Diphtheria - Venezuela
In an update on the diphtheria outbreak in Venezuela, the outbreak that began three years ago is ongoing. According to data from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Venezuela has reported 324 diphtheria cases since the beginning of the year, including 15 fatalities.
Cholera - Yemen
Cholera cases have picked up dramatically in Yemen in 2019, in fact, during the first six months of this year, the total cholera cases are more than all of 2018. According to official data, Yemen saw 371,326 cholera cases, including 505 deaths in all of 2018. During the first six months (Jan. 1- Jun 30) this year, the total is 451,895, including 705 deaths.
Dengue Fever - Laos
The Laos Ministry of Health issued a warning this week as the trend of weekly reporting of dengue fever is increasing. According to a Vientiane Times report, health officials have advised people throughout the country to clear potential mosquito breeding sites as the current outbreak of dengue fever has claimed 27 lives and 11,561 people have contracted the virus so far this year through Sunday. Most of the infections and deaths were recorded in the capital and the southern provinces.
