Quebec, Canada - Persistent, steady rains soaking swaths of Central and Eastern Canada that have already endured record precipitation levels threatened to trigger widespread flooding Friday and put residents and governments on high alert. Environment Canada said a massive system was slowly drenching much of Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes. Relentless rain falling on regions that have already endured double to triple the seasonal norms for rainfall over the past five weeks.

Midwest USA - A Missouri man died after his vehicle was swept off a road near a flooded creek, bringing the death toll from historic flooding in the Midwest and South to 10. Earlier this week, storms and heavy rainfall that began over the weekend triggered flooding that forced the closure of hundreds of roads in Missouri, Arkansas and Illinois and shut down two major waterways. Residents along the Mississippi River shored up riverbanks with sandbags Friday as floodwaters receding from smaller rivers upstream pour into the vital waterway. The Mississippi River at St. Louis is expected to reach a top five crest on record Saturday, about 12 feet above flood stage, just below the crest from January 2016. In Cape Girardeau, Missouri, sandbagging was underway to protect homes. Meanwhile, the situation in Louisiana became dire Thursday as water began to pour over river banks.

New York, USA - Heavy rains brought flash floods that are likely to hamper the afternoon commute home in the New York metropolitan area on Friday. Transit officials are reporting delays caused by flooding while those traveling by air may have to wait up to four hours at any of the three local airports. The heavy rain prompted officials to shut down the main Seventh Avenue entrance to Penn Station in midtown Manhattan. Water has also been seen accumulating at subway stations of City Hall, Borough Hall in Brooklyn, and the World Trade Center.
