlantis re-awakens with substantial magna movements. Scientists report an eruption is possible.

A case of mad cow disease has been identified in California, USA. There is no threat to the nation's food supply. The cow is a diary cow not destined for human consumption.
