Virginia, USA – Officials in Virginia, USA report over 40 people unaccounted for after flash floods swept through parts of Buchanan County on 13 July 2022. Raging flash floods ripped through a valley in the rural county of Buchanan. Over 100 homes are thought to have been damaged, with some of them ripped from their foundations. Local observers said flood water was up to 11 feet (3.4 metres) deep. All roads were closed in the area. Meanwhile flash floods swept through a campground near Gatlinburg, Tennessee, USA, overnight 12 to 13 July 2022. Gatlinburg is about 220 km / 140 miles south west of Buchanan County, Virginia. Local media reported 14 people were trapped and later rescued from the Greenbrier Campground. Flash floods also swept away vehicles in the Pittman Center area of Sevier County.
Afghanistan – Further flooding in Afghanistan has affected parts of the east, south, south-east, and central regions of the country and caused more fatalities. 39 people have now lost their lives in flooding in the country since 05 July. Nineteen people died in flooding in the country in late June. The heavy rains have damaged or destroyed around 2,900 houses and disrupted livelihoods. Critical infrastructure such as roads and bridges have also been impacted.
Philippines – Floods and landslides have affected wide areas of the Philippines since heavy rain began on 05 July 2022. Authorities reported one person died and homes and buildings were destroyed after heavy rain caused a landslide in Abucay, Bataan Province on 09 July 2022.
China – Local emergency services in Heilongjiang Province in northeast China report at least 1 person has died and 8 are missing after torrential rain caused severe flash flooding. Heavy rain struck late on 12 July 2022, causing flash floods in a village near Chaoyangshan, Wudalianchi City. Homes and buildings were damaged and several people reported missing. Areas of the province have experienced heavy rainfall for some time, causing levels of the upper reaches of the Heilongjiang River to reach above the danger mark. Levels are expected to rise further and regional authorities said the Mohe to Heihe section of the river will have a flood peak from 11 July to around 18 July where it could exceed the warning level by over 1.10 metres. The Heilongjiang River is also known as the Amur River and forms the border between the Russian Far East and Northeastern China.
Indonesia – Days of heavy rainfall in eastern Indonesia caused flooding and landslides in parts of the Maluku Islands over the last few days, causing 7 fatalities. Floods and landslides struck in West Seram Regency, Maluku Province, Indonesia from 05 July 2022. There were 6 fatalities after heavy rain caused a river to overflow which in turn triggered a landslide in Iha Village. Around the same time floods and landslides struck in Ambon City, capital and largest city of the province of Maluku with a population of around 333,000. Around 36 homes and buildings were damaged affecting 180 residents. Further heavy rain caused flooding and landslides in the city on 08 July. Flood waters were up to 80 cm deep in some areas. In a 24 hour period to 09 July 2022, Ambon City recorded 245 mm of rain and Amahai in Central Maluku Regency, recorded 173 mm.
