Storms and Floods

Tropical Storms – Roundup of Tropical Storms:

In the Southern Hemisphere: Tropical cyclone 06p (Tiffany), located approximately 180 nm northwest of Cairns, Australia, is tracking southwestward at 06 knots.

Tropical cyclone 05p (Cody), located approximately 198 nm southwest of Suva, Fiji, is tracking west-southeastward at 07 knots.

Indonesia – More flooding disasters have affected Indonesia, this time in East Java Province where at least one person has died and one is missing. The disaster in East Java follows severe flooding in Jayapura City in the province of Papua, where at least 6 people died last week. Flooding has damaged hundreds of homes and affected over 1,600 people across the districts of Kaliwates, Rambi Puji and Panti in Jember Regency. Public buildings and places of worship were also flooded.

Brazil – Around 700 families have been forced from their homes after flooding rom overflowing rovers in the state of Pará in northern Brazil. Levels of the Tocantins and Itacaiúnas rivers in of Pará state have been rising since the start of the year after a period of heavy rainfall. Families have evacuated their homes in the city of Marabá, located at the confluence of the two rivers. Municipality government reported on 04 January that the rivers were already 11.50 metres above normal.

South Africa – At least 7 people have lost their lives in severe flash flooding that struck parts of Eastern Cape Province in South Africa. Heavy rainfall on 08 January 2022 triggered the floods which affected areas of Mthatha, Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, the township of Mdantsane and areas of East London. According to figures from World Meteorological Organization (WMO), East London recorded 58 mm of rain in 24 hours to 09 January.
