Roundup of Global Volcanic Activity – New Activity for the week 22 June – 28 June 2022

Bulusan – Luzon (Philippines) : PHIVOLCS reported that unrest continued at Bulusan during 22-28 June. Emissions rose 100-400 m above the summit and drifted NW and W; cloudy weather prevented views of the volcano on 26 June. Sulfur dioxide emissions were 559-751 tonnes per day during 22-26 June. The seismic network recorded 7-65 daily volcanic earthquakes. A small-volume lahar was detected during a thunderstorm, beginning at 1904 on 26 June and lasting for 54 minutes based on seismic and infrasound data. Narrow, channel-confined lahar deposits were seen later along the Calang Creek on the SW flank, in the Cogon barangay.

Chikurachki – Paramushir Island (Russia) : KVERT reported that a thermal anomaly over Chikurachki was identified on 21 June and an explosive eruption occurred on 24 June. Explosions recorded during 0730-2100 on 24 June (local time) produced ash plumes that rose to 4.5 km (14,800 ft) a.s.l. A 14 x 30 km ash cloud was visible in satellite images at 0850 drifting 25 km SE. A VONA issued at 1445 on 25 June (local time) stated that only gas-and-steam emissions were rising from the volcano and that the Aviation Color Code was lowered to Yellow. The ash cloud from the explosive phase had drifted about 790 km SE. Satellite images on 26 June indicated no additional explosions; gas-and-steam emissions persisted.

Ebeko – Paramushir Island (Russia) : KVERT reported that moderate activity at Ebeko continued according to volcanologists in Severo-Kurilsk (Paramushir Island), about 7 km E. Explosions generated ash plumes that rose up to 2.5 km (8,200 ft) a.s.l. and drifted S, SE, and NE during 18 and 22-23 June. A thermal anomaly over the volcano was identified in satellite images on 22 June. At 1510 local time on 24 June an ash plume was observed drifting 5 km SE at an altitude of 2.5 km (8,200 ft) a.s.l..

San Cristobal – Sierra de los Marrabios : According to a news article, INETER reported that at 0751 on 26 June a moderate explosion at San Cristóbal produced a gas-and-ash plume that rose 1.5 km above the crater rim and drifted WSW. A minor amount of ash fell in the communities of La Grecias 3 and Las Grecias 4 (12 km WSW), and the city of El Viejo (18 km WSW). RSAM data spiked during the explosion and then returned to normal levels afterwards.

Russia – Heavy rains meanwhile caused floods in Russia annexed Crimea and the city of Krasnodar in southern Russia. The equivalent of a month’s rainfall fell overnight in Crimea and the river levels rose up by two meters.

China – Heavy rain has lashed more than 10 cities in the Chinese province of Shandong since the weekend, inundating streets, disrupting traffic and renewing calls for better drainage in built-up areas where concrete and asphalt trap water. Every summer, China is prone to floods that trigger landslides and swamp farmlands and cities, where rapid development and urbanisation often block off natural drainage systems. China launched a programme in 2015 to create “sponge cities” that can safely retain and drain more rainwater, with permeable asphalt and pavements among the potential technological solutions. Official data shows that about 98 per cent of China’s 654 major cities are vulnerable to flooding and water-logging, with rapid growth in recent decades creating urban sprawls that covered floodplains with impermeable concrete resulting in a call for more ‘sponge cities’.

New Zealand sea sponge populations 'dying by the millions' due to climate change

Shocking images have emerged from New Zealand showing millions of once-velvety brown sea sponges bleached bone white, the worst mass bleaching event of its type ever recorded, marine scientists say.

The alarming discovery comes amid a continued rise in ocean temperatures, a trend that scientists say is overwhelmingly due to planet-warming fossil fuel emissions. New Zealand scientists discovered thousands of bleached sea sponges in May of this year, in cold waters off the country's southwestern coast. Further findings showed the damage was far worse, with millions -- possibly tens of millions -- of sea sponges affected throughout the Fiordland region.

Northwest Passage

Melting Arctic sea ice during summer may soon become so pervasive if carbon emissions are not drastically curbed that new shipping lanes not controlled by Russia will open up. Current Russian law requires that all vessels passing through the Northern Sea Route off Siberia in summer pay tolls, be piloted by Russians and provide advance notice of their plans to use the route.

But a new study by Brown University finds that there will soon be shorter, more eco-friendly maritime routes that bypass Russian control. Arctic shipping routes between Asia and Europe are 30% to 50% shorter than using the Suez and Panama canals, and are an estimated 14 to 20 days faster.

Volcanos

Roundup of Global Volcanic Activity – Ongoing Activity for the week 15 June – 21 June 2022

Bezymianny – Central Kamchatka (Russia) : KVERT reported that eruptive activity at Bezymianny that continued during 10-17 June was characterized by strong fumarolic emissions, lava-dome incandescence, and hot avalanches. A daily thermal anomaly was also identified in satellite images.

Chiles-Cerro Negro – Colombia-Ecuador : Recent increased seismicity began in May. Earthquakes were first felt on 12 June by residents near the border of Colombia and Ecuador, in the indigenous reservations of Chiles, Panán, and Mayasquer (Colombia), and in Tufiño (Ecuador). Seismicity continued, and from 0205 on 12 June to 0832 on 14 June there were 260 events clustered in two zones, in the S part of CCNVC (at depths of less than 6 km below the CCNVC summit) and about 9 km SE beneath Caldera de Potrerillos (at depths of 7-9 km). The earthquake swarm activity was similar to other swarms recorded since 2013. A trend of inflation at a rate of approximately 28 mm/year has been recorded since 2016 (the beginning of deformation monitoring) through the end of 2020, when the deformation stabilized. Neither inflation nor deflation was detected during the beginning of 2020 or in 2021. Inflation was again detected in March and was continuing at a rate of 32 mm/year. Data from hydrothermal sites around CCNVC showed variations from previous measurements in gas data, and conductivity, temperature, pH, and morphology of a few of the hot spring locations, though they were a result of changes to the hydrothermal systems and not increased volcanic activity.

Cleveland – Chuginadak Island (USA) : AVO reported that during 15-21 June elevated surface temperatures over Cleveland were sometimes identified in satellite images, reflecting the continuing emissions of hot gases. Weather clouds sometimes prevented views of the volcano. Crater subsidence in the summit crater was detected during the previous several weeks. Sulfur dioxide emissions were detected on 15 and 21 June.

Dukono – Halmahera : Based on satellite and wind model data, the Darwin VAAC reported that during 16-21 June ash plumes from Dukono rose to 2.1 km (7,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted NW and W.

Etna – Sicily (Italy) : INGV reported that during 13-19 June gas emissions rose from Etna’s Southeast Crater (SEC) and Bocca Nuova Crater (BN); the emissions from BN were dense and voluminous on 13 June and drifted SSW. Lava effusion from the vent located at about 2,700 m elevation, along the fissure that had opened on 29 May, had slowed by 13 June and stopped by that evening. Lava continued to erupt from a vent along the 7 June fissure, located at the base of the N wall of the Valle del Bove, advancing to 1,760 m elevation by 14 June. Effusion ceased overnight during 15-16 June.

Great Sitkin – Andreanof Islands (USA) : AVO reported that the eruption at Great Sitkin continued during 8-14 June. Elevated surface temperatures were identified in satellite data almost daily, consistent with lava effusion; weather clouds sometimes obscured satellite and webcam views. Seismicity was low with several small local earthquakes detected by the seismic network.

Karymsky – Eastern Kamchatka (Russia) : KVERT reported that a thermal anomaly over Karymsky was identified in satellite images during 10-11 and 15-17 June.

Kilauea – Hawaiian Islands (USA) : HVO reported that lava continued to effuse from a vent in the lower W wall of Kilauea’s Halema`uma`u Crater during 14-22 June, entering the lava lake and flowing onto the crater floor. The surface of the lava lake was continuously active all week, and nearly continuous breakouts occurred along the margins. The lake level was variable in response to cycles of inflation and deflation. By 17 June the total volume of erupted lava was an estimated 93 million cubic meters, and the lake which had risen a total of 120 m since 29 September 2021.

Krakatau – Sunda Strait : PVMBG reported that several eruptive events at Anak Krakatau were recorded during 15-17 June. Eruptions at 0636, 1337, and 2119 on 15 June, 1241 on 16 June, and 0042 and 1839 on 17 June produced dense gray-to-black ash plumes that rose 300-600 m above the summit and drifted N, SW, and S. A few of the webcam images posted with the reports showed ejected incandescent material.

Lewotolok – Lembata Island : PVMBG reported that the eruption at Lewotolok continued during 14-22 June. An eruptive event at 1501 on 16 June produced a white-to-gray ash plume that rose about 700 m above the summit and drifted W and NW. Another event at 1127 on 17 June generated a dense gray ash plume that rose about 1 km and drifted W.

Merapi – Central Java : BPPTKG reported that the eruption at Merapi continued during 10-16 June. The heights and morphologies of the SW lava dome and the central lava dome were unchanged from the previous week, and seismicity remained at high levels. As many as 58 lava avalanches traveled down the Bebeng drainage on the SW flank, reaching a maximum distance of 1.8 km. Seismicity remained high.

Pavlof – Alaska Peninsula, Alaska : AVO reported that the eruption at a vent on Pavlof’s upper E flank was ongoing during 14-21 June, and seismic tremor persisted. Daily elevated surface temperatures identified in satellite images were consistent with the continuing effusion of short (500 m or less) lava flows.

Reventador – Ecuador : IG reported that a high level of activity continued at Reventador during 14-22 June, though cloudy weather conditions sometimes prevented visual observations. Gas-and-ash plumes, often observed multiple times a day with the webcam or reported by the Washington VAAC, rose as high as 1.7 km above the summit and drifted mainly NW and W. Incandescence from the crater was often visible at night or during the early morning.

Ruapehu – North Island (New Zealand) : On 20 June GeoNet reported continuing unrest at Ruapehu. Tremor levels had been characterized as weak to moderate for the previous three weeks but increased for a brief period. Levels increased sharply during the evening of 17 June, fluctuated between moderate and strong levels on 18 June, and then decreased to weak levels by 19 June. Lake water temperatures continued to decline, reaching 22 degrees Celsius.

Sangay – Ecuador : IG reported a high level of activity at Sangay during 14-22 June. Daily ash-and-gas plumes were identified in webcam images, and seen in satellite images by the Washington VAAC. Plumes rose as high as 2.4 km above the volcano and drifted W and SW; ashfall was reported in Retén Ichubamba (35 km WNW) and Chauzán San Alfonso (40 km W) during 14-16 June. Almost every day multiple thermal anomalies over the volcano were visible in satellite data. Weather clouds sometimes obscured views of the volcano.

Semisopochnoi – Aleutian Islands (USA) : AVO reported that low-level eruptive activity at Semisopochnoi’s North Cerberus cone continued during 14-21 June. Periods of weak tremor were recorded by the seismic network. Weather clouds often prevented satellite and webcam views; minor steam emissions were visible in one clear webcam image on 17 June.

Sheveluch – Central Kamchatka (Russia) : KVERT reported that a thermal anomaly over Sheveluch was identified in satellite images during 10-17 June and explosions, hot avalanches, and lava-dome extrusion continued. A daily thermal anomaly was identified in satellite images. Webcam images recorded explosions on 10 June that sent ash plumes to 6.5 km (21,300 ft) a.s.l. The ash plumes were visible in satellite images drifting 130 km SE. At 0847 on 20 June (local time) explosions were recorded in webcam images. Ash plumes rose to 7 km (23,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted 10 km E.

Suwanosejima – Ryukyu Islands (Japan) : JMA reported that the eruption at Suwanosejima’s Ontake Crater continued during 13-20 June. Crater incandescence was visible at night. Emissions rose as high as 1.6 km above the crater rim and material was ejected as far as 300 m from the vent.

Climate change is causing an increase in desertificaton

Climate change has caused an increase in desertification. The consequence for countries such as Mauritania is a significant drop in the agricultural production of some regions, leaving farmers struggling to grow enough food to eat or sell. The region of Guidimakha used to have significant rainfall, up to 1600mm in the 1990s, now rainfall barely reaches 400mm.

Politicians and experts met last week in Madrid to discuss ways to tackle drought and the increasing spread of deserts across the globe.

Wildfires – Spain, Germany and Greece

Germany – Residents of about 20 villages were ordered to evacuate as a forest fire, that has been burning since Friday, approached their homes about 70 kilometers (43 miles) from Berlin. Others were told to prepare to leave in the next few hours. Earlier, a fire brigade spokesperson said the wildfire’s area had spread to “around 100 to 110 hectares,”.
Germany has seen numerous wildfires in recent days following a period of intense heat and little rain.

Greece – On Sunday, a wildfire continued to rage out of control in central Evia, Greece’s second-largest island. Fanned by strong winds, the blaze spread across the slopes of a mountainous forest in Gaia. Authorities ordered the evacuation of the village of Kremastos as a precaution as the blaze got as close as 800 meters (roughly 2,600 feet) from some homes.

Spain – Spanish authorities said temperatures dropped on Sunday morning, giving some respite to the 650 emergency workers battling the burning vegetation. Supported by water-dumping aircraft, they were able to establish a perimeter around the fire that started in Zamora’s Sierra de la Culebra which has scorched 25 000 ha, while 18 villages have been evacuated. Wildfires were also active in three parts of northeastern Catalonia: in Lleida, in Tarragona and in a nature park in Garraf, just south of Barcelona. Firefighters said they have responded to over 200 different wildfires just in Catalonia over the past week.

Triple La Niña

Predictions that the La Niña ocean cooling in the Pacific will strengthen for the third consecutive year likely means there will be more severe weather around the world for months to come.

For the past two years, La Niña has brought crop-withering drought to Africa, unprecedented floods to eastern Australia and two very active Atlantic hurricane seasons.

The U.S. environmental agency NOAA says that while La Niñas often come for two consecutive years, it now seems likely there will be a rare “triple La Niña.” Temperatures across the Pacific where the cooling typically occurs were the coldest since 1950 during April. They were also the coldest since 1988 in May.

Wildlife

Climate change is causing “mass die-offs” of animals

Rising temperatures lower many species survival rates due to changes that lead to less food, less successful reproduction, and interfering with the environment for native wildlife. Increased precipitation from climate change is contributing to more frequent and extreme weather events such as flooding. The higher frequency of flooding has detrimental effects on wildlife because they can destroy key pieces of ecosystems and habitats.

Recent “mass die-offs” of the flightless little blue penguin, which is native to New Zealand have been reported. Hundreds of the birds have washed up dead on New Zealand beaches since May. All the birds were at least half the normal weight, they had no fat on them at all and their muscle tissue had wasted away. Tests were performed on the birds to rule out disease and biotoxins, and it was determined that the birds died from starvation.

While it’s not unusual for animals like the little blue penguin to die from severe weather, the fact that they’re now dying this frequently, and in this high of number, is what’s alarming. Taylor points out that mass deaths of this size usually happen around once a decade, not three times in six years.

The U.S. has witnessed similar “mass die-offs” in recent months. Earlier this week it was reported that thousands of cattle died from extreme heat stress in feedlots in southwestern Kansas.

Plants vs Lighting

A new study documents how artificial light affects the seasonal rhythms of plants around U.S. cities.

Researchers from Iowa State University found that man-made lighting at night alters the natural circadian rhythms of plants, lengthening the pollen season for many of them.

They say this results in urban and suburban residents suffering from sneezing and itchy eyes for longer periods each year.

By comparing nighttime satellite images in the visible spectrum with historic plant data around 3,000 urban sites, they found that artificial light causes leaf budding in the spring about nine days earlier while also delaying the colors of fall foliage by about six days. The longer growing season could also have implications for crops grown around urban settings.

Europe Bakes in Heatwave

Spain is seeing its hottest early summer temperatures, one area of France banned outdoor events, and drought stalked Italian farmers as a heatwave sent Europeans hunting for shade and fretting over climate change. Temperatures reached 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) in Madrid on Friday. A level not seen so early in the year since 1981. Northern Italian regions risk losing up to half their agricultural output due to a drought, as lakes and rivers start to run dangerously low, jeopardizing irrigation. Italy’s longest river, the Po, was experiencing its worst drought for 70 years, leaving many sections of the vast, northern waterway completely dried up.

In France, the Gironde department around Bordeaux prohibited public events including concerts and those at indoor venues without air conditioning. Fourteen administrative departments were on red alert, with schoolchildren told to stay at home in these areas. Speed limits were lowered in several regions, including around Paris, to limit exhaust emissions and a buildup of harmful smog.

Britain’s weather service said Friday was the hottest day of the year so far, with temperatures above 32 Celsius in some parts of the southeast.

Earth’s Oscillating Core

While scientists have for decades believed that Earth’s inner core consistently rotates faster than the planet’s surface, there is new evidence that the core oscillates and actually changed direction in the six years from 1969 to 1974.

The discovery was made in part by examining seismic data from Soviet underground nuclear tests from 1971 to 1974. Without such blasts, only the less-revealing quake data are available. niversity of Southern California researchers say their findings explain the variations in the length of a day, which has wavered during recent decades.

Arctic sea ice has been much slower to melt this spring than in the last 10 years, the result of temperatures being closer to the 1981 to 2010 average than the record warmth mainly experienced this century.

Ice coverage in May was almost 5 million square miles, with Hudson Bay, the Beaufort Sea, waters of Arctic Canada and the eastern Siberian Sea still mainly frozen at a time when the ice should have been melting. While the June 1 sea ice extent was the highest of the last nine years, it was still 16,000 square miles lower than the 1981 to 2010 average and the 16th lowest ever recorded for the date.

Secret population of polar bears found living in seemingly impossible habitat

A secret population of polar bears in Greenland has been discovered in a seemingly impossible habitat — one that, for most of the year, lacks the floating platforms of sea ice the beasts use to hunt. The unusual group, which scientists previously thought was part of another nearby population, has been hiding in plain sight for hundreds of years.

The bears live on the steep slopes around fjords — long and narrow coastal inlets, where glaciers meet the ocean — and hunt on a patchwork of glacial ice that breaks up in these inlets. The new discovery suggests that some polar bears, at least, may be able to adapt to sea ice disappearing as climate change worsens, the study suggests.

Glacier ice may help small numbers of polar bears survive for longer periods under climate warming, but it is not available for the vast majority of polar bears. This is because this type of glacier ice is only found near a small fraction of other polar bear populations.

Roundup of Global Volcanic Activity – Ongoing Activity for the week 8 June – 14 June 2022

Aira – Kyushu (Japan) : JMA reported that nighttime incandescence at Minamidake Crater (at Aira Caldera’s Sakurajima volcano) was visible during 6-13 June. Very small eruptive events were recorded during 6-10 June.

Bezymianny – Central Kamchatka (Russia) : KVERT reported that eruptive activity at Bezymianny was characterized by strong fumarolic emissions, lava-dome incandescence, and hot avalanches continued during 4-9 June. A daily thermal anomaly was identified in satellite images.

Dukono – Halmahera : Based on satellite and wind model data, the Darwin VAAC reported that during 8-14 June ash plumes from Dukono rose to 2.1 km (7,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted NW, W, and SW.

Erta Ale – Ethiopia : On 2, 7, and 12 June infrared satellite data showed two thermal anomalies of variable intensities in Erta Ale’s S pit crater.

Etna – Sicily (Italy) : INGV reported that during 6-12 June explosive activity at Etna’s Southeast Crater (SEC) produced sporadic and minor ash emissions that rapidly dispersed. The fissure located at the upper part of the Valle del Bove, between 2,700 and 2,900 m elevation, continued to produce lava flows at a variable rate. The flows were most active between 2,000 and 2,100 m elevation but overall were visibly cooling during the week. Flows from the fissure that had opened on 7 June at the base of the N wall of the Valle del Bove, at 1,979 m elevation, had traveled 170 m and were also cooling. A new fissure with three active vents opened on 11 June around 1,900 m elevation. Lava effusion was slow, and the flow only traveled a few tens of meters.

Great Sitkin – Andreanof Islands (USA) : AVO reported that the eruption at Great Sitkin continued during 8-14 June. Elevated surface temperatures were identified in satellite data almost daily, consistent with lava effusion. Seismicity was low.

Karymsky – Eastern Kamchatka (Russia) : KVERT reported that a thermal anomaly over Karymsky was identified in satellite images during 4-9 June.

Kilauea – Hawaiian Islands (USA) : HVO reported that lava continued to effuse from a vent in the lower W wall of Kilauea’s Halema`uma`u Crater during 8-14 June, entering the lava lake and flowing onto the crater floor. The surface of the lava lake was continuously active all week, and the lake level was relatively stable. Nearly-continuous breakouts of lava occurred along the margins of the lake. The sulfur dioxide emission rate was approximately 1,900 and 1,350 tonnes per day on 8 and 10 June, respectively.

Lewotolok – Lembata Island : PVMBG reported that the eruption at Lewotolok continued during 8-14 June. Daily white-and-gray emissions rose as high as 1 km above the summit and drifted in multiple directions. The summit crater was often incandescent, and a 200-m-long lava flow was active W of the summit.

Merapi – Central Java : BPPTKG reported that the eruption at Merapi continued during 3-9 June. The heights and morphologies of the SW lava dome and the central lava dome were unchanged from the previous week, and seismicity remained at high levels. As many as 75 lava avalanches, reaching a maximum distance of 2 km, traveled down the Bebeng drainage on the SW flank. Seismicity remained high.

Pavlof – Alaska Peninsula, Alaska : AVO reported that the eruption at a vent on Pavlof’s upper E flank was ongoing during 8-14 June, and seismic tremor persisted. Daily elevated surface temperatures identified in satellite images were consistent with the continuing effusion of short (500 m or less) lava flows. Diffuse, low-level ash emissions were visible in webcam images on 13 June.

Popocatepetl – Mexico: CENAPRED reported that the eruption at Popocatépetl continued during 7-14 June. Each day there were 9-36 steam-and-gas emissions that rose from the crater and drifted in multiple directions.

Ruapehu – North Island (New Zealand) : On 14 June GeoNet reported that unrest at Ruapehu continued to decline. During the previous week volcanic tremor levels were weak, but remained above background levels recorded since 2013. Lake water temperatures had dropped to 23 degrees Celsius, which corresponded to the long-term average heat flow. Relatively high sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide measurements were recorded in mid-May, but weather conditions prevented gas measurement flights after that time.

Semeru – Eastern Java : PVMBG reported that the eruption at Semeru continued during 8-14 June. VONAs were issued for a few eruptive events (recorded at 0547 on 10 June, 0546 on 11 June, 0521 on 13 June, and at 0546 on 14 June) that produced ash plumes that rose 200-500 m above the summit and drifted in multiple directions.

Semisopochnoi – Aleutian Islands (USA) : AVO reported that low-level eruptive activity at Semisopochnoi’s North Cerberus cone continued during 7-14 June. Seismicity remained elevated with intermittent tremor and occasional explosions. Minor ash emissions rising to low altitudes (less than 1.5 km (5,000 ft) a.s.l.) were visible in webcam images on most days; weather clouds sometimes prevented satellite and webcam views.

Sheveluch – Central Kamchatka (Russia) : KVERT reported that a thermal anomaly over Sheveluch was identified in satellite images during 4-9 June and explosions, hot avalanches, and lava-dome extrusion continued. A daily thermal anomaly was identified in satellite images.

Suwanosejima – Ryukyu Islands (Japan) : JMA reported that the eruption at Suwanosejima’s Ontake Crater continued during 6-13 June. Crater incandescence was visible at night. One explosion was recorded during 6-10 June, producing a plume that rose 2 km above the crater rim and ejecting material 300 m away from the vent. During 10-13 June eruption plumes rose as high as 1.5 km above the crater rim and material was ejected as far as 300 m from the vent.

Sporadic ash emissions began to be observed at 0430. At daybreak emissions were visible rising from six vents: Blackbird Crater (the main crater), three explosion pits in the summit crater, and two vents on the NW and N sides of the summit. Steam, gas, and ash plumes rose 400-750 m above the summit and drifted several kilometers NW. Ash carried by winds fell in areas as far as 50 km NW, in Sorsogon City and Palanas, Pilar, Sorsogon Province, across Sorsogon Bay, and as far as Anislag, Daraga, Albay. Ash on the upper NW flanks was visible, and several barangays in the municipalities of Casiguran, Juban, and Magallanes experienced minor ashfall. Emissions continued throughout the day. According to a news article more than 11,000 people (at least 2,800 families) in Juban evacuated, and flights in and out of the Bicol International Airport were cancelled. After the eruption gas emissions rose from the main crater and, for the first time this year, from the NW summit vent.

Krakatau – Sunda Strait : PVMBG reported that an eruptive event at Anak Krakatau was recorded at 1159 on 8 June, producing a dense white-to-gray ash plume that rose about 500 m above the summit and drifted SW. At 1304 a dense gray ash plume rose around 500 m and drifted S.

South Africa – Heavy rainfall over the last 2 days has caused flooding in areas of Cape Town and areas of Western Cape Province, South Africa. Cape Town deployed over 100 teams to attend to flooding related complaints and incidents. The teams assisted to unblock stormwater drains by pumping water away from low lying areas and by providing sand bags and flood protection. The city said very high rainfall – up to 128mm of rain fell at the Newlands rainfall station within a 24-hour period on 13 June 2022 – stretched the City’s stormwater infrastructure beyond capacity.

India – Heavy rain has once again taken its toll in the state of Assam in India, where at least 4 people have died in the last 24 hours. The state saw severe flooding during May this year which left 38 dead and over 90,000 displaced. Flooding had subsided in most areas by the first week of June. However, heavy rain on 14 June caused flooding in urban areas of Guwahati, the state capital.

Montana, USA – Billings, Montana, reported unprecedented flooding across parts southern parts of the state and borders of Wyoming after heavy rain fell over a significant late season snowpack in the mountains. “This led to flooding rarely or never seen before across many area rivers and streams,” NWS said. Numerous homes and other structures including bridges were damaged or destroyed in the region. A cabin along the Stillwater River was ripped from its foundations and dragged along the river near Nye, Stillwater County. Numerous rivers in the region were above flood levels.

Climate change: Green energy ‘stagnates’ as fossil fuels dominate

A new study says that the transition to renewables, in essence, has stalled. The use of coal, oil and gas continues to dominate total energy consumption. The share of renewable energy has moved in the last decade from 10.6% to 11.7%, but fossil fuels, all coal and gas have moved from 80.1% to 79.6% showing the situation is stagnating.

While renewable energy had reached 10% of global electricity production in 2021, the problems lie in challenging areas such as transport. Cars, lorries, ships and airplanes account for 32% of total final energy consumption, but green energy only had a 3.7% share last year.

As energy prices have risen for consumers, some countries, including the UK, have imposed new taxes on the profits made by oil and gas producers. However, many nations have also enacted new subsidies for fossil fuels. We’re spending globally $11m per minute on subsidising fossil fuel. In 2020, this was 7% of the global GDP.

This obviously creates a system which is unbalanced, because even though renewable energy is an economic alternative to fossil fuels, it’s not playing in a fair market.

The world’s largest trees are struggling to survive climate change

They are the largest trees in the world, living monuments with massive trunks and towering canopies that can thrive for 3,000 years. But ancient sequoia trees, which have been decimated by severe wildfires around California’s Sierra Nevada, are struggling to keep up with ever worsening conditions. And this summer, they could face their worst fate yet.

The trees, which grow in a narrow band of the Sierra Nevada, are accustomed to frequent wildfires — their tree rings show fire recurring every six to 30 years. But the worsening intensity of recent blazes have been too much for them to handle. Since 2020, three fires have resulted in the loss of 13 to 19 percent of the entire population. In August 2020, the Castle Fire killed up to 10,600 trees. And as many as 3,637 sequoias were killed or will ultimately die as a result of the September 2021 Windy and KNP Complex fires in the southern Sierra Nevada, according to the National Park Service.

Sequoias have thick bark that can withstand lower-intensity fire, and their high canopies are usually above the flames, but recent fires are reaching and consuming the canopy.

The southern Sierra, hard hit during the 2012-2016 drought, has become an epicenter for tree mortality. Drought-weakened trees, particularly pine and cedar, were killed by insects during those years, and the effects of the past two years of extreme drought are also becoming apparent. Given record-setting dryness in 2022, another significant die-off is possible this year. Hotter and longer fire seasons due to climate change are exacerbating already volatile forest conditions.

Massive Antarctica glaciers have melted the most in at least 5,500 years

The Thwaites and Pine Island glaciers have experienced unprecedented ice loss over the past 5,500 years, according to new scientific research, suggesting the retreat could be irreversible.

The two glaciers, both part of the west Antarctic ice sheet, originated in the mid-Holocene period, roughly 7,000 to 5,000 years ago, and have remained stable until very recently. That part of Antarctica is retreating and thinning quickly, with the two glaciers melting underneath given deep, warm currents.

The melting of the glaciers could trigger extensive ice loss in that part of Antarctica, which could contribute as much as 3.4 meters to global sea level rise over the next few centuries.

New Ecosystem Discovered Under Antarctica

A never-before-seen ecosystem lurks in an underground river deep below the icy surface in Antarctica. Researchers recently brought this “hidden world” into the light, revealing a dark and jagged cavern filled with swarms of tiny, shrimplike creatures.

The scientists found the secret subterranean habitat tucked away beneath the Larsen Ice Shelf — a massive, floating sheet of ice attached to the eastern coast of the Antarctic peninsula that famously birthed the world’s largest iceberg in 2021. Satellite photos showed an unusual groove in the ice shelf close to where it met with the land, and researchers identified the peculiar feature as a subsurface river. The team drilled down around 1,640 feet (500 meters) below the ice’s surface using a powerful hot-water hose to reach the underground chamber.

When the researchers sent a camera down through the icy tunnel and into the cavern, hundreds of tiny, blurry flecks in the water obscured the video feed. Initially, the team thought their equipment was faulty. But after refocusing the camera, they realized that the lens was being swarmed by tiny crustaceans known as amphipods. This caught the team off guard, as they had not expected to find any type of life this far below the icy surface.

China - Heavy rain, flooding and landslides have affected over 2 million people in the provinces of Hunan and Jiangxi in China after days of heavy rainfall. Disaster management officials in Hunan said the rainfall intensity exceeded or was close to the historical records. The heavy rainfall has caused rivers and lakes to rise, with significant flooding occurring along small and medium rivers, the Hunan Department of Emergency Management said. A total of 1.79 million people across the province have been affected by the severe weather. At least 10 people have died and 3 are still missing. Over 2,700 houses collapsed or were seriously damaged and around 286,000 people evacuated. More heavy rain is expected. Heavy rain and flooding has also occurred in parts of the neighbouring province of Jiangxi. As of 04 June, 800,000 people were affected and 76,300 hectares of cropland damaged. Media reported on 04 June that 2 coaches of a bullet train derailed in Guizhou Province, China, due to a mudslide caused by heavy rain. The train driver died and 4 people were injured.

Antarctic Pollution

Microplastic pollution has for the first time been found in freshly fallen snow across Antarctica’s pristine Ross Ice Shelf.

Researcher Alex Aves from the University of Canterbury says she found at least some of 13 different types of microplastics in all 19 samples collected. “It’s incredibly sad, but finding microplastics in fresh Antarctic snow highlights the extent of plastic pollution into even the most remote regions of the world,” Aves said.

Such debris has also been found from the summit of Mount Everest to the deepest depth of the ocean. It has become so ubiquitous worldwide that it is in the food we eat and the air we breathe. Experts fear the Antarctic microplastics could accelerate the melting of snow and ice there.

Fukushima Quake Fears

Images taken by a robotic camera at Japan’s Fukushima nuclear power station show that one of the melted-down reactors is in danger of collapse in the event of another strong earthquake in the region. Images show Reactor No. 1 is now resting precariously on a flimsy frame of corroded supports. The concrete base also appears to have melted, with only a metal frame now holding up the reactor’s pressure vessel.

Three reactors at the Fukushima plant melted down following the magnitude 9.0 temblor and subsequent tsunami in 2011 that knocked out power to the plant’s cooling system. Should the pressure vessel topple in a quake, experts say it would make the decades-long cleanup efforts, and removing the melted fuel, far more difficult.
