Roundup of Global Volcanic Activity

Shiveluch (Kamchatka): The volcano's activity seems to have increased during the recent days / weeks. A comparably large explosion occurred yesterday morning at 07:06 local time. Judging from webcam images, it sent a shower of incandescent bombs to heights approaching 1.5-2 km above the lava dome and more than 1 km lateral distance.

Kilauea (Hawai'i): The front of the the June 27th lava flow remains stalled at 530 m from the Pahoa Marketplace, but during yesterday's overflight, several small breakouts were seen active immediately upslope from the front. The flow had advanced about 150 m since December 27. Many small breakouts were also active along the length of the flow up to about 3 km (2 miles) upslope from the front of the flow, as well as within the ground crack area near the True/Mid-Pacific well pad and about 3 km (2 miles) downslope from Puʻu ʻŌʻō.

Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai (Tonga, Tonga Islands): A new submarine eruption started at the shallow submarine volcano off Tongatapu island in the Tonga archipelago. Satellite images from 28 Dec already show a plume of discolored water, not visible on images of 18 Dec, suggesting the activity started during this interval. From available pictures on social media, a water and possibly ash-containing plume is visible from a distance, which indicates that the eruption has by now breached the surface. Whether or not it will lead to the formation of a temporary or even permanent new island remains to be seen in 2015.
