Wildfires - California, USA

A trio of wildfires that threatened at least 100 homes on California’s Central Coast appeared to be easing Friday night. But some canyon houses remained at risk, officials said.

A half-dozen small fires that erupted along a road Friday afternoon merged into three blazes that burned 300 acres of thick manzanita, chaparral, grass and oak. Winds pushed the flames close to Lompoc neighborhoods, and about 900 people were told to evacuate.

Bangladesh - Acute Watery Diahhroea, Cholera

Red Crescent mobile clinics in Cox’s Bazar are treating an increasing number of people with acute watery diarrhoea, raising concerns about a possible outbreak of disease among the estimated 480,000 people who have fled Myanmar’s Rakhine state in recent weeks.

Red Crescent Society volunteers and staff have provided purified water to more than 30,000 people. They are also building latrines and showers to improve sanitation and safeguard the security and dignity of women and girls, but the needs outpace the delivery of services.

900 000 vaccines have been despatched to the affected areas.

UK Smog Alert

A combination of polluted air blowing in from continental Europe and toxic air around London has created unhealthful levels of air pollution around the British capital. London’s mayor ordered an emergency air quality alert due to the hazardous smog.

“The shocking and illegal state of London’s filthy air means once again I am triggering a high air pollution alert today under my new comprehensive alert system,” said Sadiq Khan.

The government has come under increased pressure to improve the United Kingdom’s air quality.

Wildlife

A Criminal Killing

Conservation groups in Germany expressed outrage when the first wild bison to be seen in the country for more than two centuries was killed after a local official ordered hunters to shoot it.

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) says it will file charges against the official, calling the killing of the animal by the river Oder near the eastern town of Lebus a criminal offense.

“After more than 250 years a wild bison had been spotted again in Germany, and all the authorities could think to do is shoot it,” said WWF board member Chris Heinrich.

It’s believed the bison wandered into Germany from a national park in neighboring Poland.

Japan’s Annual Whale Hunt Ends

Japan’s whaling fleet ended its disputed scientific whaling season in the North Pacific after killing a total of 177 of the marine mammals.

Three ships that sailed in June returned with 43 minke whales and 134 sei whales.

Japan’s Fisheries Ministry says it is trying to prove the whale population has recovered enough to allow commercial hunting.

Disease

Disfiguring Disease Outbreak

Cases of a flesh-eating bacterium that causes leprosy-like symptoms are spreading in southeastern Australia, prompting calls for more government funding to combat the outbreak.

The Buruli ulcer is typically found in parts of Africa and was named after the Ugandan village where many cases emerged in the 1960s. It was first identified in patients of Australia’s Victoria state during the 1930s.

Paul Johnson of Melbourne’s Austin Hospital told AFP that the recent outbreak appears to have emerged in possums on the Bellarine Peninsula south of Melbourne. He says humans are contracting it through direct contact with the native marsupials or through biting insects.

Plague spreading in Madagascar

In a follow-up on the plague outbreak in Madagascar, the Ministry of Public Health now reports that the plague epidemic is affecting 17 districts in the country, according to local media.

The report states that the case count is nearing 100 since August 1. Five fatalities have been reported. Both pneumonic and bubonic plague cases are being reported.

North Carolina, USA - Tropical Storm Maria is pushing high surf over North Carolina's Outer Banks, where more than 10,000 visitors were told to leave the islands while floodwaters surrounded numerous homes.

England - In 2012, the center of Lydbrook, a village skirting the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, England, was deluged with several feet of water. The flash flooding, unleashed by torrential rainfall across the region, sparked a mandatory evacuation and left badly damaged homes and businesses in its wake. Now, two years later, the Forestry Commission has decided to bring in the big guns to further prevent flooding: beavers. The idea is that once released, the clan of industrious semiaquatic rodents will get to work doing what they do best: constructing an intricate network of dams, ponds and canals that, in this instance, will slow the flow of Greathough Brook and prevent upwards of 6,000 cubic meters (1.6 million gallons) of water from rushing into the valley-bound village below. While a qualified team of engineers that don't have webbed hind feet could be brought in to dam the stream, the beaver is, well, cheaper and can get the job done in a swifter and less intrusive manner.

Antarctica - Pine Island Glacier Calves

A colossal iceberg four and a half times the size of Manhattan has broken off the Pine Island Glacier in West Antarctica, marking the second time the glacier has calved a giant iceberg in just two years, according to news reports. The satellite image shows that the glacier has lost an enormous chunk of ice.

Of all the glaciers in West Antarctica, the Pine Island Glacier is the largest contributor of ice to the ocean. Each year, it loses 45 billion tons (408 billion metric tons) of ice, causing sea levels to increase 0.03 inches (1 millimeter) every eight years, according to The Washington Post. If the entire glacier melted, sea levels could rise 1.7 feet (0.5 m), The Washington Post reported.

Wildfires - Australia

Structures have been destroyed by an out-of-control bushfire southwest of Port Macquarie, the NSW Rural Fire Service says. The blaze, which was raging in the Innes View area, west of Comboyne, blackened about 950 hectares in hot and windy conditions on Sunday afternoon. Dozens of firefighters and water-bombing aircraft attempted to get the flames under control and warned residents they would see smoke and possibly embers.

At 5pm Sunday, there were nearly 100 grass or bushfires burning across NSW and 29 were not contained.

A bushfire alert in Victoria's east has been downgraded but nearby residents need to remain vigilant about the out-of-control blaze, emergency officials say. Residents near the small East Gippsland town of Orbost had been told earlier on Monday to evacuate their homes as fire crews battled the fire east of the town. But fire conditions eased by 11am.

Malaria ‘superbug’ spreads to Vietnam

A highly drug resistant malaria “superbug” from western Cambodia is now present in southern Vietnam, leading to alarming failure rates for dihydroartemisinin (DHA)-piperaquine — Vietnam’s national first-line malaria treatment, leading malaria scientists warn.

A single mutant strain of very drug resistant malaria has now spread from western Cambodia to north-eastern Thailand, southern Laos and into southern Vietnam and caused a large increase in treatment failure of patients with malaria. The spread of this dominant artemisinin drug resistant P falciparum C580Y mutant malaria parasite lineage across the entire Mekong Sub-region is a serious threat to malaria control and eradication efforts.

Environment

CO2 Evolution

Plants have been observed changing the way they conduct photosynthesis over the past 40 years as levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide have steadily increased.

Researchers led by Scripps Institution of Oceanography found that land-based plants have adjusted to higher levels of the greenhouse gas by increasing the efficiency with which they use waterith more CO2 in the air, plants have evolved to have fewer or smaller microscopic holes that allow leaves to absorb the gas. The plants then don’t need to draw up as much water from their roots to flourish.

Global Warming

Arctic Sea Ice

The Arctic ice cap reached its eighth-lowest extent on record at the time of year the sea ice is typically at its minimum coverage.

Scientists at the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) said that the sea ice had set a record for the smallest winter extent earlier this year and was on track to rival the record minimum set in 2012.

But a cloudy and cooler-than-normal August across the central Arctic slowed the seasonal melting.

“It’s not going to be a staircase heading down to zero every year,” said Ted Scambos of the NSIDC. “[But] the Arctic will continue to evolve towards less ice. There’s no dodging that.”

Lost Islands

Rising ocean levels in the South Pacific have swallowed at least eight low-lying islands in the Solomon Islands and Micronesia, where sea levels have risen by about half an inch each year since the early 1990s.

Australian researchers conducted coastal surveys, analyzed satellite data and spoke with island residents before making the conclusion. They found six of the islands went underwater between 2007 and 2014.

Aira | Kyushu (Japan) : JMA reported that during 4-11 September there were 52 events detected at Showa Crater (at Aira Caldera’s Sakurajima volcano), seven of which were explosive and ejected material as far as 500 m. Ash plumes rose as high as 2.4 km above the crater rim. Crater incandescence was observed most nights. The Alert Level remained at 3 (on a 5-level scale).

Bezymianny | Central Kamchatka (Russia) : KVERT reported that during 8-15 September a lava flow continued to move down the W flank of Bezymianny's dome, and incandescence from the dome was visible at night. A thermal anomaly was identified in satellite images during 8-9 and 12-13 September. The Aviation colour Code remained at Orange (the second highest level on a four-colour scale).

Bogoslof | Fox Islands (USA) : AVO reported that during 13-19 September nothing significant was observed in partly to mostly cloudy satellite images of Bogoslof, and no activity was detected in seismic or infrasound data. Weakly elevated surface temperatures were identified in satellite images during 13-14 and 16-17 September, indicating ongoing unrest. On 17 September discoloured ocean water was visible in satellite data, possibly representing outflow from the crater. The Aviation colour Code remained at Orange and the Volcano Alert Level remained at Watch.

Cleveland | Chuginadak Island (USA) : AVO reported that during 13-19 September nothing significant was observed in often cloudy satellite images and web camera views of Cleveland; elevated surface temperatures were identified in satellite images during 13-15 September and minor steaming was noted during 17-19 September. Nothing noteworthy was detected in seismic or infrasound data. The Aviation colour Code remained at Orange and the Volcano Alert Level remained at Watch.

Dukono | Halmahera (Indonesia) : Based on analyses of satellite imagery, wind model data, and notices from PVMBG, the Darwin VAAC reported that during 13-16 and 18 September ash plumes from Dukono rose to altitudes of 1.8-2.1 km (6,000-7,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted SW, W, and NW.

Ebeko | Paramushir Island (Russia) : Based on observations by volcanologists in Severo-Kurilsk (Paramushir Island), about 7 km E of Ebeko, explosions during 13-14 September generated ash plumes that rose 2.2 km (7,200 ft) a.s.l. The Aviation colour Code remained at Orange (the second highest level on a four-colour scale).

Fuego | Guatemala : Based on INSIVUMEH notifications, CONRED reported that Fuego’s ninth effusive eruption phase in 2017 began on 13 September. Explosions generated ash plumes that rose 1.2 km above the crater and drifted 15 km W and SW, causing ashfall in communities downwind including San Pedro Yepocapa (8 km N), El Porvenir (8 km ENE), and Sangre de Cristo (8 km WSW). Pyroclastic flows descended the Seca (Santa Teresa) ravine on the W flank. The eruptive phase ended about 35 hours later. INSIVUMEH noted that on 14 September, explosions generated ash plumes that rose 750 m and drifted 10 km W and SW. Shock waves from some explosions vibrated nearby structures. A lava flow was active in the Santa Teresa ravine. Explosions on 15 September produced ash plumes that rose as high as 750 m and drifted 5 km NW and SW. The lava flow was 300 m long. During 17-18 September ash plumes from explosions rose almost 1 km and drifted W and SW. Incandescent material was ejected 250 m above the crater rim, and caused avalanches of material around the crater area. Ashfall was reported in areas including Panimaché I and II (8 km SW), Morelia (9 km SW), and El Porvenir.

Karymsky | Eastern Kamchatka (Russia) : Based on satellite data, KVERT reported that ash explosions at Karymsky occurred at 0420 on 20 September, producing an ash cloud that drifted 95-100 km NNE. The Aviation colour Code was raised to Orange (the second highest level on a four-colour scale).

Kilauea | Hawaiian Islands (USA) : During 13-19 September HVO reported that the lava lake continued to rise, fall, and spatter in Kilauea’s Overlook crater. Webcams recorded incandescence from long-active sources within Pu'u 'O'o Crater and from a small lava pond in a pit on the W side of the crater. The 61G lava flow, originating from a vent on Pu'u 'O'o Crater's E flank, continued to enter the ocean at Kamokuna. Surface lava flows were active above and on the pali, and on the coastal plain. On 13 September geologists noted that several prominent cracks running parallel to the coastline had widened in the past two weeks, underscoring the potential for bench collapse into the sea.

Klyuchevskoy | Central Kamchatka (Russia) : KVERT reported that on 8 September a weak thermal anomaly at Klyuchevskoy was identified in satellite images. The Aviation colour Code remained at Orange (the second highest level on a four-colour scale).

Popocatepetl | Mexico : Each day during 12-19 September CENAPRED reported 141-299 steam and gas emissions from Popocatépetl. Cloud cover often prevented observations, though gas-and-steam plumes were visible daily. During 12-13 September there were 22 explosions detected, four of which generated emissions with minor amounts of ash and ejected incandescent tephra. An explosion was detected at 1820 on 14 September. On 19 September a plume with low ash content rose 1 km. CENAPRED stated that there was no significant increase in activity at Popocatépetl related to the M 7.1 earthquake, centered beneath Puebla (45 km E), that occurred at 1314. The Alert Level remained at Yellow, Phase Two.

Reventador | Ecuador : On 15 September, in a special report, IG summarized recent activity at Reventador noting lava flows during 24 June-1 July and 23-24 August, periods of frequent small explosions in August, and periods of explosions that were less frequent but moderate-to-large in size during July and September. Data indicated no changes in the internal and external activity of the volcano, suggesting that the eruption will continue with alternation of effusive and explosive activity in the next days to weeks.

Sabancaya | Peru : Observatorio Vulcanológico del Sur del IGP (OVS-IGP) and Observatorio Vulcanológico del INGEMMET (OVI) reported that explosive activity at Sabancaya continued to decline; there was an average of 29 explosions recorded per day during 11-17 September. The earthquakes were dominated by long-period events and signals indicating emissions, with fewer numbers of hybrid events. Gas-and-ash plumes rose 2.5 km above the crater rim and drifted no more than 30 km E and SE. The MIROVA system detected one thermal anomaly. The report warned the public not to approach the crater within a 12-km radius.

Sheveluch | Central Kamchatka (Russia) : KVERT reported that a thermal anomaly over Sheveluch was identified daily in satellite images during 8-15 September. Florida, USA - Officials are urging thousands of Florida residents to evacuate due to a rising river threatening record flooding after a nearly two-week onslaught of destruction, death and terror from Hurricane Irma. Sunday officials said the Withlacoochee River has reached major flood stage at the Trilby gauge. It is currently at 16.79 feet and is expected to crest at 17.5 feet Wednesday. The crest is expected to last two days before receding. Officials warned that they may not be able to rescue residents once the river reaches a certain level. Water is already covering the streets and as high as mailboxes in some places.

Great Barrier Reef Rescue Plan

A giant starfish-eating snail could be unleashed to help save the Great Barrier Reef, officials said on Monday, with a trial underway to breed thousands of the rare species.

Predatory crown-of-thorns starfish, which munch coral, are naturally-occurring, but have proliferated due to pollution and agricultural run-off at the struggling World Heritage-listed ecosystem. Their impact has been profound with a major study of the 2 300km long reef's health in 2012 showing coral cover halved over the past 27 years, with 42% of the damage attributed to the pest.

Now Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) research has shown they avoid areas where the Pacific triton sea snail - also known as the giant triton - is present. The snails - which can grow to half a metre - have a well developed sense of smell and can hunt their prey by scent alone. Research showed they were particularly fond of crown-of-thorns, but only eat a few each week, and with the snail almost hunted to extinction for their shells, there are not many left.

This led the Australian government to on Monday announce funding to research breeding them, the ultimate aim to deploy them to control the crown-of-thorns pest.

Wildfires - North American Wildfire Smoke Travels to Europe

It's been a particularly brutal bushfire season in parts of western North America, as several large blazes continue to cause headaches from California up to British Columbia. As shocking new satellite images show, the smoke from these fires hasn't been limited to the US West Coast, or even the North American continent. It's drifted all the way over the Atlantic Ocean into European skies.

As the smoke from western bushfires drifts higher and higher, it's picked up by strong prevailing winds that take it across the continent and towards the Atlantic ocean. Incredibly, smoke that was above the Pacific Northwest on September 4 drifted to parts of western Europe in just four days.

A massive, glowing, Slinky-like "creature" photographed by a scuba diver off the coast of Australia has spurred intense speculation about what the mystery beast could be. The translucent, glowing tube is made up of strings of squid eggs from a little-known species, a diamond squid. The diamond-shaped squid is a large and mysterious creature that can be about 3 feet (1 meter) long and weigh up to 66 lbs. (30 kilograms). The species looks a bit like a kite affixed to a handful of tentacles, and the animals live in male-female pairs for their life span (about one year). The huge sea creatures lay large egg cases up to 6 feet (1.8 m) long. Each egg case can carry between 24,100 and 43,800 eggs.

Monarchs in Peril

While declining monarch butterfly populations from Mexico to eastern Canada have received the most attention in recent years, scientists at Washington State University Vancouver say western populations are now at greater risk of extinction.

“In the 1980s, 10 million monarchs spent the winter in coastal California. Today there are barely 300,000,” said biologist Cheryl Schultz.

The exact causes of the decline are unknown, but Schultz fears habitat destruction and pesticide use across the West, where the monarchs breed, are the likely culprits.

Roundup of Global Volcanic Activity - Ongoing Activity for the week of 6 September-12 September 2017

Aira | Kyushu (Japan) : JMA reported that 30 explosive events at Showa Crater (at Aira Caldera’s Sakurajima volcano) during 4-11 September ejected material as far as 800 m. Ash plumes rose as high as 2.2 km above the crater rim. Crater incandescence was observed most nights. The Alert Level remained at 3 (on a 5-level scale).

Bagana | Bougainville (Papua New Guinea) : Based on analyses of satellite imagery and model data, the Darwin VAAC reported that during 11-12 September an ash plume from Bagana rose to an altitude of 2.1 km (7,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted NW.

Bezymianny | Central Kamchatka (Russia) : KVERT reported that during 1-8 September a thermal anomaly over Bezymianny was identified daily in satellite images. A lava flow continued to flow down the W flank of the dome; incandescence from the dome was visible at night. The Aviation colour Code remained at Orange (the second highest level on a four-colour scale).

Bogoslof | Fox Islands (USA) : AVO reported that during 6-12 September nothing significant was observed in mostly cloudy satellite images of Bogoslof, and no activity was detected in seismic or infrasound data. The 8 September report noted that the crater lake had been bisected by a narrow isthmus of land. Elevated surface temperatures were identified in one satellite image during 10-11 September. The Aviation colour Code remained at Orange and the Volcano Alert Level remained at Watch.

Cleveland | Chuginadak Island (USA) : AVO reported that during 6-12 September nothing significant was observed in often cloudy satellite images and web camera views of Cleveland; minor steaming was noted during 10-11 September. In addition, nothing noteworthy was detected in seismic or infrasound data. The Aviation colour Code remained at Orange and the Volcano Alert Level remained at Watch.

Dukono | Halmahera (Indonesia) : Based on analyses of satellite imagery, wind model data, and notices from PVMBG, the Darwin VAAC reported that during 6-10 and 12 September ash plumes from Dukono rose to an altitude of 2.1 km (7,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted SW, W, and NW.

Ebeko | Paramushir Island (Russia) : Based on observations by volcanologists in Severo-Kurilsk (Paramushir Island), about 7 km E of Ebeko, explosions on 2 September generated ash plumes that rose 4 km (13,100 ft) a.s.l. Explosions during 3 and 6-7 September produced ash plumes that rose 2.1 km (6,900 ft) a.s.l. Minor amounts of ash fell in Severo-Kurilsk during 2-3 and 6-7 September. The Aviation colour Code remained at Orange (the second highest level on a four-colour scale).

Kilauea | Hawaiian Islands (USA) : During 6-12 September HVO reported that the lava lake continued to rise, fall, and spatter in Kilauea’s Overlook crater, though a deflationary trend the second half of the week caused the lake level to mostly drop. Several rockfalls and collapses of the inner crater wall veneer were noted during 7-10 September; frequent rockfalls were not uncommon during periods of lake level lowering. HVO noted that cracks running parallel to the coastline underscored the potential for bench collapse into the sea.

Klyuchevskoy | Central Kamchatka (Russia) : KVERT reported that on 7 September explosions at Klyuchevskoy recorded by a webcam generated ash plumes that rose as high as 6 km (19,700 ft) a.s.l. and drifted about 50 km NE. The Aviation colour Code remained at Orange (the second highest level on a four-colour scale).

Poas | Costa Rica : OVSICORI-UNA reported that an event at Poás at 0820 on 13 September generated plume that rose 300 m above the crater rim.

Sabancaya | Peru : Observatorio Vulcanológico del Sur del IGP (OVS-IGP) and Observatorio Vulcanológico del INGEMMET (OVI) reported that explosive activity at Sabancaya was slightly lower compared to the previous week; there was an average of 38 explosions recorded per day during 4-10 September. The earthquakes were dominated by long-period signals, with fewer numbers of hybrid events and emission signals. Gas-and-ash plumes rose 3.5 km above the crater rim and drifted no more than 40 km SE. The MIROVA system detected five thermal anomalies. The report warned the public not to approach the crater within a 12-km radius.

Sangay | Ecuador : Based on information from the Guayaquil MWO, the Washington VAAC reported that on 6 September an emission from Sangay rose 7.3 km (24,000 ft) a.s.l.

Sheveluch | Central Kamchatka (Russia) : KVERT reported that a thermal anomaly over Sheveluch was identified daily in satellite images during 2-3 and 6-7 September. Two explosive events on 7 September generated ash plumes that rose 8-10 km (26,200-32,800 ft) a.s.l. and drifted NE, SE, and S. The Aviation colour Code remained at Orange.

Sinabung | Indonesia : Based on observations by PVMBG, webcam and satellite images, and model data, the Darwin VAAC reported that during 6-8 and 12 September ash plumes from Sinabung rose 3-5.5 km (10,000-18,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted W, NW, and E.

Suwanosejima | Ryukyu Islands (Japan) : Based on JMA notices and satellite-image analyses, the Tokyo VAAC reported explosions on 6 September generated plums that rose 1.5-1.8 km (5,000-6,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted E.

Turrialba | Costa Rica : OVSICORI-UNA reported that an event at Turrialba at 0730 on 11 September generated a plume that rose 500 m above the crater rim and drifted N. Another event at 0820 on 13 September passively produced an ash plume that rose 100 m and drifted NW.

Elephants Adapt to Poaching

Elephants in eastern Africa have learned to travel at night and hide during the day to avoid poachers who are hunting tuskers into extinction, researchers reported Wednesday.

Normally elephants forage for food and migrate in daylight, resting under cover of darkness. But a sharp increase in illegal hunting driven by the global trade in ivory has forced the massive mammals to upend their usual habits.

In an upcoming study, Ihwagi details his findings, based on data gathered from 60 elephants in northern Kenya tracked with GPS devices for up to three years during the period 2002 to 2012.

The nighttime movements of the elephants increased significantly in sync with poaching levels, especially for females. In high-danger zones, females reduced daytime activity by about 50 percent on average compared to low-danger zones.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the number of African elephants has fallen by around 111,000 to 415,000 over the past decade.

The killing shows no sign of abating, with around 30,000 elephants slaughtered for their ivory every year, mainly to satisfy demand in Asia for products coveted as a traditional medicine or as status symbols.

Wildfires

Wildfires - Australia

An out-of-control bushfire in the New South Wales Hunter Valley was threatening houses on Wednesday as firefighters battled a number of fires amid unseasonable heat with Sydney experiencing its hottest September day on record. The NSW Rural Fire Service issued an emergency warning for Richmond Vale, near Cessnock on Wednesday morning. The blaze had broken containment lines and burned about 700 hectares of bushland.

Wildfires - Saskatchewan, Canada

Firefighters in northern Saskatchewan had to deal with shifting winds and hot, dry weather as they continue to battle wildfires. The dynamic conditions caused two of the three wildfires burning near Pelican Narrows to grow during the weekend.

The Granite fire, which is one kilometre east of Jan Lake, has grown to approximately 107,000 hectares, roughly six times the size of Regina.

The Preston fire, approximately three kilometres north and six kilometres west of Pelican Narrows, has grown to approximately 47,000 hectares.

A third wildfire in the area, the Wilkin fire, is currently not a threat to communities. Crews are working on securing the northern flanks of the fire.
