Volcanos

Roundup of Global Volcanic Activity

Turrialba (Costa Rica): The volcano's activity has been fairly constant over the past weeks. It continues to erupt near-constant ash and steam plumes reaching up to 500-1000 m height and drifting into various directions (mostly to the west). Light ash falls regularly affect downwind areas. The activity, at fluctuating intensity, seems to be mostly driven by the magma-water interaction (phreatomagmatic activity), caused by a (probably small) body of new magma underneath the shallow hydrothermal system.

Sinabung (Sumatra, Indonesia): An explosion this morning produced an ash plume that rose 1500 m and a small pyroclastic flow of 700 m length. This shows that the supply of magma continues even though most of the recently emplaced dome has disappeared during past week's collapse events.
