Anthrax - British Columbia, Canada
A diagnosis of naturally acquired anthrax has been confirmed in the death of 13 livestock on a farm near Fort St. John. The animals are thought to have contracted the disease from exposure to dormant anthrax spores in the soil of a feeding site, which is no longer being used.
Syphilis - Alaska
Alaska health officials report as of Oct. 22, 75 cases of infectious syphilis have been reported to the Alaska Section of Epidemiology (SOE) during 2018. This is the largest syphilis outbreak to have occurred in Alaska in at least four decades. Eighty-five percent of cases were in Anchorage and nearly nine out 10 were reported in men.
Hepatitis A - Kentucky, USA - Update
In a follow-up on the hepatitis A outbreak in Kentucky, state health officials report over 2,000 confirmed, probable and suspect cases of acute hepatitis A. As of mid-October, 2,159 cases have been reported, including 14 fatalities.
