Wildfires

Wildfires - Australia

The Western Australian town of Northcliffe is now indefensible and authorities are urging people to leave immediately as a wind change forces an out of control bushfire towards the town.

The fire, started by lightning on Friday in the Shannon National Park, is burning out of control and threatening properties in subdivisions on the outskirts of the town of about 280 people, in the state's south.

A watch and act has also been issued for a blaze at Lower Hotham, near Boddington, that has been burning since Saturday. About 2,000 hectares have been burnt and 70 firefighters are at the scene, along with helitankers. The fire, also sparked by lightning, is moving fast in a southerly direction and has broken containment lines.
