Dengue Fever – Philippines
In a follow-up on the dengue fever situation in the Philippines, the Department of Health reported Wednesday that through June 4 this year, the number of dengue fever cases reported nationwide comes in at 39,705. This is 31 percent higher compared to the same period in 2021. IN addition, there were 202 dengue related deaths.
Monkeypox
France – According to Public Health France, as of June 21, 277 confirmed cases of monkeypox have been reported in France: the majority (195) in Ile-de-France.
Poliovirus – London, England
Health authorities have found poliovirus in sewage samples collected from the London Beckton Sewage Treatment Works. Investigations are underway after the several closely-related viruses which were found in sewage samples taken between February and May. The virus has continued to evolve and is now classified as a ‘vaccine-derived’ poliovirus type 2 (VDPV2), which on rare occasions can cause serious illness, such as paralysis, in people who are not fully vaccinated. The last case of wild polio contracted in the UK was confirmed in 1984. The UK was declared polio-free in 2003.
