Colombia reports a number of anthrax livestock deaths. The anthrax outbreak has apparently been active for almost a year. Skin lesions have been found in some people who have come into contact with infected animals.

Tornado spawned from the remnants of Hurricane Beryl spins through Peletier, North Carolina, USA, destroying at least 3 homes and damaging 30 others.

Climate Change

Dozens of streams and springs dry up in the Kullu region in northern India. The flow of major rivers has also dropped dramatically, placing pressure on available drinking water resources. Insufficient and declining snowfalls are being blamed for this phenomenon.

Disease

Anthrax outbreak in Ghana. Two people have died after eating the infected meat of a cow. The government vaccination program has been halted causing concern for the health of both cattle and humans.

3 tornadoes have been sighted in north-east Nebraska, USA. No reports of damage have been received.

Wildfires

Large wildfires in Michigan and New Mexido, USA continue to burn. The Michigan fire has burned more than 30 square miles and destroyed more than 100 buildings, 34 of them homes.

The New Mexico fire has now burned more than 190 square miles (122 000 acres). Firefighters continue to battle both blazes.

Floods

A state of emergency has been declared in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada after more than 100 mm of rain fell over the weekend causing extensive flooding.

Environment

New research suggests that the extensive use of groundwater to satisfy Man's thirst for fresh water may be significantly contributing to the rise of sea levels.

Sea levels have risen by 0.07 inches a year from 1961 - 2003 according to tide gauges.

Most of the unimaginable amount of water pumped out of underground aquifers, rivers and lakes for human consumption eventually finds it way to the sea.

It is estimated that 42% of the rise in ocean levels can be attributed to human water use.

Global Warming

Sea turtles face a barrage of troubles. On beaches, poachers steal their eggs and babies for stewing; at sea, adults get caught up in fishermen’s long lines and nets.

A recent study of leatherback turtles has shown that the temperature of beaches is slowly rising. Hot sand results in predominantly female hatchlings, which skews the population mix, while too hot sand drastically reduces the number of successful hatchlings.

Global Warming

Scientists have identified at least 150 000 sites in the Arctic (Alaska and Greenland) where methane gas is actively bubbling to the surface, mainly along the edges of lakes where the ice margins are retreating due to the melting ice. The Arctic is the fastest warming region on the planet, and the release of this gas which has been trapped for millennia beneath the ice, together with the methane being released across Siberia due to the melting of the permafrost layer may significantly affect the rate of global warming.

Disease

Gold mining in northern Nigeria has contaminated the environment with lead. An outbreak of lead poisoning in 2010 claimed at least 160 children with many others going blind or deaf. Authorities have closed their eyes to the problem and the lead poisoning continues to seriously affect the residents in the area with more than 4 000 children sickened.

Fruit Production Devastated

The fruit industry in Ontario, Canada has been devastated by extreme weather. The apple and soft fruit crops have been severely hit by unseasonal cold snaps, a warm winter and an early blooming period. Crop losses are estimated to be between 30% in the case of soft fruit and 80% in the case of the apple crop. Farmers will require state assistance to be able to weather the disaster.

Warm USA

According to a report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 2012 has been the warmest and most extreme weather period on record in the US.

Fireball Fragments

The fireball and sonic boom which were seen and heard from western Navada to the Sacramento Valley on 22 April 2012, were caused by a minivan-sized meteorite. Numerous fragments have been found composed of the very rare substance carbonaceous chondrite which is older than the sun. Only about 1 percent of meteorites are composed of this substance, which can fetch as much as $ 1 000 a gram on the open market.

Flood and Drought in Brazil

The Brazilian Amazon region is under a state of emergency for one of the worst floods ever; while the north-eastern region of the country is suffering the worst drought in 30 years.

It has been suggested that the systematic de-forestation of large areas of the catchment basin of the Amazon is partly responsible for the severity of the floods.

Tornado

A tornado has hit Grand Isle, New Orleans, USA causing minor damage to homes and knocking out power. No injuries reported.

The drought on Maui, Hawaii is reaching serious proportions for farmers, many of whom may need state assistance to survive.

New Antarctic Ice Shelf Under Threat

Researchers have found that the 450 000 sq km Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf fringing the Weddell Sea on the eastern side of Antarctica, which previously had seemed to be unaffected by global warming, is being affected by rising warming water from below.

This process is slow, but predictions are that the ice shelf may disappear by the end of the century and could add up to 4.4 mm per year in rising sea levels.

Pacific Garbage Patch

Researchers at the University of California San Diego report an dramatic increase in the plastic component of the great Pacific garbage patch which is an area about the size of Texas, USA, comprising all manner of mulched garbage, debris and plastic.

A small insect, the sea strider normally lays its eggs on floating marine debris such as seabird feathers, shells and tar lumps close to land. The increase in small pieces of degrading plastic has provided the sea strider with a new breeding ground on the open ocean. Since the insects' diet includes tiny animals like zooplankton and fish eggs, they could cause a disruption of the oceanic food web over time.

Sunspots

An enormous sunspot group has formed on the surface of the sun measuring more than 100 000 kilometers across, prompting warnings of solar flares heading towards Earth. The solar storm is expected to reach the Earth from 9 May, and will generate spectacular northern lights for skywatchers at northern latitudes.

Russian Airliner Disappears

A Russian passenger airliner with 50 people on board has disappeared in Indonesia. It is believed the aircraft crashed in the mountainous area south of Jakarta during a demonstration flight. A search for the aircraft was called off due to darkness and rainy weather and will begin again at first light.

Marine Wildlife Deaths

More than 500 pelicans and hundreds of dolphins have mysteriously died and washed up along the northern Pacific coast of Peru. Peruvian health officials are investigating and believe the dolphins may have died as a result of a virus. No explanation has been given for the death of the pelicans. It is suggested that a shift in ocean currents may have diverted the rich shoals of anchovy further offshore, leaving the birds without sufficient food supplies.

Global Warming

Climate change is forcing seals to dive deeper to find adequate food supplies. The warmer seas mean that the cooler waters which are home to the traditional fish supplies on which the seal populations feed are found deeper. This means that the seals will have shorter periods to feed and may ultimately see a decline in overall seal numbers.

Scientists report a substantial increase in jellyfish numbers in coastal areas adjacent to human populations. The jellyfish are clogging water intakes at nuclear power stations, fouling fisherman's nets and stinging swimmers.

Two wet seasons in eastern Australia have caused a plague of rabbits to emerge. The wild rodents are decimating the grazing and making survival for indigenous species and livestock farmers even more difficult.

Nuclear Radiation

Northeast Japan around the Earthquake and Tsunami hit Fukushima Nuclear Power Station is expected to remain dangerously radioactive at least until 2022 and possibly 2032. No re-development of the area will be permitted by the authorities.

Radiation from the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station continues to have adverse effects on the environment around it. Radiation is causing the death of female birds unable to withstand the stress of pregnancy. This leaves a sad surplus of lonely male birds singing for mates who are no longer there.

Wildfires on Big Talbot Island and Baldwin Bay, Florida, USA. Both fires are serious, having already burned substantial areas in a very dry State at the moment.

Global Warming

A  recent study suggests that Greenland's glaciers may be melting at a slower rate leading to a slower rise in sea water levels. The study extended over ten years ending in 2011. A caveat is that the full effects of global warming may not have reached Greenland's  northern glaciers yet.
