Disease

Foot and Mouth Disease in Punjab, India.

An outbreak of the highly infectious foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) has been declared in many villages of the Faridkkot area which could plunge the agriculture and dairy industry into a deeper crisis. While there are reports of casualties among cows due to the disease in some villages in the last two days, the extent of the outbreak remains unclear.

The Department of Animal Husbandry does not have enough vaccine to inoculate all cattle in the area. A further difficulty is the unwillingness of local farmers to come forward top have their cattle vaccinated.
