Hepatitis A in Sydney, Australia
There are reports of a serious hepatitis A outbreak across Victoria and Sydney. Affecting sexually active gay men, the disease is believed to be spread by European travelers and has been reported in four Sydney-based men already.
Since 2016, hepatitis A outbreaks among MSM (male to male sexual contact) have been reported in 16 European countries and numerous states in the USA. In total, there have been around 1,500 confirmed cases in Europe. The strain detected in Sydney is similar to that circulating in Europe, further solidifying beliefs that the disease has been spread from these travelers.
