Maryland, USA - Swine Flu

The Maryland Department of Health reported 11 cases of influenza in pigs recently exhibited at The Great Frederick Fair. Preliminary tests show that the pigs are infected with influenza A, but it is not yet known if this strain is potentially transmissible to humans.

All swine at the Frederick County fairgrounds are under a quarantine order from the Department of Agriculture and will not be released until seven days after the last pig shows signs of influenza illness.

Pakistan - Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever

A Karachi man is the sixth recorded death due to Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) in Pakistan this year-to-date. Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever is a widespread disease caused by a tick-borne virus (Nairovirus) of the Bunyaviridae family. The CCHF virus causes severe viral hemorrhagic fever outbreaks, with a case fatality rate of 10–40%.
