Australia has Moving Day
Beginning at the stroke of midnight GMT, January 1, 2017, every place in Australia will be someplace else.
The vast continent drifts about 2.75 inches to the north-northeast each year because of the movement of Earth’s tectonic plates.
This has caused the country to become offset from the rest of the world by about 5 feet, or the height of the average kangaroo, since the country’s latitude-longitude coordinate system was last updated in 1994.
The increased popularity and reliance on precise GPS tracking on smartphones and other devices have made it necessary to replot every location in the country by about 6 feet to reflect Australia’s actual position in the world.
