Wildfires – Italy
Emergency crews are responding to a wildfire on the eastern outskirts of Rome as of June 27. A summer camp and several homes in the affected area have been evacuated by authorities. Dozens of people in the vicinity of the fire have been treated for smoke inhalation. The fire has broken out amid an ongoing heatwave across much of the country that is set to continue for several more days. The hot and dry conditions may lead to further fire growth in the coming hours and days.
Wildfires – Alaska
Alaska is struggling through a record breaking wildfire season. A million acres have burned as of June 15, the earliest in decades. The fires are being fueled by unusually dry and warm weather in the region. More than 300 wildfires have burned recently and about 100 are still burning across the state. This includes the East Fork Fire, which was set ablaze in late May and has burned more than 163,000 acres. It ranks among the state’s largest tundra wildfires on record.
