White-nose Syndrome - California, USA

The fungus that causes White-nose Syndrome (WNS), a deadly disease of bats, has been detected in low levels in California for the first time. Fungal DNA of Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd) was detected in samples collected this spring from bats on private land in the Plumas County town of Chester.

Hepatitis A - Costa Rica

The Costa Rica Ministry of Health reports the outbreak of Hepatitis A (HAV) in the canton of Alajuela continues. As of June 28, there are 140 cases of HAV laboratory confirmed this year, 43 in June.

African Swine Fever

China - China’s agriculture ministry said on Friday it had confirmed an African swine fever outbreak in Luchuan county in the southwestern region of Guangxi that killed nine pigs on a farm. China has reported 143 outbreaks of the incurable disease since August last year, and culled almost 1.2 million pigs. Many outbreaks are not reported, farmers have told Reuters, and as many as half of China’s breeding pigs may have died or been slaughtered because of the spreading disease.

Bulgaria - Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) on Friday evening confirmed a second outbreak of African swine fever in domestic pigs in three days, and the third since last August. The disease was located in a backyard pig farm in the village of Novachene near Danube River, only 16 km southeast of the village of Zhernov where the previous case was confirmed on Wednesday.

Poliovirus - Pakistan, Angola

Five additional wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) cases have been confirmed in Pakistan this past week, according to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Two cases were reported from Torghar district, two from Bannu district, and one from North Waziristan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Year-to-date, Pakistan has recorded 32 WPV1 cases.

Meanwhile Angola reported their second cVDPV2 outbreak this year. This one was in Kuvango district, Huila province.
