Record Antarctica ice contradicts global warming trend. As climatologists worry about the effects of global warming, Antarctica has quietly set a new record for the greatest sea ice extent ever measured at either pole.

Climate scientists have recently been alarmed by declining Arctic ice. But the Arctic Icecap is only 1 to 2 percent of Earth’s ice, while the Antarctic Icecap, contains about 90 percent of the Earth’s ice.

  1. Isn't it, at the very least, hasty to say that the relatively small amount of new ice in Antarctica "contradicts" anything? There are several locales that have recently had record snowfall. Local and regional weather patterns are changing - but from that we cannot conclude that the globe is cooling. Right?

  2. Proponants of Global Warming have in recent weeks made a very big deal about the record Arctic ice melt [it is a big deal]. I believe you are quite correct that global weather patterns are changing. The increase in Antarctic ice does seem to indicate that the trend towards warmer temperatures is not as cut and dried as some people would like to think. The planet represents a vast biomass with huge inertia which will tend to resist the effects of man-made attacks on the environment. I was not suggesting that the planet is cooling, merely trying to show a balanced view that there may be - a little - hope for us yet.
