Polio update: Nigeria, Niger and Papua New Guinea
In Nigeria, three new cases of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) cases were reported this week, bringing the total number of cVDPV2 cases in 2018 to eleven.
In neighboring Niger, two cases of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) are reported from Niger, genetically linked to a cVDPV2 in Jigawa, Nigeria.
On the Horn of Africa, three new cases of cVDPV3 were reported in the past week, as well as one cVDPV3 positive environmental sample, from Lower Juba, Middle Shabelle and Banadir, Somalia.
In Papua New Guinea, two new cases of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 1 (cVDPV1) were reported in the past week, bringing the total number of cases in 2018 to 14.
STD’s on the Rise in San Diego, USA
Cases of three sexually transmitted diseases (STD), chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis, continue to rise in San Diego County, according to health officials.
Cases of infectious syphilis increased by 15.2 percent, from 981 cases in 2016 to 1,130 cases in 2017. Last year, the overall rate of early syphilis was 34.1 cases per 100,000 persons, a 14.4 percent increase from 2016. Chlamydia cases also increased by 10 percent—from 18,904 cases in 2016 to 20,801 cases in 2017. Cases of gonorrhea increased by 19.1 percent, from 4,992 cases in 2016 to 5,947 cases in 2017.
Foot and Mouth Disease - Beitbridge, Zimbabwe
The Veterinary Department last week announced a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in Beitbridge at a hastily convened meeting in the district which came after officials, with police assistance, put down 18 heifers allegedly for unauthorised relocation from a red to a green zone.
