Wildfires

Wildfires - Australia

Firefighters are working to manage more than 50 fires across NSW, as their focus turns to an out-of-control blaze in Port Stephens in the Hunter region.

The fire is burning in the area of Karuah, Balickera, Limeburners Creek and Swan Bay, and has burnt 6,500 hectares. During the day hundreds of firefighters worked to control the blaze, which was burning along an 80-kilometre front, and water-bombing aircraft joined the battle.

A bushfire that threatened to destroy homes in Sydney on Friday, has burnt through bushland in the suburb of Cranebrook, 65 km (40 miles) west of Sydney's central business district. On Saturday (November 5) a 16-year-old was arrested by police for deliberately lighting the fire, after two people were arrested for the same blaze in Cranebrook. Combined high temperatures and strong winds saw bushfires burning in the suburb of Castle Cove in Sydney's north.
