Wildfires

Wildfires - Greece

A wildfire which broke out on Elafonisos island in southern Greece on Saturday has prompted the evacuation of a hotel and camping as a precautionary measure, with no injuries reported. The blaze is burning mainly low vegetation, as firefighters' efforts to contain it are hampered by strong winds.

The image is similar in Marathon municipality, some 42 kilometers northeast of Athens. According to preliminary information from the Fire Brigade, the flames are scorching a forested zone not very far away from the starting line of the Athens Classic Marathon race.

Wildfires - Australia

Firefighters are in position to protect homes on the NSW mid-north coast after a bushfire quickly burned hundreds of hectares. Strong south-easterly winds fanned the blaze over the Belmore River and Lotus Rd, east of Kempsey, and into the beachside Hat Head National Park. The out-of-control blaze had torched almost 400 hectares by 2.15pm.

A watch and act alert is also out for homes in the vicinity of Turners Flat, west of Kempsey, where a fire has burned through about 200 hectares.
