Volcanos

Roundup of Global Volcanic Activity

Bardarbunga (Central Iceland): Moderate seismic unrest continues at the volcano. A swarm of earthquakes occurred yesterday afternoon under the northern caldera rim of the volcano. The quakes were located in depths between 1 and 20 km, with the strongest being a magnitude 4 event at 16:15 local time. Such events possibly reflect a magma intrusion from deeper into shallower depth beneath the volcano.

Brava (Cape Verde): Out of fear of a possible new eruption, authorities evacuated 300 people from Cova Da Joana town on Brava island. According to news reports, the National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics recorded increased seismic activity including volcanic tremor that sparked fears an eruption could be imminent. Brava with a diameter of approx. 10 km is the smallest of the 9 inhabited islands of Cape Verde and has a total of approx. 7000 inhabitants. Its volcano with the same name is geologically young and considered active, although no historical eruptions are known (which is mostly due to limited history of written records).
