Plastic Eating Bacteria

British researchers have identified naturally occurring lake bacteria that grow faster and more effectively by eating plastic bags, breaking them down to natural carbon compounds.

Writing in the journal Nature Communications, Cambridge scientists suggest that enriching waters with particular species of bacteria could be a natural way to remove plastic pollution from the environment. They add that “plastic pollution is stimulating the whole food web in lakes, because more bacteria means more food for the bigger organisms like ducks and fish.”

Alpine Heat

Swiss scientists say the freezing point in the Alps has risen to a record altitude above the summits this summer as Europe bakes in unprecedented heat. Weather balloons had to rise 5,184 metres above sea level to reach freezing, 70 metres higher than the previous record set in 1995.

Glaciologist Matthias Huss says accelerating global heating, especially in July, has caused freshwater glaciers to melt faster than ever. Wild species accustomed to cold climates are migrating higher and are reaching a point where they have nowhere else to go.

A melting glacier has shifted the border between Switzerland and Italy, putting a mountain lodge that was once entirely in Italy now technically two-thirds in Switzerland.

Violent Marauders

Nearly 50 people have been attacked and injured in the western city of Yamaguchi by a gang of Japanese macaques that initially waged assaults on children and adults before going on to target the elderly. Residents have resorted to carrying umbrellas and sharp garden tools to fend off the simians.

Authorities managed to capture and eventually put down one member of the gang that was identified as an attacker. But eyewitnesses say monkeys involved in the assaults are of different sizes, meaning more of the suspects are still at large. Macaques are commonly seen across Japan, sometimes eating crops and invading homes.

Volcanos

Roundup of Global Volcanic Activity – Continuing Activity for the week 20 July – 26 July 2022

Chiles-Cerro Negro – Colombia-Ecuador : Instituto Geofísico de la Escuela Politécnica Nacional (IGEPN) and the Observatorio Vulcanológico y Sismológico de Pasto del Servicio Geológico Colombiano (SGC OVSP) both monitor the Cerro Negro de Mayasquer and Chiles volcanoes, called the Chiles-Cerro Negro volcanic complex (CCNVC), and both issued reports on the seismic swarm that began on 27 May. This seismicity was mainly characterized by VT earthquakes, typically indicating rock fracturing events. The swarm continued during 12-26 July, though the number and size of events were variable. The earthquakes were located along a fracture zone on and as far as 3.5 km S of Chiles volcano, at depths less than 6 km. The number of long-period (LP) and very-long-period (VLP) earthquakes, low-energy events indicating fluid movement, had increased in the previous two weeks; 60 of such events were recorded on 17 July, the highest daily number of events recorded since the beginning of permanent monitoring in November 2013, and 64 were recorded in 20 July. During 12-23 July a total of 43 earthquakes had local magnitudes greater than 2; four of those events, a M 3.3 recorded at 1038 on 16 July, a M 2.8 at 0816 on 22 July, a M 3.5 at 1746 on 22 July, and a M 3 at 2247 on 23 July were all felt in surrounding areas, including in the municipality of Cumbbal, in the department of Nariño. At 0833 on 25 July a M 5.6 was recorded, with a hypocenter located about 10 km S of Tufiño (Carchi province, Ecuador). Building damage was reported in San Gabriel, Tulcán, and El Ángel (Ecuador) and in the Municipalities of Túquerres and Cumbal (Colombia). Data from continuous GPS geodetic bases located in the vicinity of the Chiles volcano showed a trend of inflation at a rate of approximately 28 mm/year that has been recorded since 2016 (the beginning of deformation monitoring) through the end of 2020, when the deformation stabilized. Neither inflation nor deflation was detected during the beginning of 2020 or in 2021. Inflation was again detected in March, at a rate of 32 mm/year. The rate of inflation notably increased during April-July to an average of 106 mm/year, occurring in at least two deformation zones, one S of Chiles and another in the Potrerillos caldera.

Dukono – Halmahera : PVMBG reported that during 19-25 July almost daily white-and-gray ash plumes from Dukono rose as high as 300 m above the summit and drifted N, E, and W.

Great Sitkin – Andreanof Islands (USA) : AVO reported that slow lava effusion at Great Sitkin continued during 19-26 July. Elevated surface temperatures were identified in satellite images during 19-20 July; weather clouds obscured satellite and webcam views during most of the rest of the week. Seismicity was low, and occasional local earthquakes were recorded. Steam emissions were visible in satellite images during 25-26 July.

Ibu – Halmahera : PVMBG reported that the eruption at Ibu continued during 21-25 July. Gray-and-white ash plumes of variable densities generally rose as high as 2 km above the summit and drifted in multiple directions.

Karymsky – Eastern Kamchatka (Russia) : KVERT reported that a thermal anomaly over Karymsky was identified in satellite images during 14-21 July. Ash plumes were identified in satellite images drifting 170 km S and SE on 15 July.

Kilauea – Hawaiian Islands (USA) : HVO stated that by 19 July about 98 million cubic meters of lava had been erupted from a vent in the lower W wall of at Kilauea’s Halema`uma`u Crater since the current eruption began on 29 September 2021, raising the crater floor by 133 m. Lava continued to effuse from the vent during 19-26 July, entering the lava lake and flowing onto the crater floor. The lake level remained at the bounding levees, though lava oozed from the lake margins on most days. The sulfur dioxide emission rate was approximately 1,300 tons/day on 21 July.

Krakatau – Sunda Strait : The Darwin VAAC reported that during 20 and 22-24 July ash plumes from Anak Krakatau rose to 2.6-3 km (9,000-10,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted SW, WSW, and W based on satellite and webcam images as well as weather models.

Lewotolok – Lembata Island : PVMBG reported that the eruption at Lewotolok continued during 20-26 July. Daily white or white-and-gray emissions rose as high as 500 m above the summit and drifted in multiple directions. Photos in some posted reports showed Strombolian activity at the active vent.

Merapi – Central Java : BPPTKG reported that the eruption at Merapi continued during 15-21 July. The heights and morphologies of the SW and central lava domes were unchanged from the previous week, and seismicity remained at high levels. As many as 22 lava avalanches traveled down the Bebeng drainage on the SW flank, reaching a maximum distance of 1.8 km.

Pavlof – Alaska Peninsula, Alaska : AVO reported that a minor eruption at a vent on Pavlof’s upper E flank was ongoing during 19-26 July. Seismic tremor persisted and multiple daily explosions were detected in seismic and infrasound data. Elevated surface temperatures were identified almost daily in satellite images; weather clouds sometimes prevented views. Diffuse ash emissions were visible in webcam images during 19-20 July. A low-level ash cloud that rose to 2.6 km (8,600 ft) a.s.l. was observed by a pilot at around 1150 on 22 July and corresponded to a slightly larger explosion detected in infrasound data. Steam emissions were visible in satellite images during 25-26 July.

Reventador – Ecuador : IG characterized the ongoing eruption at Reventador as moderate during 19-26 July. Gas-and-ash plumes, observed with the webcam or reported by the Washington VAAC, rose as high as 1.4 km above the summit and drifted in multiple directions. An active lava flow descending the NE flanks was visible in thermal webcam images during 21-24 July.

Sangay – Ecuador : IG reported a high level of activity at Sangay during 19-26 July. Daily ash-and-gas plumes were identified in IG webcam images and visible in satellite images according to the Washington VAAC. Plumes rose as high as 2 km above the volcano and drifted WNW, W, and S. Incandescent material was seen descending the SE flank during 21-22 July.

Semeru – Eastern Java : PVMBG reported that the eruption at Semeru continued during 19-26 July. At 1455 on 24 July an ash plume rose 300 m above the summit and drifted SW.

Australia Classifies Koala as Endangered after Bushfires

Koalas – or ‘Phascolarctos cinereus’ – are a downward marsupial settlement that sleeps most of the day perched in trees and feeding exclusively on eucalyptus leaves. This is possible because the digestive system is able to neutralize toxic chemicals in plants. According to the Australian Koala Foundation, there are no more than 100,000 koalas left in the wild, “but probably no more than 43,000 koalas,” the foundation said.

The koala population in tropical Queensland has declined by at least 50 percent since 2001 and that NSW koalas are critically endangered. The Australian government had failed to take early action to protect koalas. It is now imperative to secure key koala habitats, reconnect wildlife corridors and reduce major threats to the animals.

Roundup of Global Volcanic Activity – New Activity for the week 20 July – 26 July 2022

Aira – Kyushu (Japan) : A notable eruption at Minamidake Crater (at Aira Caldera’s Sakurajima volcano) occurred on 24 July. The event was preceded by inflation first detected at around 0900 on 18 July. JMA warned residents that the inflation represented an intrusion of magma that could result in a large explosion. Sulfur dioxide emissions were at 1,900 tons per day, measured during a field visit on 22 July. Four eruptive events recorded between 23 July and 1500 on 24 July produced plumes that rose 1.2 km above the crater rim; the events did not change the rate of inflation. A larger eruptive event occurred at 2005 on 24 July that ejected bombs more than 2.4 km E, the first time material fell beyond 2 km from the crater since 4 June 2020. The event produced minor plumes that rose 300 m before mingling with weather clouds. The Alert Level was raised to 5 (the highest level on a 5-level scale) at 2050, signaling that residents should evacuate. According to a news article 51 people in 33 households living within a 3-km radius of both Minamidake and Showa craters left their homes. Ashfall was reported in Kagoshima City (about 10 km W). JMA noted that inflation ceased after the event. On 25 July JMA scientists conducted a field visit and confirmed that bombs were deposited more than 2.4 km from the vent and observed ashfall in an area from Shirahamacho to Kurokamicho. During 25-26 July a few small explosions and eruptive events generated plumes that rose as high as 2.2 km above the crater rim and disappeared into the weather clouds. Deformation had stagnated.

Ebeko – Paramushir Island (Russia) : KVERT reported that moderate activity at Ebeko was ongoing during 14-21 July. According to volcanologists in Severo-Kurilsk (Paramushir Island, about 7 km E) explosions generated ash plumes that rose up to 3.5 km (11,500 ft) a.s.l. and drifted E and S. A thermal anomaly over the volcano was identified in satellite images during 17-18 July.

Wildlife

Cheetahs Return to India

Cheetahs will soon roam the forests of central India for the first time in 70 years. The country's indigenous cats were declared extinct in 1952 after decades of hunting, habitat loss and food shortages led to their disappearance.

But a long-anticipated agreement with Namibia will see the world's fastest land animals transported from Africa to "cheetah- friendly" areas of Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh state. Asiatic cheetahs once roamed from Afghanistan to the Arabian Peninsula, but only about a dozen still survive in Iran.

Winged Tragedy

The worldwide bird flu epidemic that has resulted in the deaths of untold millions of poultry in recent months is also decimating the planet’s wild bird populations. The Guardian reports the UK has suffered its worst-ever infections, with more than 300 outbreaks in the nation’s seabird colonies.

Birds are also dying in many other areas of the world. More than 2,000 of the world’s approximately 8,000 Dalmatian pelicans have already perished. “We are facing an event of mass extinction of animals. Entire populations are affected by this virus,” says Uri Naveh, a senior scientist at the Israel Parks and Nature Authority. The international poultry trade, farming and sale of birds, as well as wild migrations, are the leading causes.

Antarctic in Pink

Antarctic researchers captured sublime images of pink skies over the frozen landscape brought on by Tonga’s record volcanic eruption in mid-January.

The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano spewed an enormous number of fine particles high into the stratosphere, resulting in vivid sunsets in parts of Australia and New Zealand.

The effect in the near-perpetual winter twilight of Antarctica’s Scott Base and McMurdo Station has created a fiery hue over the ice, even at noon.

Volcanos

Roundup of Global Volcanic Activity – Ongoing Activity for the week 13 July – 19 July 2022

Aira – Kyushu (Japan) : JMA reported that nighttime incandescence at Minamidake Crater (at Aira Caldera’s Sakurajima volcano) was visible during 11-18 July. Sulfur dioxide emissions were measured at 1,400 tons per day on 13 July. One explosion, recorded at 1852 on 17 July, produced an ash plume that rose as high as 2.8 km above the crater rim and ejected material as high as 1.1 km above the summit.

Great Sitkin – Andreanof Islands (USA) : AVO reported that slow lava effusion at Great Sitkin continued during 12-19 July. Elevated surface temperatures were identified in satellite images on most days; weather clouds sometimes obscured satellite and webcam views. Seismicity was low, and occasional local earthquakes were recorded.

Kama’ehuakanaloa – Hawaiian Islands (USA) : An earthquake swarm began at Kama’ehuakanaloa at about 0200 on 16 July and was characterized by seismic tremor accompanied by pulses of seismic energy every 15-20 seconds. The pattern of elevated seismicity continued through at least 1453 on 17 July, the posting time of the HVO’s information statement. The report also noted that around 24 earthquakes in the M 1.8-3 range were recorded during 0130-0600 on 17 July. The Scientist-in-Charge stated that the seismicity was likely the result of magma movement beneath the seamount, but there were no show signs of an imminent eruption. The most recent swarm was recorded on 11 May 2020 and consisted of 18 events in the M 3-3.9 range.

Karymsky – Eastern Kamchatka (Russia) : KVERT reported that a thermal anomaly over Karymsky was identified in satellite images during 7-14 July. At 2250 local time on 13 July ash plumes were identified in satellite images rising 10-11 km (32,800-36,100 ft) a.s.l. and drifting 360 km SW.

Kilauea – Hawaiian Islands (USA) : HVO reported that lava continued to effuse from a vent in the lower W wall of Kilauea’s Halema`uma`u Crater during 12-19 July, entering the lava lake and flowing onto the crater floor. The lake level was relatively low, though by 16 July it had risen to the bounding levees along the margins. Incandescence from the W vent complex was visible during 16-19 July. Lava oozed from the lake margins during the early morning of 19 July.

Krakatau – Sunda Strait : PVMBG reported that several eruptive events were recorded at Anak Krakatau during 16-18 July. Eruptions at 2253 and 2339 on 16 July, 0847 on 17 July, and 0826, 1549, and 1730 on 18 July produced dense gray-to-black ash plumes that rose 1-2.5 km above the summit and drifted NE, S, SW, and W. Webcam image acquired at 2308 and 2344 on 16 July showed incandescence at the vent.

Lewotolok – Lembata Island : PVMBG reported that the eruption at Lewotolok continued during 12-19 July. Daily white or white-and-gray emissions rose as high as 800 m above the summit and drifted in multiple directions. Photos in some posted reports showed Strombolian activity from the crater.

Manam – Northeast of New Guinea : The Darwin VAAC reported that on 14 July ash plumes from Manam rose to 2.1 km (7,000 ft) and drifted NW based on satellite and RVO webcam images.

Merapi – Central Java : BPPTKG reported that the eruption at Merapi continued during 8-14 July. The heights and morphologies of the SW and central lava domes were unchanged from the previous week, and seismicity remained at high levels. As many as 43 lava avalanches traveled down the Bebeng drainage on the SW flank, reaching a maximum distance of 2 km.

Pavlof – Alaska Peninsula, Alaska : AVO reported that a minor eruption at a vent on Pavlof’s upper E flank was ongoing during 12-19 July. Seismic tremor persisted and multiple daily explosions were detected in seismic and infrasound data. Elevated surface temperatures identified in satellite images on a few of the days possibly reflected ongoing minor lava effusion; cloud cover prevented views on most of the days during the week. Minor ash emissions were seen in webcam images during 18019 July.

Popocatepetl – Mexico : CENAPRED reported that each day during 12-18 July there were 8-39 steam-and-gas emissions rising from Popocatépetl that drifted SW and WNW.

Sao Jorge – Azores : A seismic swarm at São Jorge began at 1605 on 19 March along a WNW-ESE fissure system stretching from Ponta dos Rosais to Norte Pequeno – Silveira. The seismic data as well as deformation data indicated a magmatic intrusion, though by early April no significant deformation was detected. The frequency of earthquakes had decreased in late May-early June. Seismicity continued to be elevated; by 18 July a total of 43,410 low-magnitude tectonic events had been recorded.

Semeru – Eastern Java : PVMBG reported that the eruption at Semeru continued during 12-18 July. At 0614 on 14 July an ash plume rose 500 m above the summit and drifted SW.

Sheveluch – Central Kamchatka (Russia) : KVERT reported that the ongoing eruption at Sheveluch was characterized by explosions, hot avalanches, and lava-dome extrusion. A thermal anomaly was identified in satellite images during 7-14 July. Satellite images showed ash plumes drifting 82 km SW and SE during 11-13 July.

Suwanosejima – Ryukyu Islands (Japan) : JMA reported that the eruption at Suwanosejima’s Ontake Crater continued during 11-18 July. There were 13 explosions, producing eruption plumes that rose as high as 1.5 km above the crater rim and ejecting material 700 m from the vent. Crater incandescence was observed nightly.

‘Shocking’ report lists devastation to Australia wildlife

Australia’s unique wildlife is being devastated by bushfires, drought, habitat loss and global warming, a government report said Tuesday, warning that more species were headed for extinction.

The five-yearly State of the Environment report prompted calls for dramatic action to reverse the “poor and deteriorating” state of flora and fauna depicted by scientists on land and at sea.

The damage is being hastened by a climate that has warmed Australia’s average land temperature by 1.4 degrees Celsius since the early 20th century, the report said.

Australia’s 2019-2020 “Black Summer” bushfires burned more than eight million hectares of native vegetation and killed or displaced 1-3 billion animals, the report found.

Marine heatwaves caused mass coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef in 2016, 2017 and 2020, it said. Since then, a government report in March found the reef had again suffered mass bleaching.

Millions of hectares of primary forest had been cleared since 1990, the report said.

More than seven million hectares of habitat for threatened species were cleared between 2000 and 2017 without being assessed under Australia’s environmental conservation laws, it found.

In five years, more than 200 plant and animal species of national significance had been added to the list of threatened species under Australia’s environmental laws.

As Globe Warms, Infected Pines Starve And Disease-Causing Fungi Thrive

The high heat and low water conditions produced by global warming weaken pine trees’ resistance to disease by hindering their ability to mount an effective defense at the same time that pathogenic fungi in their tissues become more aggressive, new research suggests. The findings help explain the mechanisms behind what has become a well-known fact: The warming world makes trees more susceptible to disease.

The study showed that within three days of infection under climate-change conditions, the tree was pulled in two different directions: It was deprived of carbon by both reduced photosynthesis and enhanced acquisition of the carbon by the fungi. When we talk about carbon, we mean the sugars, food and reserves for all other metabolic processes in the trees, including growth and defence.

Wildfires – Europe, Morocco

Thousands of people in Portugal, Spain, France and Morocco have been evacuated from their homes as firefighters tackle wildfires caused by this week’s heatwave, which has brought extreme temperatures of more than 45C (113F) to parts of Europe and north Africa.

One person has died and at least 135 people have suffered mainly minor injuries since wildfires began in Portugal last week. About 800 people have been evacuated from their homes. By Thursday, Portugal had registered 28 active fires, with more than 2,000 firefighters on the ground.

Hundreds more people were evacuated from their homes in south-west France as wildfires raged out of control on Friday. Since Tuesday, more than 1,000 firefighters, supported by nine water-bomber aircraft, have been battling two blazes fanned by scorching heat, tinder-box conditions and strong winds. Authorities in the Gironde department, where the fires are still raging, described the situation as “adverse”. One of the two Gironde fires was around the town of Landiras, south of Bordeaux, where 4,200 hectares have been burned, roads have been closed, and almost 1,000 residents have been evacuated. The other blaze, that has already burnt 3,100 hectares, was along the Atlantic Coast close to the “Dune du Pilat” – the tallest sand dune in Europe – in the Arcachon Bay area.

Temperature records have been equalled or broken across many parts of Spain, with the mercury hitting 44.1C in the north-western city of Ourense for the first time on Thursday. Temperatures in parts of Extremadura, where firefighters are battling a wildfire that has consumed more than 4,000 hectares of land, reached 45C on Thursday.

Moroccan firefighters, soldiers, police officers and civil defence workers have been battling at least four fires that are ripping through forests in the north of the country. At least 1,000 hectares of forest have been burned since Wednesday night in Larache and Ouezzane, according to initial reports. The country, which is struggling under intense droughts, has in recent days been hit by soaring temperatures approaching 45C.

Italy and Croatia have also reported forest fires this week, and eight people had to jump into the sea at Bibione on the Adriatic coast to escape the fire and smoke.

Strong winds have greatly increased the risk of wildfires in five regions in Greece, civil protection officials have warned. Central Greece, Attica and Crete are among the areas most at risk and the fire brigade said they had counted 51 forest fires in the past 24 hours.

Human Exploitation Unsustainable

A new report highlights how unsustainable logging, hunting and fishing are driving extinctions, putting food security at risk in the future. Established in 2012, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) points out that 1 in 5 humans relies on 50,000 species of wild animals, fungi and plants for food, and all are being overexploited by the planet’s growing population.

The IPBES assessment also says about a third of ocean fish are being overfished, more than 10% of trees are threatened by unsustainable logging and more than 1,300 mammals are being pushed to extinction by unbridled hunting. It says “transformative changes” are needed to halt the overexploitation.

Record Tree Loss

More trees were lost to deforestation in Brazil’s Amazon region during the first half of this year than during the same period in any other year. The loss amounted to a 10.6% increase from January to June of last year.

The country’s national space research agency says 1,540 square miles of Amazon rainforest were lost to logging and land clearing for agriculture or livestock. Brazil also recorded the highest number of Amazon wildfires in 15 years. Trees are typically felled by loggers for valuable wood. Ranchers and land speculators then come in to clear the land for agriculture. Such tree losses release clouds of carbon into the atmosphere, worsening the climate crisis.

Squirrel Birth Control

Scientists say they have developed contraceptives to control Britain’s invasive gray squirrels, which are driving the native and beloved red squirrels to extinction. The birth control could help eradicate the gray squirrels without killing them.

The massive scheme will lure gray squirrels into feeding boxes that only they can fit into. There, they will find a mixture of hazelnut spread, irresistible to them, spiked with the contraceptives. The grays first arrived from North America in the late 19th century and have since also damaged Britain’s woodlands by stripping bark from trees for nutrition.

Roundup of Global Volcanic Activity – Ongoing Activity for the week 6 June – 12 July 2022

Bezymianny – Central Kamchatka (Russia) : KVERT reported that a thermal anomaly over Bezymianny was identified in satellite images during 1-7 July.

Great Sitkin – Andreanof Islands (USA) : AVO reported that the eruption at Great Sitkin continued during 6-12 July. Elevated surface temperatures were occasionally identified in satellite images; weather clouds sometimes obscured satellite and webcam views. Seismicity was low, and occasional local earthquakes were recorded. Sulfur dioxide emissions were possibly detected during 9-10 July.

Karymsky – Eastern Kamchatka (Russia) : KVERT reported that a thermal anomaly over Karymsky was identified in satellite images during 30 June and 3 and 7 July.

Kilauea – Hawaiian Islands (USA) : HVO reported that lava continued to effuse from a vent in the lower W wall of Kilauea’s Halema`uma`u Crater during 6-12 July, entering the lava lake and flowing onto the crater floor. The lake level was variable, and occasional lava breakouts occurred along the margins. Low-level spattering from the W vent was visible on most days, with material ejected no more than 10 m above the vent.

Lewotolok – Lembata Island : PVMBG reported that the eruption at Lewotolok continued during 6-12 July. Daily white-and-gray or white, gray, and black emissions rose as high as 700 m above the summit and drifted in multiple directions. Photos in posted reports showed Strombolian activity from the crater.

Merapi – Central Java : BPPTKG reported that the eruption at Merapi continued during 1-7 July. The heights and morphologies of the SW and central lava domes were unchanged from the previous week, and seismicity remained at high levels. As many as 60 lava avalanches traveled down the Bebeng drainage on the SW flank, reaching a maximum distance of 2 km.

Nyamulagira – DR Congo : Thermal anomalies from lava effusion on Nyamulagira’s crater floor were identified in satellite images on 6 and 11 July.

Nyiragongo – DR Congo : Thermal anomalies from lava effusion on Nyiragongo’s crater floor were identified in satellite images on 1, 6, and 11 July.

Pavlof – Alaska Peninsula, Alaska : AVO reported that the eruption at a vent on Pavlof’s upper E flank was ongoing during 5-12 July, and seismic tremor persisted. Daily elevated surface temperatures identified in satellite images were consistent with the continuing effusion of short lava flows; the lava flow was 380 m long by 27 June. Three small explosions were detected during 0315-0317 on 7 July in seismic and infrasound data. Multiple small explosions were recorded during 10-12 July.

Sabancaya – Peru : Instituto Geofísico del Perú (IGP) reported moderate levels of activity at Sabancaya during 4-10 July with a daily average of 20 explosions. Gas-and-ash plumes rose as high as 2.2 km above the summit and drifted E, SE, and S. As many as six thermal anomalies originating from the lava dome in the summit crater were identified in satellite data. Minor inflation continued to be detected near Hualca Hualca (4 km N).

Semeru – Eastern Java : PVMBG reported that the eruption at Semeru continued during 6-12 July. At 0616 on 10 July an ash plume rose 400 m above the summit and drifted SW.

Semisopochnoi – Aleutian Islands (USA) : AVO reported ongoing low-level seismicity, steam emissions, and sulfur dioxide emissions at Semisopochnoi, though no explosive activity had been detected since 12 June.

Sheveluch – Central Kamchatka (Russia) : KVERT reported that a thermal anomaly over Sheveluch was identified in satellite images during 1-7 July and the eruption was characterized by ongoing explosions, hot avalanches, and lava-dome extrusion. At 1130 local time on 12 July video and satellite images showed an ash plume drifting 12 km S at altitudes of 4-4.5 km (13,100-14,800 ft) a.s.l.

Stromboli – Aeolian Islands (Italy) : INGV reported that during 4-10 July activity at Stromboli was characterized by ongoing explosions from four vents in Area N (North Crater area) and two vents in Area C-S (South-Central Crater area). Infrequent explosions from the N1 vent (Area N) ejected mostly ash, with some course material. The N2 vent (Area N) mostly emitted gases along with occasional explosions and sustained jetting. Material ejected from Area N rose no higher than about 60 m above the vents. No explosions occurred at the S1 and C vents in Area C-S; explosions that were medium-to-low intensity and frequency at the two S2 vents ejected material no higher than about 30 m.

Suwanosejima – Ryukyu Islands (Japan) : JMA lowered the Alert Level for Suwanosejima to 2 (on a 5-level scale) on 11 July, reflecting declining activity and a reduced likelihood that tephra would be ejected farther than 1 km. The number and intensity of explosions had been variable since early April but decreased overall, and material had not been ejected beyond a 1-km radius. Eruption plume heights had occasionally exceeded 3 km above the crater rim since July 2021 but none that high had been observed since mid-April. The number of volcanic earthquakes had temporality increased on 17 May but were generally low.

Taal – Luzon (Philippines) : PHIVOLCS lowered the Alert Level for Taal to 1 (on a scale of 0-5) on 11 July, noting that during the previous two months activity was characterized by baseline levels of volcanic earthquakes, weak gas emissions, and minor surface activity. Phreatomagmatic bursts from Main Crater were last observed on 2 and 10 February and 26 March. An average of seven daily volcanic earthquakes were recorded during 1 January-31 May, and none were detected after 13 June. Deformation data since January 2020 showed overall deflation. Sulfur dioxide emissions averaged 1,214 tonnes per day during May-July, though the most recent measurement was 237 tonnes per day. Minor emissions from fumarolic vents in Main Crater continued to produce diffuse steam-rich plumes that rose as high as 2.4 km.

Yakedake – Honshu (Japan) : JMA reported that after an increase in the number of small volcanic earthquakes with epicenters near Yakedake’s summit in late May, seismicity remained elevated for a few weeks. Seismicity decreased in mid-June and returned to baseline levels.

How many people can Earth support?

There are nearly 8 billion people(opens in new tab) living on Earth today, but our planet wasn’t always so crowded. Around 300,000 years ago, when Homo sapiens likely first appeared, our total population was small, between 100 and 10,000 people. There were so few people at the start, that it took approximately 35,000 years for the human population to double in size. From 1930 to 1974, the Earth’s population doubled again, in just 44 years.

Right now the scientific consensus is that the population of the world will reach a peak some time later this century. The world population is projected to reach 10.4 billion people sometime in the 2080s and remain there until 2100, according to the United Nations Population Division. However, the further that demographers look into the future, the more speculative and uncertain their predictions become.
