Red Tide Reprieve

One of Chile’s worst red tide outbreaks in recent memory is receding after an extended period in which some marine life became contaminated and the country’s lucrative fishing industry was disrupted.

“The decline of the El Niño weather phenomenon has been key for this,” University of Concepción researcher Laura Farias told Reuters.

The El Niño ocean warmth provides favourable conditions for the massive algae blooms to flourish along the Chilean coast. The end of the red tide will help fishing communities recover from the yearlong outbreak.
