Human infection with avian influenza A(H7N9) virus – China
On 4 August 2017, the National Health and Family Planning Commission of China (NHFPC) notified WHO of one additional laboratory-confirmed case of human infection with avian influenza A(H7N9) virus in China.
Bird Flu Spreads in Western Cape, South Africa
The Western Cape Agriculture Department says that fresh outbreaks of bird flu in the province are likely. A duck farm in the Joostenbergvlakte is the latest casualty. Tens of thousands of the animals died or had to culled recently, while 96 workers have lost their jobs.
Last week thousands of chickens were also killed due to bird flu which hit a commercial poultry farm in the Paardeberg region. Meanwhile, three ostrich farms in Heidelberg remain under quarantine after the deadly flu strain first emerged there.
